Argh, if we're having tests now I think I'm gonna get fired quickly. I'll keep training, but I may have to rethink my Gym's theme...oh well. And, Chef, the only problem I see with using your tournament as a Gym Leader appointing thingy is that we won't be using the same Pokemon for both things. Not one of my normal Pokemon is going into my Gym. That may just be me, but still.

The point of a gym test is not to see how good your Pokemon that you plan to use are. It is too see how good your aptitude as a battler is and to see if you are good enough to be a gym leader.

Players that win Chef's tournament will have demonstrated a strong understanding of strategy/tactics. However, building a theme team is not the same as using a standard OU team, and so I would say that test battles should still be used.

It's also a chance to expose weaknesses of the theme before the actual gym is opened. "There is no teacher but the enemy" when it comes to discovering a team's weaknesses (Orson Scott Card, Ender's Game). The best way to determine whether you can handle your team's theoretical weak points (like a BoltBeamer Starmie against a Flying team) is to try it out. I couldn't resist the quote.

Has anyone decided if I could use all Dittos? Technically, Ditto is all species of Pokemon, so I'm not violating Species Clause...

I disagree with your assessment of Ditto as "all" species of pokemon...although to be honest, I doubt you could prove the effectiveness of an all Ditto team if you had a test battle. There's a reason it's not even UU.

Alright, you guys make excellent points. I just thought an all Ditto team would be silly and fun, not necessarily uber-caliber destructio-team. I guess I'll think of a new team, but for now, I'm gonna go with my second application with Mr. Mime et al.

And when I said Ditto is all species, I meant it had the potential to be all species, not it literally is evey Pokemon forever and ever.

All applicants will face me in a battle (as I will not likely be making a gym), after which I'll decide if they are accepted, denied, or will have to face me again (which will only happen in instances of extremely unbalanced and game-changing hax from either side). People who beat me without help from unbalanced hax on their side will be automatically accepted. I will decide what constitutes unbalanced hax on a case-by-case basis.

With our Gym teams, or just a team so you can gauge our battling prowess? And I think most of the other Leader applicants will agree with me when I say there should be no hax in the Gyms. Period. Just normal hard work and training.

Hax? Critical hits and Flinching is a part of the game, if you ask me. And what if the chances of a critical hit or a flinch were more common than not? Would that be considered hax?

Well, I wouldn't call my team standard, but okay. I do like the method of Chef's cup deciding a few gym leaders.

With your actual Gym Team.

I believe he's talking about real hacks (i.e. Roar of Time on a Bidoof), not the slang "hax" that people say when Pokemon get critical hits/flinch/whatever.

For the record, Chef has the most awesome theme so far, in my opinion. :)

And nothing personal Cactuar, but I think having a whole region as your theme is kinda vague and... pardon me for saying so... boring. By all means, you are allowed to use it as your theme, but I just think you're capable of pulling off something more clever. I'm sure you'll still whip up a a good team, though.

Actually, I was talking about hax as in Crits and flinches. What I was referring to wasn't untimely misses of Fire Blast on the last turn of the game - thats just part of the game and the person should be able to show battle competency from the rest of it. I'm talking about the times when Ice Beam freezes half the team at once or when Stone Edge misses all but 1 time out of the 8 PP, or when Bullet Punch CHs three times in a row on something that a normal hit wouldn't manage a 3HKO on. In those cases, it really isn't fair, let alone practical, to judge a player's skill because you can't tell if the outcome would have been the same had those freezes/misses/CHs not occured.

I'm sorry I couldn't take the time out of my life to answer every question in this thread all at once. You're clearly being neglected and ignored, and I should cater to your every need. I mean, I don't have anything better to do than attempt to run a "Gym League" in a forum section for a game aspect I don't give a bloody hoot about.

The answer is no.

Are we allowed to have rules for challengers as well? Like challengers have to have something that fits out theme? Just curious. Anyway, I think I've got a new theme. I'm gonna go with blue. Just blue colored Pokemon. So:

Gym Theme: The Color Blue

Gym Battle Type: 6v6 Singles

Teh Team: Nidoqueen @ Leftovers
Gyrados @ Life Orb
Heracross @ Choice Band
Lucario @ Chople Berry or Occa Berry (not sure which)
Metagross @ Choice Scarf
Gardevoir (legit shiny) @ Expert Belt

As back-up Pokemon, I'll have Empoleon, Bronzong, Suicune, Swampert, Wailord, Feraligatr, Blastoise, Luxray, Salamence, Tangrowth, Rampardos, Regice, and Vaporeon. I liek blue.

If we can make challenger rules, then I decree no blue Pokemon may be used against me. Other colors are fine, even Purple. My badge is a blue crayon. I'll mail it if you win.

If so I don't think you should do anything that extreme because that knocks off a decent chunk of Pokemon. I am probably going to go with the basic rule only the challenger may make switches during the battle like in the show.

That sounds more like a limitation on the gym leader than on the challenger. In any case, competitive battling does not have the real-time aspect as in the anime. Rules imposed on challengers would therefore tend to be more suited to competitive battling, such as Stealth Rock Clause in a Flying type gym.

Emin Jofit wrote:

On the other hand, rules such as this actually go against the spirit of gym battling in the anime, and serve no competitive purpose.

A nice badge system is one in which the badges are displayed as an image in a signature, as well as "officially" recorded in a thread by a moderator to avoid cheating.

In the anime Gym Battling, Ash beat Brock's Onix with Thunderbolt and a sprinkler. If they can do that, I can do strange things in my Gym. And in the "spirit" of anime Gym Battling, we'd have to give out badges/victories to people who just fought valiantly/displayed some heroism/taught us a life lesson. And from a competitve standpoint, it poses an even greater challenge for anyone partaking in the Gym Challenge. It's gonna be hard to create a competitvely viable team with no blue Pokemon; therefore it will force anyone who wishes to challenge me to go out and train some new Pokemon, increasing their own teams' potency as well as helping them prepare for other Gyms. But whatevs, if it's completely unreasonable I'll take it out. If you guys haven't gathered yet, I'm going for a quirky Gym here.

Nope, you win you get a crayon and like it. Maybe I'll glue a pin to it so you can wear it around and show your friends. :P
Nah, seriously I was the one who proposed Gym Badges in sigs in the original thread, so I think that'd be really cool if we could ever set that up. That can wait until we actually have things set up, though.

If we ever got this set up, I could make a program to easily create a single image containing every badge for signatures...

Hi everybody!!!
I got my team ready. Sorry I'm late. I was sick last week. I got my team ready.

Gym Theme: Water-Type Pokemon

Gym Battle Type: 4v4 Double Battle (My idea is to bring 4 of my Pokemon randomly to battle and the opponent brings their 4. Then we have a double battle and see who wins.)

Primary Team: Gorebyss @ Leftovers
Kingdra @ Dragon Fang
Milotic @ Zoom Lens
Vaporeon @ Mystic Water
Blastoise @ Focus Sash
Leafeon @ Miracle Seed

Okay!!! That's my team. My wildcard is Leafeon and it like one of my best Pokemon. I can battle, hopefully this weekend. (still catching up on my missed homework)

Thanks,
Psychic_Espeon_16
