Cyndaquil is hands-down the best starter, mostly because it has a nice leg-up against the 2nd gym and Sprout Tower (not to mention the Steel-type gym later on).

It's hard to find Pokemon you can take with you all the way to the endgame, but the first one of those is Gastly, which you can find in Sprout Tower at night.

Other potential candidates include Onix (trade with an NPC for a Bellsprout), Dratini (Goldenrod Game Corner), and...wow, I don't even know. It's been so long since I've played this game. I know there are others, though. Oh! Magnemite on Route 38, that's one.

You missed your shot to get a Phanpy; They appear in the morning hours on the route through the gate you see on the first route between New Bark and Cherrygrove, only in Crystal. I think Jigglypuff appear there at night, too. Both are insanely rare but pretty worth it if you get them early on. I'd still recommend Phanpy if you head back to New Bark Town (after the Odd Egg hatches Elm calls you back there to show him, but by then the rest of your team will be way ahead of the wild Pokémon there...)

Once you clear Violet City, you can get a Wooper, always a keeper (unless you like Poliwrath or have some means of trading, to ultimately evolve your Poliwag into a Politoed). Mareep isn't in Crystal, sorry to say.

On Route 34, the Day Care couple will give you another egg and this one will hatch into any of the following: Pichu, Cleffa, Igglybuff, Tyrogue, Smoochum, Elekid, or Magby. And there's a sizable chance it'll be shiny, too. What will hatch, and whether or not it will be shiny, is determined when you pick the egg up, so if you want a shiny Raichu, Clefable, Wigglytuff, Hitmonlee/chan/top, Jynx, Electabuzz, or Magmar, you should save before you talk to the old guys in the house on Route 34 (it's after Ilex Forest) and not save again until you've walked enough that it hatches. Any of them would make fine party members and Pichu/Elekid would, I think, be your first chance to get an Electric-type.

On that same route, there are Abras around. Generic, but still a good Psychic-type. They teleport away at the first chance they get, so keep a Fast Ball on you if you want one (Kurt in Azalea Town makes them out of White Apricorns).

I don't really recommend raising a Togepi/Togetic. They aren't very strong and their move pool in generation 2 is very poor. They added Togekiss in Generation 4 for a good reason.

And that's about everything I can think of for the early parts of Crystal.

Noctowl's not a bad pick, you can teach it Hypnosis, Nightmare, Dream Eater and, for convenience's sake, Fly. Or Xatu. Lickitung, armed with the elemental punches and/or Surf or whatever, can be a contender. Heracross is a monster once it gets Megahorn and a tough Fighting move, too.

That...that's actually a very solid team all around. Espeon's far superior to Umbreon, since it's got the same Sp Atk and Speed as Gengar (130 and 110 base respectively), which is quite good. Plus, it's got Psychic and Morning Sun, which are both great.

For the Elite Four, the move types you will want are Psychic, Fire, Ice, Dark if possible, Water if possible, and Electric. For the most part, your team looks great.

At level 50 you'll plow over the elite four easily, the single highest-leveled Pokémon in it IS level 50. They were kind of a joke in gen 2.

That's a decent team
In my personal opinion it could stand to have {scizor} replaced with a {raichu}

I my opinion, Lugia doesn't worth in Crystal, unless you trade it from Silver. I think that because it doesn't know Aeroblast.
I think Tyranitar is better than Dragonite. Dragonite has a large movepool and is very versatile, but Tyranitar has a excellent combo.
Snorlax is also a good idea. Gengar is very good, but it has low Attack so Ghost moves will not worth.

I also like Dragonite. It is the first dragon Pokémon in the game, and I love Dragon Pokemon. But I never get a good strategy with it.
Actually, I never try a strategy with Dragonite.

My strategy for Dragonite is high risk and high return, i use the more powerful attacks on it. Like hyperbeam and other attacks like that. {dragonite} for the win.

Ahaha...yeah, that makes sense. Dragonite isn't bad, though...but I think Tyranitar is probably just better overall. That Rock/Dark typing is nothing to sneeze at, and his movepool is positively gigantic.
The downside? You can't get even his base form until after you beat Blue. That downside is gigantic as well.

I really hate the fact that it takes so long to obtain one, His move pool is monstrous, it supports for very strong movesets. With the right moveset it can own. Oh yeah almost 500 views 8-)

I always think to use Dragonite like that, but didn't know how to use it.

Totally agree with you.

This is the bad thing about Tyranitar. Fortunately, this change in HGSS.

Sometimes i cant decide which to use, either {dragonite} or {tyranitar} its a tough choice. But when it comes down to it i look at the natures of the two, i have a serious {tyranitar} and a jolly {dragonite} so i would pick the {dragonite}. But thats just me. And it flies, `nough said.
