Good question. I'm not entirely sure of the answer, but I've done some research by ripping apart some of my games.

I pryed my (broken) Yellow version apart with a screwdriver once, and noticed that it has a large battery in it. I'm assuming thats where the memory is stored. (I did this years ago)

Earlier this year, I got a screwdriver that allowed me to open my GBA games so I could see what was wrong with my Ruby version. I also did some research about it on the internet, and it appears that it uses Flash memory (not a battery, although the game DID have a large battery similar to Yellow vesrion, but it was probably used for something else.)

So I'm assuming the reason I've been able to keep my save file on Ruby version for 3 years now is because its saved in a chip, not a battery like RBYGSC. The max I've been able to keep data on Silver version is two years, after that, it just corrupts.

Same goes for my Blue version that corrupted the other day. I guess if your game keeps corrupting like all of mine, you probably need to get a new battery.

The game data is indeed saved in the battery.

I'm assuming it goes corrupt because the battery just gets weak over time.

None of my games have ever been corrupted, not crystal, with 355 hours on it, or blue/yellow, which have been played for about 7-8 years repeatedly. The only thing that even came close was one time in crystal, the names of the pokemon in one box turned into ????????????? and everytime I went in to save them, the game shut off automatically, but it was easy enough to fix.

Whatever you do though, don't insert it into a N64Game Pak and play a Stadium game. I did this with my corrupted Red version, and could have destroyed my stadium save file. When I went to Free Battle, my {articuno} became a {jynx}, and it's moveset was something like peck, sleep powder and I forgot the rest.
No wait that was my brother
well it doesn't matter if it was my brother, it was still a bad thing (we share the same stadium file coz I only have 1 N64 Memory Card)
so the moral is don't meddle with corrupted games, as your others could get corrupted in the process.

It's probably either something to do with the battery, or a glitchy virus thing (you know what I mean)
If possible you could try investigating further.

As about 32987 people said before, the internal battery may have died/gone weak. That happened with my Gold version, which I played years ago and about a year ago started a new game and played it almost non-stop, and about three months ago the save file went bye-bye. I go to start a new game on that, and it deletes it when I save it. My friend's Silver version, which she gave to me, is still working great, however... so yeah.

Or you could have simply turned the game off/trick the game into thinking it was off while saving. I accidentally did this on my original Silver and it messed up. Try press B+Select on the Start screen then wiping your data then starting a new file. It might work.

I have played my silver for 5 years, (375 hours). That does contradict the theory, unless every battery is different.

Also, is there any way to transfer data from battery to battery? Like if my Silver battery got low on power, would i be able to clone the battery file to a new battery? I dont want to  lose the file  now, not when I have 244 Pokedex 8)

Omg  I hope my file lasts 7-8 years, though this is Silver, not R/B/Y. I have played longerthan you (in hours, on GSC)

I have played longest out of anyone I have known (in hours, on GSC)

I had Crystal since it came out, I just don't play it a lot :( But hey, I had 244 pokemon on it 8)

But then I got stupid and erased it about a month ago. And I didn't save any of my poke's (goodbye every single legendary except mew). But then I traded the mew from by blue version. And, I have 4 pokemon that I didn't have last time. I will get all pokemon!!!

its either the save battery is dead or you dont take care of your game..........its probably the first one..........

the real reason it wont save is beacause the TIMECARD has run out. That battery is either the time card or it reads the game butim pretty sure that the time card is like a computer chip and there is NO way to fix it.If you really want to play it agian you need to get a new one which is kind of a good thing beacause you can play your new game and have the same pokemon if you can get on your old one because you will still be able to trade even if it dosent save.

That was very long.....

Personally, I've never seen a corrupted Yellow Red or Blue version. I guessed that they used a new type of battery in the metallic versions, but apparently I've just been lucky with the older games

Hmmm, when my Silver battery died there was no message about a corruption, my file was simply gone. Perhaps if we knew a bit more about the cartridge in question.
*Is it used (ex. Purchased from Ebay)?
*Could you have accidentally shut it off at some point during instruction NOT to?
*Have you ever performed any cheat tricks or used a Gameshark on it?
If you have not done the second two actions but the cartridge is used than the previous owner could have.

Or perhaps my experience was simply one of two possibilities and this is the other.
An expert friend of mine did tell me that Gold and Silver batteries had a glitch in them causing them to be weaker. A problem that was fixed in Crystal if memory serves.

Interesting my Silver lasted seven years. Suddenly I must wonder if I would have been able to get a bit longer out of it had I never touched it with a Gameshark. Sadly I gamesharked a lot of pokemon on to it at one point though it never caused any visible problems.
