Butterfree is NOT usually used (I think it's NU!). However, you might be able to get it to work. I would suggest, though going with more powerful pokemon that you'll catch later on.

It's pretty good, but mostly for the earlier part of the game where you don't have access to many Pokemon.

For recommended moveset(s), use the Standard Movesets Guide here: http://www.psypokes.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=891

I have a {butterfree} at level 47, but I don't use it for battling. The reason it's not used in battles is because its stats are lousy, and so are most of the moves it learns.

Mine is a capturing Pokemon, raised for its ability CompoundEyes which raises the accuracy of its Sleep Powder. I generally carry it with me everywhere in case I encounter that elusive Shiny Pokemon. Other than that, and the move Silver Wind for breeding onto another Bug Pokemon, {butterfree} isn't very useful.

I think Beedrill is better than a butterfree...
But if you still want to use butterfree, make sure it learned Psybeam.

Lol... No, and No. Beedrill's movepool is absolutely horrible (trust me, I've looked, it's a very bad pokemon to use in battling), and if you're absolutely going to teach Beedrill one move, teach it Silver Wind, for STAB, and because it's one of the few pokemon that will learn it be level up.

Psybeam is more powerful on {butterfree}, though, because even though its base damage is only slightly higher, {butterfree}'s Attack is only about half of its Special Attack (at least, that's the case for mine). Silver Wind isn't as damaging unless you have a nature that raises Attack or lowers Special Attack... or you're fighting against a Pokemon that's more vulnerable to Bug moves than Psychic. (Or maybe you're playing Pearl or Diamond, where Silver Wind is a special attack.)

It's probably best to give it both moves... and I'd recommend Sleep Powder too, because {butterfree}'s ability makes it nearly impossible to miss, rendering your opponent helpless.

If you like Butterfree, by all means keep it in your team - it has it's merits. It's passable for NPCs pre-league, but unless you spend a great deal of time training it, it'll get sqaushed.

I'm no expert on movesets; I actually tend to go for a sweeping arrangement with most Pokémon, so don't pay much attention to this, but if you like it, batter on!

Butterfree is very much a Special Pokémon, in that it's physical aspects are somewhat lacking, so: Silver Wind, Psychic, Giga Drain and Sleep Powder would be my preferred moveset. Train it towards speed, and thanks to it's Compound Eyes ability, it's Sleep Powder will be a lot more accurate, as DarkAriados mentioned before me.

Good luck!

i onced used butterfree for sabrina, and i have to say, silver wind is amazing for a bug attack. I think butterfree is probably the best bug pokemon out there, i dont like heracross - it may have a sky high attack, but i think its too easily damaged
