Post subject:  Re: Official RBY Team Rating Thread

This is my R / B / Y team and I am also following rules and regulations of the championships I have been to in the past before..... meaning NO LEGENDARIES.

Snorlax: Level 100 (used no rare cadies to level)
Amnesia
Rest
Surf
Blizzard
(This was my Special Sweeper, Scout, and Tank... I use to throw it out first because its presence would force people to switch out to something that could beat it.... not too many could and in response I would switch out as well.... the switch out was guaranteed to happen)

Tauros: Level 100 (used no rare candies)
Substitute
Rest
Earthquake
Body Slam
(This was my second Tank and my Physical Sweeper.... he was hard to take down... It made me so happy to waste 100 hours in Safari Zone to catch this guy.... totaly unstoppable powerhouse)

Alakazam: Level 100 (used no rare candies)
Recover
Psychic
Thunder Wave
Substitute
(This was my team disabler.... Thunder Wave was the most counted on Status infliction method back in the day.... This Alakazam was strong enough to take down a Mewtwo on a few occasions)

Hitmonlee: Level 100 (used no rare candies)
Body Slam
Hi Jump Kick
Rest
Double Team
(This was my Tauros and Snorlax counter because the best of the best typically always had them... Snorlax was tough to take down even for a Mewtwo once Snorlax got max Amnesia buff.... he made short work of Snorlax and Tauros)

Lapras: Level 100 (used no rare candies)
Blizzard
Surf
Rest
Thunderbolt
(I can honestly say that my Lapras has come through for me in some tough situations... the variety of Special attacks it could learn back then was amazing)

Tangela: Level 100 (used no rare candies)
Toxic
Bind
Leech Seed
Rest
(If you laugh at this one you wont be the first... but it would surprise you... one of the only 2 grass types that was not easily taken out by Psychic Pokemon because it was not a Poison type.... Exeggutor being the other of course.... It was a nasty surprise to people back in the day... Toxic / Leech Seed / Bind combo was probably the most powerful disable KO in the game.... also the least used. Guaranteed KO in 4 turns. I used it to beat Mewtwo users a bunch of times.... you should have seen the rage XD )

Substitutions: Based on if I knew anything about my opponent ahead of time.

Charizard: Level 100 (used no rare candies)
Dig .....(Could learn as Charmeleon before it evolved)
Fly .....(Learned in Yellow)
Flamethrower
Slash
(This was my official glass cannon... but was hard to hit and its moves were dang near ready for any contingency)

Scyther: Level 100 (used no rare candies)
Double Team
Agility
Rest
Slash
( Crit Machine - Nuff said )

Jolteon: Level 100 (used no rare candies)
Pin Missile
Thunderbolt
Thunder Wave
Double Team
(This one was the only Pokemon I had that literally devastated Psychic types including Mewtwo and did rather well with crits and avoiding being hit)

Blastoise: Level 100 (used no rare candies)
Blizzard
Surf
Substitute
Rest
(This was my third meatiest tank.... could take a few punches easy without complaints)

Gengar: Level 100 (used no rare candies)
Psychic
Thunderbolt
Confuse Ray
Mega Drain
(This was my Anti-Physical Sweeper..... did very well at that.... I had a second one that knew Explosion instead of Mega Drain as an added surprise against people that never saw it comming.)

Chansey: Level 100 (used no rare candies)
Softboiled
Substitute
Rest
Seismic Toss
( My nuisance pokemon.... hard to kill Tank / Support.... would heal my pokemon while they were using Double Team during play.... I dont understand why on the website it says Softboiled came from G / S / C. I never owned G / S / C and my Chansey in Gen 1 knew Softboiled. I used it to defeat the elite 4 the first time and conserve the Max Potions I had.)

So there it is.... My main team and my substitute selection.

Post subject:  Re: Official RBY Team Rating Thread

To ShinyPoke I believe you like to prepare for any situation in your team setup. I see what you are doing with your 2 Mews. You could indefenitelly keep your entire team alive with 2 Softboiled using Pokemon. Great strategy for casual play. I have done it too. For competition rules your team does not qualify based on two factors.

1) You are using legendaries. The first competition I went to for Gen 1 Mew, Mewtwo, Moltres, Zapdos, and Articuno were banned from competative play.

2) After a specific championship in Japan in 1998 the use of multiples of the same Pokemon was banned. The winner used a team of 6 Chanseys and each knew Softboiled, Substitute, Seismic Toss, and an special attack which varied for each one (Ice Beam, Flamethrower, Thunderbolt, Psychic, Mega Drain, and Counter). This was a great strategy because it would allow him to keep his team healed at all times.... Substitutes lasted a long time because of Chansey's high HP, and he could comfortably switch in and out without any worries that his poke would be at a disadvantage.

