Does anybody know why the original green version was never released for the US?

Apparently, it was written in error somewhere, to color the cartridges red and blue, as opposed to red and green.

And thus, we have RBY, not RGY

In japan there was Red and green; but they upgraded it and made it red and blue

Originally, Red and Green were released in Japan. A little while later, they released Blue, with updated graphics and a different combination of pokémon to catch. Green did poorly in Japan though, so when it was brought to the rest of the world, they scrapped Green, used the graphics from Blue and tweaked the pokémon between them.

We really didn't miss out on much other than catching Bellsprout right at first and terrible graphics.

This should clear up all your doubts and queries about Pokemon Green, and why it was never released outside of Japan, etc.

Quote:
In Japan, Pocket Monsters was first released as Pocket Monsters Aka (ポケットモンスター 赤, Poketto Monsutā Aka?, "Pocket Monsters Red") and Pocket Monsters Midori (ポケットモンスター 緑, Poketto Monsutā Midori?, "Pocket Monsters Green") while Red and Blue were released in North America and elsewhere. In Japan, Pocket Monsters Ao (ポケットモンスター 青, Poketto Monsutā Ao?, "Pocket Monsters Blue"), with improved graphics as opposed to the older first-generation games, was released after the original Aka and Midori. It contained Pokémon that could be found in places not originally in the Aka and Midori versions. An example is that Ditto was added to the Rock Tunnel and Lickitung could be caught in the wild. Also, Unknown Dungeon was totally redesigned, and its layout was used by the Red and Blue versions.

Although Pokémon Green was never released outside of Japan, Pokémon Blue is based on Pocket Monsters Ao's engine and graphics, with Pocket Monsters Midori's wild and trade Pokémon. Similarly for Pokémon Red, it too was based on Pocket Monsters Ao's engine and graphics, with Pocket Monsters Aka's wild and trade Pokémon.

The only reason is because the Green version sucked. The graphics were horrible there weren't any cries. Everything sucked.

There are pokémon cries.

I'm fairly certain they're the same cries they've always been.

Only thing that changed was the front graphics of the pokémon and the layout of the Mewtwo cave. Attacks and sounds stayed the same.

If you physically have a Pokémon Green cartrage in a language other than Japanese, it has to be a bootleg. Green wasn't released in any language other than Japanese.

If it's just a ROM though, that makes sence.

I bought a Green version on Ebay. Can you really get Mew if you complete the Pokedex? or do you have to use the Mew Glitch?

Funny thing is that I only had Pokemon Blue Version & I have nevered seen Ditto in Rock Tunnel or Found Lickitung in the wild, must be just the Japanese Blue Version only, *sign*...boo, though I didn't know that there was ever a Blue Version released in Japan but apparently it was & after Red & Green Versions were...interesting story here, Pokemon Green sucked, wow...

Post subject:  Re: Green Version

That looks fake simply based off the fact that even Pokemon Red & Blue had color coded cartridges...this only has the sticker color coded...other then that I say I don't know cause it's the japanese game cart so maybe it's real, maybe...
