It really doesn't matter which one you get. Personally I like torchic because if you evolve it before the first gym, you can destroy all of Roxanne's pokemon with 1 (or 2) double kicks. Also blaziken looks cool. ^_^

Pick the ont which best suits your style. If you want a fast one, get {treecko}; if you want one that can mix-sweep, get {torchic}; and {mudkip}({swampert}) can work as a physical/mixed sweeper, or play Wobbuffet's role (counter+mirror coat). It's up to you.

I would pick Mudkip cause when it evolves into Swampert it is incredible!cause with Swampert he only has 1 weakness which is grass so Swampert could pretty much kill about anything.

I would also choose mudkip, you run into more trainer and people that have pokemon that are weak against water type.

And with Swampert he has wise stats except his speed.

Mudkip. Once it evolves, it has no weakness to any gym. It's RAWKS.

Plus, STAB'd EQ and Surf, 2 very good end-game moves, Ice Beam, and you've got a MONSTER.

I would have to say go with your favorite. It doesn't matter as long as you train it good and give it good moves.

All the starters have different good points - so pick the one that best suits your battling style. I chose {torchic} because it's the cutest, and grows into {blaziken} which is a great mixed sweeper. Play to your strengths!

{treecko} - Blindingly fast, and it evolves into {sceptile} which can be taught Thunderpunch, so you can cover some of its weaknesses. As a Grass type, it has many weaknesses, but its high Special Attack and Speed may let it get the first strike, so you can take down even Pokemon with a type advantage against it. The downside is, if {sceptile} happens to be pitted against a faster Pokemon, like {swellow}, it'll be creamed - it has very ordinary defences.

{torchic} - Also quite speedy, and also capable of serving as a sweeper once it evolves. {blaziken} is capable of learning Thunderpunch as well, to cover its weaknesses to the Flying and Water types. Its Attack and Special Attack stats are both high, making it a great mixed sweeper (unlike {sceptile} which has high Special Attack but low Attack, and thus has no chance against a Special Tanker such as {blissey}). It has a better moveset scope than {sceptile}, but is not as quick. And like {sceptile}, its defences aren't exactly awesome, making it vulnerable to severe damage from faster foes.

{mudkip} - The best of the three starters for a Tanking Pokemon. {swampert} has only one weakness - the Grass type - which can be covered with the ever-popular Ice Beam. Although it has mediocre Speed, and easily falls victim to {sceptile} and its Leaf Blade, against any other type it can withstand a fair few hits, and also packs a real punch in return. Giving it Rest is a smart move, making it even more difficult to take down. But watch out - even with decent Special Defence, {swampert} is easily knocked out in one hit by a powerful Grass-type move.

^Very comprehensive summary, Dark Ariados.

I picked Treecko myself, and found him very easy to handle, even against Wattson (well, he did have Leaf Blade by then). (I also had to raise a Plusle to take on the 2-on-2 leaders, and he proved very useful against Flannery, despite his low defense.) I have tried using the other starters, and for me personally, Blaziken seemed to have lower stats, while Swampert had pretty good stats but I couldn't get used to his moves. And, since SpAtk and Spd are my favorite stats - I went big on the gecko. But honestly, any of them would be a good choice
