Well, they aren't the best names ever, but they top Lickylicky and Oblivia hands down.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Snivy? What kind of name is that? And Tepig? It's just 'The pig' with no space or h! Oshawott is my least hated, but it still stinks. GameFreak was awesome to make B/W as good as it is, but NoA really hates us. Unova is a cool name, but it's not similar to the word 'Isshu' in any way, which bothers me. The other four regions had similar names in Japanese and English, but the only similarity between Isshu and Unova is the letter 'U', which isn't sufficient for me. And now Reshiram and Zekrom aren't even the Yin and Yang Pokemon anymore. They're just 'Vast White' and 'Deep Black.' They have no meaning now other than to be a strong Pokemon to sweep the champion with. They don't control or represent balance! I want some quality names, now! Sorry for the rant; I was just expecting better from GameFreak. Seriously, I'll learn to live with Tepig and Oshawott, though Oshawott will take longer. I'll just nickname it Wotter. Snivy, however, just earned itself an eternal shun. Shun, Snivy, shun. I feel good to be the first truly negative post on this thread. It gives me a sense of purpose. That, and I feel good this time of year. Friday's my birthday, and I'd really like a present (wink wink nudge nudge). And Lickylicky is worse, but I don't have Oblivia. But I do hate NoA. They are the reason why I hate Snivy (I shall call him Smugleaf for the rest of my existence), the casinos (Voltorb Flip my butt *grumble grumble*), Lickylicky (does not need explanation), etc. I hope NoA is reading this, so they can give better names to Pokemon in the future. Still hoping that one of Smugleaf's evolutions will have a better name, like Repteaf (reptile + leaf; sounds like the word 'teeth' is in it). Also hoping for Porkchop (uh, he's pork that chops) and Narwhotter (narwhal + otter).

I like the starter names a lot. Tepig's my least favorite, but I still think it's alright. Oshawott sounds so cute...
Snivy fits it rather well, I think. I'm looking forward to the rest of the names eventually being revealed.
Edit: I'd also just like to say: For the people who absolutely can't stand these names and feel as if their game experience will be ruined by these names, remember that "nickname" option? Put it to use! :)

I am not a huge fan of the new names, but I don't really hate them. Oshawott is my favorite of the names, it is just a fun name to say. The other two are just meh to me.

Tepig isn't 'The pig' but rather 'Tepid' which means Only slightly warm; lukewarm. {tepig} (These will be coded soon) Snivy is Snake + Ivy {snivy} (These will be coded soon) Oshawotter is Ocean + Otter (Sea otter) {oshawott} (These will be coded soon) turtle + twig = Tree + gecko = Bulb + dinosaur =

Wow, not what I was expecting. I think what I dislike the most though is the name change for the region, I really like Isshu. Tepig seems to just plain lack originality, but the names the legends have are okay and I don't mind the otter name.
The title of this thread totally suits the responses, whine and moan!

Though I'm okay with the region name, it was absolutely completely unnecessary as Isshu is a far better name no matter how you look at it...
As for the starters names;
Oshawott = I didn't exactly like Mijumaru but this is worse imo, oh well whatever...
Tepig = I am outraged at this 1 specifically as it is without a doubt 1 of the worse english names a pokemon has ever been given, ever & not to forget to mention that at least Pokabu was catchy & I actually liked that name but oh well, guess something has to be destroyed, better a name then something of actual value to me...
Snivy = Though I really liked how Tsutaaja rolled off the tongue, I really like Snivy as well, an exceptable name change for me but what of it's evolved forms' english names would be my only question regarding Snivy at this point...
Welp, I look forward to seeing how good or how bad the rest of them will or will not be...meh...

On the first note: I'm back after my little hiatus. Second: Gamefreak you know really fail. Snivy is alright but Tepig and Oshawott wdf. It's a good thing I nickname all of my pokemon. As for the region name Unova sounds like it kinda should have been the name for Sinnoh since it deals with the universe. (U-nova nova=star o.O) Well eh lets hope the other names are better or I'll have my old team throught the game. *Gets dewgong ready*

Guess what guys?
GameFreak has nothing to do with these names. GameFreak is a Japanese video game development company. These names are all English names created by Nintendo of America. The two are not interchangeable.

Sorry Frost but that was a mistake on my part. I always get the two confused. In Fact yesterday my friend and were talking about B&W and I kept calling nintendo gamefreak and I said some pretty mean stuff. I was corrected after.... but again right now. No need to shout though... You hurt my internet feelings. JK

Those are the names.. (*looks back up*)... Really, they couldn't have come up with some better ones for the starters? For me those names kinda take away from the excitment. Honestly, SNIVY?!?!?! Yes, /xVx has alredy ponted out about the other grass starters, but those ones actually sound good. Snivy is just.. well im not sure what to say but it isn't good. Snivys last evo better be called Vinconda (Vine+andaconda), at least that sounds good. As for the region, why? Im not sure what to say about that.

As Jessie would say in Sinnoh: 'a rose by any other name is just as sweet'. Are the names really that important?

As I had said somewhere else, the love/hate of new Pokemon is really a matter of opinions. Well, the same goes for names. When you get used to it, you'll feel like they're really good names! Of course, I didn't immediately get used to them either. Many of you must be thinking, "I can make names that make a load more sense than these!" But take a look at these name origins from Bulbapedia: Snivy=snake/snide + ivy (Of course! It's a snake, it's snide, it's tail is ivy leaf, & Snivy sounds ssssnappy) Tepig=Despite it sounds like "the pig", it's actually tepid + temperature + pig Oshawott=This is the weirdest name for me...but there're actually a lot of explanations for this name! Bulbapedia wrote: Oshawott possibly derives from ocean, shell, water & otter; it may possibly a corruption of "ocean water". It might make reference to Oshawa, Ontario, in Canada, as Canada contains many protected areas in which sea otters reside. It could also make reference to George Ohsawa, a famed dietian born into a poor samurai family during the Meiji Restoration of Japan. Unova=I haven't actually found anything for this yet, but personally I think it's united/unum (A lot of explanations for this...) + nova ("star that suddenly becomes much brighter for a short period" the spotlight shines on a completely new region!) What I'm actually trying to say is: Let's learn to appreciate the names.

No they aren't for various reasons but 1 has to wonder what were they thinking with some of them, I mean they really could have done a little better at least but again, they aren't that important really... ShinyLucario wrote: What I'm actually trying to say is: Let's learn to appreciate the names. I appreciate the effort they did put into the names, really but maybe sometimes trying to use names that connect to the species of the pokemon the name is for is not the best idea in the world, it doesn't always work out, just saying... I guess they do this every Gen so whatever, at least they give the ability to nickname pokemon so this though I don't like a portion of them will not matter in the end...

I would just like to point out, to everyone who dislikes these names, one simple fact:
You can rename your Pokemon to whatever you want. *gasp*
No, really, it's not like the names really matter; everyone will get used to them, or just nickname their pokes and move on.

I pretty sure they know that but would just like to get their whining & moaning out of the way & listing their like/dislike for the names is kind of the point of this topic... I am not even paying ShinyLucario's post anymore attention...

I got to agree with Lawence, get all our whinig out of the way now, so that when the game comes out we can focus on the game and not complain about the names of the pokemon.

Gotten a bit more used to Oshawotts but not Tepig, Unova is the region name & even though I dislike the change to it from Isshu, I don't have a problem with a region being called Unova, just wish it wasn't a region also called Isshu...
