Fishing... How long did it take you to find those shinies? I've never really actively looked for water shinies.

With Magikarp, I was fishing around in Sootopolis (the area behind the gym), although I forgot what I was aiming for. After half an hour, the shiny Magikarp popped up.

With Carvanha, I was trying to find the Feebas squares again in Route 119. I fished in the squares where I had a vague idea of Feebas popping up, and after around 10 minutes, the shiny Carvanha popped up. I didn't manage to find the Feebas squares again, but it was worth my time.

Haha, kinda gives a new meaning to the phrase "lucky catch." There are some water pogeys I'd really like to find a shiny of, but I'm not sure I have the patience to sit and fish for them.

I didn't see the patch above me. I walked up, and into it it.

Ouch, that sucks x.x;
Make it a practice not to walk up unless you can see all four patches shaking. That's what I do.

Edit: I've got a pretty good {vulpix} chain going on at the moment. 53 links with five shinies.

Edit 2: The chain ended at 87. I got two more shinies out of it, but sacrificed my sleeping hours to do it XD

Wow... 87 Vulpix. All I'm aiming for at the moment is to beat my own longest chain records, which I have failed for nearly nine times now? Just then, my chain of 26 Bidoof was broken by another Bidoof. Four patches away, within radar range, same shaking pattern. ARGH.

Edit 1: I'm now back in a chain of 27 Bidoof, Route 201, where the encounter rate is 50%. I'm trying to further lengthen my chain, but the radar keeps giving me dodgy patches... I hope my repels don't run out... o_O

Edit 2: Now on 37 Bidoof *starts sweating*...

Edit 3: Finally! I reached 40 Bidoof... now I'm just resetting until the shiny appears... ... ... ... ... it's taking an awful long time...

Edit 4: And the shiny Bidoof is mine!!! I always catch my shinies using Premier Balls (except my Bulbasaur, of course). I was aiming to get a second shiny Bidoof so I could just evolve one to Bibarel, so I could see both shiny forms, but I accidently ran into a dodgy patch at 43. :? At least the chain was worthwhile! :P

Good job! Ha, what a great day it's been already! You and another person I've been helping both got some good results for your hard work. Contratulations! :3

So you like Premier Balls eh? I've got a thing for Luxury Balls XD All but two of my shinies were caught with them.

I can't believe how many shinies you are catching! I have tried for hours & I can't get my chains past like 25. It looks like the key is the zones. So you don't want to go past zone 4, is that right? My swarm is {doduo} today & I'm gonna try to chain a shiny tonight. Any light shed would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm...really, all I can say is that the guide that was posted earlier in the thread should be able to help you with most of the rules.

http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=226939 <---There it is just in case you need it.

If you have trouble with anything else, let me know. Just like I offered to Wai earlier in the thread, I would be happy to assist if you need it. Just be sure to jot down a few notes about what you were doing if/when the chain breaks...maybe we can figure out the problem from there.

Kurushel, I really have to thank you for showing me that shiny rule regarding the radar's zone. I'll just emphasise on three rules that I took extra notice of for the first time last night to catch my shiny Bidoof:

Never go to a wiggling patch of grass that's along the edge. I avoided going to them for the entire Bidoof chain and it didn't break.

Never go to a wiggling patch of grass that will force other wiggling patches of grass to go off the screen. For example, you may see two distant wiggling patches of grass in the zone 3 and 4 range, but they are at opposite ends. Going to either of them will probably break your chain because it forces the other to go off the screen.

Make sure it takes you less than seven steps to go to a particular patch. This was a rule from Shuko's list.

And there you have it, it worked for me. I've caught two of the easiest Pokemon to chain; Starly and Bidoof. I'll try something harder, and one day I'll fetch that shiny Beldum...

Not a problem, Wai! I enjoy catching shinies, so I enjoy helping others do the same :3

Just to expand a bit on your first point about edges...

Green = ideal patch to walk into
Red = unsafe patch
Yellow = your current position in the grass
Dark red = prospective radar range

444444444
433333334
432222234
432111234
432101234
432111234
432222234
433333334
444444444

Let's say that the entire area of grass you're standing in is just big enough to encompass the radar range (all four zones). Normally, it would be safe to walk into the patch shaking in zone four. However...

444444444
433333334
432222234
432111234
432101234
432111234
432222234
433333334
444444444

By walking into a patch on the edge of the grass, you sacrifice nearly half of your radar range. Each time you walk into a grass patch, the next set of grass patches is randomly selected right before you enter battle. If all of the randomly selected patches happen to end up outside of the grass, the chain will break because you won't have anything to walk into.

This is also why you don't want to go to patches in corners, as that will cost you even more of your range. Fortunately, there is a way to ensure that there is a chance you will always have at least one patch of grass shaking.

x = grass outside the radar range
blue = prospective zone 1
xxxxxxxxxxxx
x444444444x
x433333334x
x432222234x
x432111234x
x432101234x
x432111234x
x432222234x
x433333334x
x444444444x
xxxxxxxxxxxx

It's safe to walk into the patch in zone four for one reason alone: all of zone 1 is showing. One patch absolutely must appear in each zone, so if you at least keep zone 1 in the grass, you keep your chain safe.

One thing I don't get is the 7 step rule. Some of the spaces in zone 4 are more than 7 steps. It looks like if all of the "next zone 1" is in view from your starting point, then that is okay.

Other than that I think I am doing everything pretty close if not right on to how the rules are stated. It just seems my chains will end for no reason.

I'm not too sure about that 7 step thing. I've gone to the very corner of zone 4 several times before without breaking a chain.

I got to a chain of 40 Lickitung in no time. It only took me about an hour and a half or less. However, it took over an hour or two before the shiny patch showed up... the constant resetting and waiting was irritating... :?

The shiny Lickitung showed up for me at 42 (but I had resetted hundreds of times before lol). I caught it of course, but the chain broke at 45 by a Bibarel. As usual, any Pokemon that breaks one of my chains is tortured for several turns before I faint it. *evil laugh*

Good job! Haha, poor Bibarel :p

I think I made a mistake in staying up last night to chain. My vision was so blurry that I really couldn't see what I was doing. I had a chain of Skuntank and a chain of Slakoth both break at 35. Oddly enough, it didn't really phase me. I suppose when you've chained enough times, you kinda get to a point where you don't really sweat the small stuff.

The universe is teasing me, I know it.

Today is 9/11/07 (in English form). To me, if I see 9 and 11 in the same place, it's lucky (of course, ignoring what happened on the 9/11 American date).

Guess what? Electrike's back.
Let's try again.

Luckily, not many life or death situations depend on shiny catching.

Anyway, my chain broke at 25. Damn Mareep.

Anyways, Pok'eradar is how I catch all my shinies. Anyways, just don't go over 7 steps. My chains break when that happens.

Told you I was lucky.

Just before I tried for the second time today, I was at Giratina's cave, about to give up and leave. I found him, with just my lv58 alakazam left. I used one grass knot, then my only ultra ball. Caught him, and he's adamant. =D

And now, I'm on about 39 electrikes.

Good luck on the Electrike chain! Well, I assume you've got some results now? Did you catch a shiny?

Oddly for me, my chains have always broken at an odd number.

... DIE ELECTRIKES DIE.

It broke at 41 again, at exactly the same way.
