I find Venusaur quite nice because of its status inflicting moves. I like to lead off with a Leech Seed then Razor Leaf and Synthesis when necessary. Sludge Bomb or Sleep Powder fills up the other slot. I like Charizard too, because it is Dragonish, but does anyone else think that Venusaur looks kind of... Dragony...? Or at least monterish.... no? Oh well, I'll sit in the corner with my Pichu toy.. hee hee, look it's got a yellow face! ...now I feel lonely.

OK, I shall illustrate the advantages of the kanto starters WITHOUT egg moves:

Charizard is a good special sweeper of wide variety.
Blastoise can tank well, good for longer battles. In game, revive makes this role redundant.
Venusaur is good all-round. In-game you do not want to pull off sleep powder + leech seed/sub, but this is vital in link duels. In game, sludge bomb, razor leaf and synthesis make nice combat moves.

But please breed them. Blastoise with Mirror coat or haze is excellent. Charizard with belly drum. Petal Dance or charm are decent on Venusaur.

As Venusaur suffers few penaltys by being chosen as a starter, it is the starter of choice.

But please, do not train your starter pok

Squirtle is probably the best starter to pick in FR/LG Surf needs to be used alot in the game and with a good Moveset Blastoise can easily take down te E4

Venusaur Is one of the best Grass/type In anygame period.
1) Ven-u-Saur= Dino-Saur...?eh?
2) Its good for Ground pokemon. As well as Water types.
3) Respectfully the only grass/type usable in E4...
4) Cannot get poisned with toxic/ can inflict sleep powder; leechseed, sunnyday solarbeam! holding quickclaw. yeah...

Blastoise. Can be replaced by Lapras, Vaporeon, Tentacruel, Gyradose(hmslave)

Charizard. Not to be raggin on this guy, but its not even dragon... Just like Gyradose isnt dragon... And the Quad weakness to Rock is a bummer.
other then that learns lots of great moves! I picked one of these for my LG.

{venusaur} :
Great for the first four gyms and Giovanni, though you'll need a poison type attack to make Erika weep. Considering your path is littered with Geodude's early on and Swimmers later in the game, Venusaur makes life a little less annoying.
In the metagame, it's weakness to psychic, ice and fire make it very vulnerable. Can use sunnybeam to make Solarbeam more effective, but why in God's green earth would you want to help opponent fry you to a crisp. Earthquake does cover that weakness though. Still if your looking for a grass type for your team Venusaur is definitely a wise choice, though Sceptile in my opinion is slightly better. It's stats are impressively balanced and make it a decent special sweeper. Also it's status effecting are always useful.

{blastoise} :
As with Venusaur, will do wonders with the Geodude infested caverns of Kanto. Squirtle walks all over Brock. Plus if you decide to hang on to it, Blaine and Giovanni become simple.
Arguably one of the best non-legendary water pokemon with an excellent movepool, which can easily cover it's two weakness to electric and grass. But due to the fact that dual-types such as Lapras and Swampert receive STAB bonuses for attacks such as Ice Beam and Earthquake it's not that popular, Blastoise in my mind is incredibly underrated. That being said, the fact that their is an insane number of decent water pokemon available probably doesn't help it's cause.Still it's special defense means it can probably survive a couple of heavy hits from it's weaknesses. A good tank with a decent special attack, Blastoise does nothing wrong, but there are more spectacular Water options available. Still, I go for Squirtle every time as it can pretty much deal with any Pokemon the game throws at you.

{charizard} :
Charizard has excellent versatility and with the introduction of Metal Claw to it's learnset is not quite as helpless as it was during the beginning of the game . As other users have stated you can probably get decent cover for Brock and Misty. As a fire type Charizard rockz the sockz, mainly as you can get it much earlier than Growlite or Vulpix depending on your version(more on this later). Still Mt.Moon will be a bit of bother for you, but nothing serious.
The most offensive of the starters, if raw power is your middle name Charizard is grrreat. It does have a nasty double weakness to rock and it's flying type makes it weak to electric. However it looses it's vulnerability to ground and renders grass and bug useless. It's movepool is amazing and your spoilt for choice of whether you want it as a physical or special sweeper.
I like Charizard, but it all depends on what game you have. In Leaf Green it's an excellent choice, as although I love Ninetales and Magmar, it's statistically superior. However in Fire Red the awesome Arcanine is available, and though ‘Zard can have better moves, Arcanine stats are brilliant. Still that’s just for in-game, Charizard is probably a better choice for link battles.

I’m biased towards {blastoise} as it’s my favorite pokemon. But all of them have different purposes and it all really depends on what kind of pokemon you’re looking for in your team.

i think Venusaur is the best for this reason-

HE BEATS 6/8 Gym Leaders by himself.......
the only two he is screwed on is Sabrina and Blaine

Blastoise is next- he's only screwed by misty and erica

Last is Zard, since he has the hardest path during the beggining of the game....

{charizard} because the only gyms you'll have problems with are the first 2 and then it's smooth sailing after that.

i go with Charizard everytime i can for a couple of reasons:

-yes he has a 4x weakness to rock but if u teach it EQ that's taken care of
-Metal claw makes him just as useful against brock and all of the geodudes in the caves as squirtle or bulbasaur
-fire types are waaaay rarer than they should be and Charizard is one of the best out there
-most useful versus the elite four (i beat all of them with Charizard only swapping out for Lorieli and a few times when i had to heal)
-allows u to catch the best water type pokemon in the game (imo) Suicune

so that's why i pick Charizard.

Even though I always either choose {squirtle} or {charmander}, {bulbasaur} is the best STARTER because it takes out the first two gym leaders by itself. By the time you get to the other gym leaders, you have the option to pick up pokemon that beat them easily(for example Diglet for Surge, Pidgeotto OR Fearow for Ericka, and so on and so forth.)

My favorites are {squirtle} and {charmander}. I think grass types just plain suck (I apologize for offending any tree huggers out there :D ). My reasons are that you can catch {entei} and {suicune} with them and they are freaking powerful in their final forms.

I also like Squirtle and Charizard, as I'm not fond of Bulbasuar, or Grass types in general.
Oh, and you're wrong, by the way; you catch {raikou} with Squirtle; to get Entei, you need to pick Bulbasaur.

I did mean {raikou} and not {entei}. My bad! My headache must be getting to me! :frustrated:

I like Charmander. Fire types kick butt.

I don't hate the other two but I find {charmander} to be a great deal of awesome.
