Someone recently pointed this out to me. They had always believed that Squirtle was derived from combining Squirrel and Turtle. I had always thought it was Squirt and Turtle.

But after looking carefully at Squirtle's tail I can see both sides clearly.

My world has been shaken.

While I see the squirrel point that you're making, I find it ludicrous. Looking at its species, in the Pokedex, or just what other people thought of it, it's a turtle.

Besides, the only thing going for a squirrel is the tail. Everything else does not resemble one at all.

Besides, if you haven't noticed all of the starters' English names have some kind of pun with their species and their type.

Squirt + turtle = Squirtle

Name origin

Squirtle's name is a combination of "turtle", for its turtle-like appearance, and "squirt", which can mean either a verb as in to spray water, or a noun as in a nickname for someone who is tiny in comparison to others. It can also be a corruption of "squirrel", pointing to its squirrel-like tail, but that is unlikely. Zenigame is simply the Japanese word for pond turtle, ??.

He was suggesting a theory besides the obvious, there was no need for a copy pasta of **** we already know about.
