Post subject:  Physical Attacks against Status inducing Abilities

This thing has been bugging me for a while now, and I need it sorted out:

The abilities, Static and Poison Point (and any others,) they are activated by certain moves.

For example:

Gyarados used Bite on Nidorino.
Gyarados was Poisoned by Nidorino's Poison Point.

However, if that same Gyarados used EQ, it doesn't get Poisoned, despite the fact that EQ is a physical move.

Now before everyone tells me that the above abilites work only 30% of the time, and it was just luck, I can tell you that I have done extensive testing and my Gyara has not been poisoned by a Nidorino after 20 EQs.

So, despite their being a Physical/SPecial split, is there also a sub-division in Physical of Physical-Contact/Physical-non-contact/Special?

Sorry, it's just been bugging me, and I'd like the question to be answered. ;)

Hmmmmmm, I noticed that too. Maybe when you use a move super-effective it doesn't work? Or maybe EQ is just unique in that way.....

As far as I can tell, there is a split between Physical moves.
There are the physical attacks that make contact with the target and would thus trigger effects like Effect Spore, Rough Skin, or Poison Point.
Then there are physical attacks that don't cause the user and target to make contact. Examples include Earthquake and Attack Order.
In the same way, some Special attacks would cause these abilities to come into effect. A good example of this is Grass Knot.

I'm not sure if this is even correct, but I just tought in this:

Maybe those ability effects are like counters: they work like the move Counter, but instead of causing damage, they cause Paralysis, Poison, etc. Now, maybe that "counter status" copies the type of the attack received.
That would explain why Gyarados never got poisoned: because the counter poison of Nidorino became Ground type and Gyarados is immune to that type.

in 3rd gen, there was a split between attacks that required physical contact and those that didn't. That split probably still holds true (and the new moves are further split on whether they have physical contact)

It can be seen here that EQ does not require physical contact (under the "direct attack").

Yeah this information is already in the psydex, Physical moves and physical contact moves are different things.

I mean, it doesn't take a genius to figure out biting something poisonous might inflict poison but hitting it with a rock, or in this case an earthquake wouldn't. It's something that's been in the games quite a while.

Having universe defying magical attacks is different from not being able to tell that hitting something with a rock doesn't require you to touch it.
