I've been looking into it lately and I've slowly been uncovering the origins behind Pokèmon.
I know that Mudkip is the obvious Mudskipper.
Charmander is a salamander with a candle on its tail. Squirtle is a turtle with a squirrel tail and a water gun glued to its back.
Magikarp and Gyarados originated from the legend of Carps being able to swim up a waterfall turning into dragons.
I want to be able to construct a list of all pokemon origins. If you have any, post them. All 649 are welcome.
Mudkip Magikarp Gyarados
That's three... Just 646 to go.
P.S Shuppet is Rotom with a sheet.... Even though Shuppet was made first...

There is a great number which have no special origin, such as the bird, squirrel and cat family of each Gen. So I'm gonna comment on something else. Vulpix-Ninetales: Kyuubi, meaning nine-tailed fox, is a legendary Japanese creature. Nincada-Ninjask-Shedinja: Nincada is a trainee ninja, Ninjask is a trained ninja and Shedinja is the lone ninja who wanders the world and has no clan.

I'm pretty sure we had a similar thread a while back. And I'm going to say the same thing. There's a series of articles here that go in-depth on the subject. They're quite interesting.

I had a whole explanation of the fossil Pokemon's relations to actual prehistoric creatures, but then realized that Frost had already covered all of them, with links and everything. *claps* I've always loved the fossil Pokemon in particular, because of the inspiration they draw from extinct life forms, and how they're represented in Pokemon form. This is mainly due to my ambitions to enter the field of paleontology, since I've been a dinosaur nut for as long as I can remember.
Also, just to note, the name of an Armaldo I had in an old RP was Maloc, referencing the Anomalocaris, which it gets it's roots from.
