Post subject:  Hyperbeam, Yes or No?

a few weeks ago evolved my {dragonair} into a {dragonite} , and now it is a level 85 w/ outrage, thunder wave, flamethrower , and wing attack. i was thinking about making thunder wave into thunderbolt and wing attack into ice beam instead of letting it learn hyperbeam any suggestions?

Hyperbeam is generally a bad idea - you have to sit out a turn after using it, allowing your opponent to set up his pokemon. A nice moveset if you want BoltBeam is Tbolt / Ice Beam / Substitute / Focus Punch. However, if your Dragonite is not trained (EVs and nature) you may want to hold off on using Substitute tutor and Focus Punch TM.

For more movesets for Dragonite, try looking at the Psydex.

The only pokemon who can use Hyper Beam effectively is Slaking, and only because it misses every other turn already anyways. Ice Beam would be far better than Hyper Beam, but Sion9 had some good suggestions too.

Ice beam because its annoying having to wait a turn for it to recharge.

More importantly, you'll do more damage overall by using Ice Beam (or some other similar attack) twice over two turns instead of using Hyper Beam that single time in the same two turns.

Dragonite actually has better Attack than Special Attack, so using an entirely Physical Sweeping moveset might actually be a better idea. It's up to you =)

Hyper Beam isn't even that ideal on Slaking. Sure, it doesn't mind not being able to select an attack on its next turn because it can't attack anyway, but it just might mind not being able to switch out as a side effect of the recharge turn of Hyper Beam.

Does Slaking even have that great of a special attack stat to even "abuse" Hyper Beam?

Btw, are there any Move Rememberers in FR/LG?

Edit: 95 base Sp.Atk. Decent, but would be worthless without EV-investment, which would be wasted EVs.

Ice beam would Give Dragonite more type coverage and over the course of two turns it would deal 190 damage and have a 20% chance of freezing, while hyper beam would only do 150 and can miss though it is not likely. However, I would make Dragonite a Pysical Sweeper because his max attack is 403 while his max Special attack is only 328.

Um, this is FRLG. Hyper Beam runs off the Attack stat.

Someone needs to go back to 5th grade and study probability.

Lolololol, it's actually a 19% overall probability of freezing over two turns. Math Majors FTW!

Dragoni-Boah much? lol.

Anyway, to answer the original question, Dragonite has decent stats in both Attack and Special Attack, but although Hyper Beam has more BP, and runs off his *higher* Attack stat, you need to rest one turn.

Ice Beam would be a better choice, but if you want to try using STAB, you may want to go for Dragon Claw or Outrage.

Edit: Wait, what the heck am I doing, Dragonite isn't a Normal-type. *removed stab'd hyper beam comment*

I'd go with Ice Beam.

You should EV it in SpAtk majorly though.

Slaking should have skill swap over Hyper Beam :P

Slaking doesn't learn Skill Swap. That would be too cheap.

Anyway, if you're looking for a physical Dragonite, it has a good physical learnset, but don't use Hyper Beam :)

Even though it is a BIG fact about the recharge, it is sort of like Explosion and Selfdestruct. It is Super handy when your Health is low, because you may be killed soon and you have NO healing items, You may as well do some SERIOUS damage before death.

I would go with Ice Beam

The overall damage from 2 ice beams would be less on a water, fire, or ice type compared to Hyper Beam

I meant in terms of overall Power, not taking into consideration typing. I can also argue that Hyper Beam would do less damage overall on a Steel or Rock type.

And even less on ghost.

Really though, guys, it's not the 90's anymore. Hyper beam is bad.

Ice Beam is not the Recharge one.
But as I said Earlier you may want to be able to do serious damage if you are not allowed to use or are out of healing items.
Ice Beam over 2 turns:190 damage, actually 5% possible to freeze Both turns.
10% on Each turn. (I am entering 8th grade and pokemon is more of a stored away thing.)
Hyper Beam: 150 damage, 1 turn Recharge.

Dragontrainer57: Dragonite Learns Hyper beam at Lv. 75, and the kanto dragons learn their moves at the same levels as Larvitar/Pupitar/Tyranitar. Example: Tyranitar and Dragonite Learn Hyper Beam at Lv. 75. This is the only move they both learn by Leveling up. I have a Lv. 62 Tyranitar and a Lv. 46 Dragonair.