Now as for Mew knowing Metronome..... I'm sorry to say but this is a heck of a mistake. The one that knows Thunderbolt should learn Mega Drain or Surf in order to sweep through earth and ground types without a problem. The Mew that knows Ice Beam would do well knowing Mega Drain, or Flamethrower. To be honest I would get rid of Metronome and teach both of them Amnesia to make their Psychic hit like a bus filled to the brim with bombs. Metronome is a great theme move that would work well for a Gym Leader that beleived luck is on his side. Technically you could have an entire team of Metronome using Pokemon for such a theme and for fun. This makes the Pokemon unpredictable and a challenge for the challenger and the owner as well because with all the moves available with Metronome what are the chances of hitting the correct one?

To Crouter

When your Rhyhorn evolves into a Rhydon you would be surprised to know what moves it could learn. For Rhydon I would teach him Earthquake, Rock Slide, Thunderbolt, and Ice Beam. Rhydon is a super tough tank that can hold his own against most but not all Physical Sweeper types. He would render a Crit-Slash-Scyther useless. However he is weak against Plant and Water types. Ice Beam and Thunderbolt would make him capable of dealing with those pesky pokemon even though his Special Stat is so-so.

Hypno is a strong Psychic type Pokemon that can take a punch very well. Hypno would do very well with Substitute, Rest, Psychic, Seismic Toss. He would be able to survive through most enemy attacks. Another risky yet proven moveset if used correctly is Substitute, Rest, Toxic, and Double Team. You have no way of dealing large amounts of damage but you can slowly win through the Toxic poisoning effect. I have seen people use this moveset on Hypno and never need to use any of their other 5 pokemon to win. There is one downside. Pokemon that use Rest counter pokemon that rely on Toxic to win.

As far as your Dodrio goes it depends on a lot. I would recapture a new one and teach it Body Slam, Double Team, Rest, and Drill Peck. If you were to want to keep Sky Attack the moveset above would worke well with it... just replace Drill Peck with Sky Attack. Dodrio is fast and if you keep using Double Team and Rest at the beginning you wound be nigh unhittable. It knows Fly which to me is a small problem. Fly can miss... Drill Peck does not.

For Ninetales I applaud you for keeping Confuse Ray on him. Great move. I would teach him Flamethrower / Fireblast, Mimic / Dig, Headbutt. Headbutt has a 30% chance to make the opponent flinch. Dig would allow you too use an ground type mov and escape a possible attack but would make you vulnerable to Earthquake and Swift. Mimic would allows you to steal a move from an enemy and use it against them and of course Flamthrower or Fireblast for the STAB and the chance to burn. I like Flamethrower because it has more PP.

Cloyster is your Tank and I would treat him like one by teaching him Substitute, Rest, Ice Beam / Blizzard, and Surf. Having 2 Ice attacks on him is pointless. For competative play this version of Closter is a tough matchup.

Magneton I would teach Thunder Wave, Thunderbolt, Rest, and Tri Attack or Toxic, Thunderbolt, Double Team, Rest. Unfortunately Magneton does not have an amazing moveset pool.

Good luck I hope this was helpfull.

Well i would get rid of rapidash and pidgeot since you all ready have a charzard who can handle both fire and flying moves, try aerial ace instead of seismic toss. Nidoking is a physical, not special so he needs moves like earthquake and body slam. Ever think of adding an executor (sorry for the spelling) Its a pretty good grass type who gets the benefits of being a psychic to. Kingler and Dragonite seem pretty good. This is all just what i think though.

Umm... dude? Areodactyl can NOT learn Rock Slide. Thought I'd let you know. Replace with Whirlwind/Supersonic, they're the only good moves it can still learn in RBY.

Are you sure you got that right in all 3 versions? Because I vaguely remember MY Areodactyl learning Rock Slide, and some moves don't take on Red and Blue as they do on Yellow. For instance, teaching Dig to my Vulpix/Ninetales in pretty much a given when playing Yellow, but it's not compatible when I try it on Blue. (Or my Crystal for that matter.)

Post subject:  Re: Official RBY Team Rating Thread

I don't think that anyone's team has really been reviewed and rated, actually. But we were commenting on the new person's team because it doesn't quite fit here.

As for your team, I am not an official rater, so I won't do that, but I will make some general observations.

1) Your team does not have much type variance. Two of your Pokemon are Poison-types, and in combination with Primeape means that you are really susceptible to Psychic attacks, which in this generation are kind of awesome... Three Water-types also. Your team seems awfully open to Grass attacks as well.

2) While the above point is true, you have done a very good job with varying your movesets, and without counting, I think you have most types covered. The big trick is finding a move to deal with those annoying Psychics, who will at least incur serious damage on up to four of your Pokemon (maybe on Kabutops, that's the fourth), which I don't see any that strike me as Psychic counters (a Bug-type move would be great).

3) What levels are you talking about for your Pokes? Obviously, that won't change the things that I just said, but it might make a difference to an official rater who goes through and tries to help.

4) As a general rule, your movesets are pretty good. The reason I don't like Haunter's is because it has no STAB at all, which is essential for most effective Pokemon (not that it can't work, because you have him as a Special Sweeper). Muk could probably use a better move than Screech, but I don't know what to suggest, unless it can still learn Minimize (another reason you should post levels). Kabutops has an interesting moveset, but at the moment I would recommend replacing a Normal-type with a Rock-type to give him that STAB as well (too bad Primeape has Rock Slide, because I'm guessing that was TM). Likewise, Kingler could use a much better move than Swords Dance (although it does work well in your current set, I don't particularly like that move). Very interesting set on Primeape, I can't think of any ways to make it much better... Pretty standard Cloyster set, no particular complaints there...unless you want to replace Explosion with Toxic.

