You can save and reset before talking to Backlot in the Trophy Garden to change the Pokemon in the garden. I've tried it myself for Porygon to appear in the garden instead of Plusle and Minun for the tenth time lol.

EDIT:

I was just trying a Bidoof chain, which I thought would be literally undestructible (seeing how I'm actually chaining the infamous Pokemon with a PhD in chain-breaking), but it still broke at 10. What annoyed me the most was that I was following all the chaining rules (I won't bother posting them here, since I assume you know them).

The shiny patch popped up after the 27th link. I got lucky :p

Sorry to hear that, Wai D:
In my personal experience, I would think that I was following the rules each time, but then something else would pop up that would cause me to rethink my chaining strategy. The whole thing is a process of trail and error, really. Just keep practicing and adjusting as you go.

...I'm surprised to hear that reseting works with Backlot. I might have to try that and get another shiny Eevee...or seven :p

My best three chains are 13, 13, and 30. I just got that 30 now, on pacharisu. Then a goddamned Buziel breaks my best chain ever. >:[

Don't give up! I've had some pretty high chains break on me too. Don't let today's failures slow you down though. Keep plugging away, and your persistence will be rewarded. Before I got my shiny Eevee, I must have had somewhere between 10-15 chains (not links, but whole chains) break on me. I kept at it and eventually got one before the day was over.

I guess everyone feels very insecure when going from one patch to another. I've even had Bidoofs breaking my Bidoof chain :? strange.

Haha, I know exactly what you mean. At times, it feels like I've developed a sixth sense for that sort of thing :p

I've got an idea. If you can jot down a few notes detailing how each of your chains break, maybe I can help you figure out what's going wrong.

Yeah, it can be frustrating, but the payoff is worth it.
I kept working at it last night and got five shiny {minun} from a chain of 51!

use Repels. They repel regular encounters but not walking into radar bushes.

Like they said, chaining is very frustrating, but I guess it's worth it. And it's a MUST to use repels. Unless you use them, you've got loads of Bidoof just waiting to pounce on you and break your chains.

They're like the zombies of the Pokemon world, huh? :p

Caught two shiny {plusle} earlier tonight. I think I'm going to need to take a break sometime in the future. My wrists are killing me x_x;

When chaining Beldum, which patches of grass do you choose, the wiggling ones or the flickering ones? The flickering ones are much easier to see in the sandstorm, but from my experiences, the chains have broken more easily using the flickering patches.

Also, I don't think the "safe patches" diagram is that simple. Here's what I think:

4444X4444
433333334
432222234
432111234
X321O123X
432111234
432222234
433333334
4444X4444

Same as before, but I've had numerous chains being broken at the spots marked "X".

And just then, my Beldum chain was broken at 28 by a #%%@#$%@3 Hippowdon. *proceeds to torture and give the Hippowdon a very painful death* I still haven't been able to get past 28 Beldum. My chain has broken at exactly 28 three times!!! So after working on that chain for nearly two hours, it's all gone into a waste. AGAIN.

Actually, the original diagram is correct. The problem with the "X" patches you pointed out is that sometimes a patch on the same row will appear in the 3 zone like so:

444444444
433333334
432222234
432111234
432101234
432111234
432222234
433333334
444444444

In this example, you would think that it would be safe to walk into the green patch. However, doing so would put the patch in zone three too close to the edge of the screen, breaking the chain. The same concept applies everywhere throughout the grid.

If I feel that a particular chain is being a little vulnerable at the moment, I take it a step further and avoid patches if there is one on the opposite end in zone 2. Probably a little too cautious on my part, but it works.

Also, don't forget that you don't have to get to 40 to find a shiny. You could always stop where you are and just reset until a shiny patch pops up.

Ah, I didn't know that. I think that may have been the problem why my chains were mysteriously breaking. Still, knowing that rule doesn't help when I'm trying to chain Beldums hahaha. I'd be lucky to just see two patches of grass due to that annoying sandstorm. :P

I know about the shiny probability thing, where 40 is the minimum chain length for the max probability of a shiny popping up. I could have started resetting at 28, but when I was doing Starly at 44, it took nearly an hour after the resetting method until the shiny popped up. I'm not exactly the luckiest person hehehe.

If it's any consolation, 28 is a lot bigger than my biggest Beldum chain :p

What was your longest Beldum chain? Did you get a shiny for it? It's the Beldum swarm for me again today (during my exam period of course... what a coincidence :?)

The first time I reached 28 Beldum, I accidently broke the chain because the repel had run out, and I was distracted moving Leftovers, EXP Share and some other items around to different Pokemon, and I forgot to use a repel. I moved one square and a wild Hippowdon showed up. *sigh* I reached 28 blindly. I couldn't see the patches of grass that were relevant to the radar, and I just had to make my way blindly to the "4" patches and move about, hoping not to run into any other patches along the way.

Well, I've only actually tried chaining them once, so I don't think I even made it to the double digits XD

I've broken a chain that way before too. It's aggrivating when it happens, but I've pretty much gotten myself used to the routine of double checking as I go now.

I wish I could've chained today. I've been doing it so much that I finally just needed to give my wrists a rest. Tomorrow will be Vulpixes though. I've been raising a Mr. Mime for just such an occasion.

I'm close to giving up altogether. The sandstorm is seriously getting on my nerves, and the only time of the day when I can actually notice any of the patches moving is during broad daylight (around 12pm). The sunset is no good for me, and night time is even worse. Does the sandstorm actually get worse during different times of the day? Which time of the day for chaining Beldum works for you?

I've just been wondering now why I'm so determined to get a shiny Beldum... perhaps I think it looks awesome in its shiny form? It has one of the best shiny colour combinations.

I've actually had more luck fishing than chaining, but both my shiny Magikarp and Carvanha were from Sapphire.

Hmm...I don't think the sandstorm gets worse at certain times. Come to think of it, I wonder what time most people chain...

For some reason, I have better luck chaining at night, so that's when I'm usually hunting. I could break chains all day and end up with a really good one at night.

Beldum -does- look nice. Whatever your reason for chaining, don't give up on it! I didn't give up on finding a shiny Electrike, and that one took me about a week to get.

Fishing... How long did it take you to find those shinies? I've never really actively looked for water shinies.

...As I post, I'm on a chain of 40, on Electrike. OMG. 41 Max Repels left. Wish me luck!

Edit: Excuse me while I go jump off a cliff, holding a chain breaking Bidoof. I'm testing to see if it can be used to break falls, too.

Oh come on! I have yet to even encounter a shiny pok'emon!
This bites. Why do I even try to find the things to begin with?
