I've got Sapphire version with the lunatones in the meteor falls...I know it says 5% chance of moonstones being on lunatones, but I swear i coveted at least 30 and i haven't found one. Do Lunatones really carry these around?

They do - just keep trying.

But another way to get them, if you have FRLG, is to use Itemfinder in Mt. Moon (IIRC, there are 2-3 buried in there)

Yes, in fact they do. Its just hard to find a pokemon with an item.

5% isn't a lot. For 30 Lunatones, you're most likely to encounter only one with a Moonstone, so just keep trying.

Remember that the Pokemon who is using Covet cannot be holding any items, or you won't be able to steal anything.

You're just unlucky. In DP I used Covet against Chanseys and Pikachus to get Lucky Eggs and Light Balls (respectively), and even though the chances are usually slim, I switch in a Pokemon with Compoundeyes to boost my chances of a rare item (get yourself a Nincada and swap it out). With each item I got it on the 7th try. Most likely it'll work for you too; don't give up!

A good strategy, except that he's playing Sapphire...

only thing to do is keep trying, or try to get one from another game where it's easier.

I fail to see how that makes a difference. Unless...Was the Compoundeyes thing introduced in FRLG or something, like the Static and Flame Body things as well?

Yes, the effects outside of battle were introduced in emerald and therefore all the secondary effects are only viable in emerald and DP.