Obviously, this is not an official rating, but I hope that this helps you!

Edit: As a response to your reply, don't forget that some TMs are available at Celadon Mart, on the upper floors of the building. That would be a place to get some really good moves, at some cost.

Hey, thanks for the review anyway. To respond to your comments, the reason my choices for this team are relatively bizarre is because I first looked at the original 151 and thought, "Who are my favorites, regardless of typing and actual power?" and this is what I came up with. Selecting a solid team when that's your criteria is hard, believe me. It just gets harder when you do everything in-game and are limited to only one of each TM.

All Pokémon are, in theory, level 100. They will certainly be high enough in level to have learned all of their moves (especially if I think I'm going to have any chance against the Elite 4). As for countering Psychics, is that even possible in RBY? The only move we've got in RBY to combat Psychics is the Bug-type Pin Missle, which is unfortunately only learned by Beedrill (among my favorites, but too crappy to make the cut) and Jolteon (who didn't make the favorites list). I totally would've given Rock Slide to Kabutops, if he were capable of learning it. As for Haunter, there is no STAB for Ghost-types in RBY. Night Shade does set damage and, due to a glitch, Lick doesn't affect Psychic-types. I do like the notion of Minimize on Muk, however.

When I originally posted my team, I already pretty much knew I was set; the Pokémon in question's limited movepools and the lack of TMs severely limited my options. Thanks, though!

Post subject:  Re: Official RBY Team Rating Thread

Hey all! New around these parts. Just re-discovered Pokemon Yellow earlier last week, also found Red version (which I intend to use for the sake of Pokedex completion), been playing it just like I did when I was 13 years old. I'd like some feedback; it's been a long time and I promise you all that I don't know half as much as the rest of you devotees here.

I have my party set up, but I've struggled to find a grass/bug/poison Pokemon I'm truly satisfied with for it. So right now I'm traveling with a party of five, and it goes as follows.

Pikachu Lv. 49 {pikachu}
-Thunder
-Mega Punch
-Flash
-Thunderbolt

Dewgong Lv. 54 {dewgong}
-Blizzard
-Take Down
-Surf
-Ice Beam

Haunter Lv. 53 {haunter}
-Psychic
-Dream Eater
-Night Shade
-Hypnosis

Charizard Lv. 48 {charizard}
-Fire Blast
-Slash
-Fly
-Flamethrower

Nidoking Lv. 49 {nidoking}
-Horn Drill
-Thrash
-Earthquake
-Skull Bash

Just a couple of notes:

I can't stand Pikachu. Seems like he regularly fails me in large battles. Great speed, but other than that he's just mediocre, however essential for the Pokemon Yellow experience. Oh, what I would give for a Raichu right about now.

I still need a grass/bug/poison type and I know Nidoking fits the mold by definition, but I'm using him more as a ground/rock type. I've had him since day one as a Nidoran. Thinking about Venomoth but I don't know if there's something better.

Haunter was my big surprise. Gengar was always my favorite Pokemon in Generation I, so I wanted one simply for novelty. Caught a Gastly in Pokemon Tower and found that Hypnosis was coming in handy to catch Pokemon, and as it grew into Haunter and continued to evolve, it became a cornerstone of my party and I'm very pleased with that. Once I get Red kickstarted I'll turn it into a Gengar.

I was very perplexed as to which water/ice Pokemon I should go with. Whenever I played Yellow I always followed the Ash storyline, but this time wanted to find my own identity with my own party (which is very difficult when you have Pikachu as your starter). My Dewgong has been wonderful. Between all the generations I played, never once had a Dewgong. Love the defensive strength and high HP, and it's definitely a keeper for me.

And Charizard...still on the fence. It hasn't given me a reason to dislike it. Always been a fan of Arcanine, though.

Anywho, as for the rest of my journey...I've captured 90 types in 32 hours of play, still trying to master the Safari Zone because I need Tauros and Scyther, mainly. Caught all the legendaries except for Mew (and I plan on using the glitch for the first time in 13 years of playing these games when I start up Red, very excited).

I'm seriously for the first time trying to "catch 'em all," and if/when I do, I'm going to move it all over to the Gold (my favorite of any Pokemon game). Of course I won't use it to advance farther in that game, I'll play by the rules.

Sorry for indulging so much. I'm new at this :P Thanks for any input you can provide!

Was thinking about using {porygon} {dodrio} {persian} {marowak} or a bug Pokémon but I didn't have room. Would any of those be worth switching in? I kicked out {blastoise} to use {lapras}, was that a good idea?

Have you, maybe, meant Seadra?
If not, your in wrong thread...
And plz add moveset. If not, you can't get advices.
You have 2 fire types and 2 water types, maybe you could find something else, like Dragonite, Tangela, etc.?
