Oh yeah, drawings.

Now that I started playing Diamond, I've found myself coming here more often.
So, I thought I could make an art topic here. :P

I don't have a lot of stuff to put here right now, but I shall draw much more soon.
You can't use these in anything without my permission, and don't you dare to steal them or claim 'em as your own.

My dA gallery.
Most of it is crap, and I haven't submitted anything for a while. :D

Sketch and the finished version
This guy is Omicron, and he's a dragon.
Done completely with Paint Shop Pro 9.

Milky Way
A little photomanip I did a while ago. Its quality isn't the best, but the idea is kinda good... I guess.
PSP 9

Random experiment
I just played with Paint Shop Pro's art media stuff.

Trojan
Try not to let her inside your computer, or you'll find yourself in the middle of a nightmare. (Sorry for the bad pun)
I can't draw horses very well, but anyway. I tried a more simple shading style with it.
The lineart was drawn by hand and scanned, coloured with Photoshop CS.
(And yes, Sprite Killer=me, it's the name I use on some other forums)

So, any comments, critique or advice? I'd really like to hear your thoughts.

Not bad. I actually like your Omicron sketch more than the finished product. Keep working on coloring and I'm sure that'll change. Work on hands, even if they are a pain in the ass. Would you mind showing a step by step of your process and what you use to draw, on paper not on the computer (unless you have a tablet).

Are you working on realism? By working on realism, and becoming proficient in that, you should be able to transfer knowledge and techniques to a cartoon style. If I can find a scanner that I'm allowed to use at school, I can try to show you how I do hands (realism). Basically it's with basic shapes. Usually the palm is a square and you can use rectangles to make out the rough shape of the fingers. I use a light pencil (2H) for that and then switch to HB and add some contour lines. That usually helps you get the proportions right which saves a lot of time.

Otherwise your figure drawing looks pretty good. I'd start referencing and practicing drawing reptiles, people, and birds for your Omicron character. That would help with shading which would, in turn, help your coloring.

Trojan as a whole creeped me out...smiling horse...I don't have horse anatomy memorized, but if you were trying to have more human than not in her body then I think her elbow was just a touch too low.

Well thank you. :D
It was nice to check the topic and see someone actually had critisized my stuff.

I can show how I draw, step by step, but I'll just have to get my lazy ass up and drag myself to the scanner. : P
I don't have a working tablet (yet, I'm thinking of getting one)
I'll try to do that as soon as I can. (by the way, I also like the sketch more, the facial impression looked better in it)

And yeah, hands are :censored: annoying most of the time, I still can't draw them properly. I'm trying kinda hard, but still... ugh.
Human anatomy can also be a problem to me sometimes, but I'm practising a lot (on my religion lessons, for example ;))

I have no idea if Trojan has more human or horse in it, and it was a spur-of-the-moment kind of drawing so I really didn't think 'bout its anatomy that much. :D
I think I should draw it/her again and better.

Oh and I almost forgot this little thing I made out of boredom.
It's some sort of backstory-ish thing for a character I'm gonna draw sooner or later.

Human anatomy's a pain in general, in a lot of ways. There are a lot of little things that can make or break a good figure drawing. Still, it can be really fun. And once you figure out a system, even hands can be enjoyable.

I'd like to see some of your pencil drawings, if you have any. They can include finished pieces or sketches; it doesn't really matter.

For your little side piece, I can't say much other than a few grammatical things in the text. I'm not really sure how I feel about its name. I think it's more of a crossbow than a "ray." Whenever I think of "rays" I think of something futuristic, but that's a stereotype. What you did isn't wrong; it's just something I don't prefer, personally. I'd blur the grain a little too, aged paper doesn't have spots that makes it look old, after all.

Post subject:  Re: Those things you do with a paper and a pencil

I named it "Ray" because for some reason the front part looked like a manta ray's face, and I thought it sounded cooler than naming it Crossbow or sth. :P

Oh and I did a step-by-step thinger, my handwriting is horrible so ask if you can't read my hieroglyphs. :D
(I accidentally crumpled that paper too when I was erasing something. Damn it's annoying! >:|

I revamped the backstory quite a bit.
It still looks sucky, but whatever. It looks maybe too clean right now.
(Sorry for the grammar errors, I wasn't really paying attention to it, I just wrote what came to my head)

I haven't scanned much pencil drawings, mainly 'cause most of them are in my school notebooks (*ahem*) and i haven't drawn decent pencil stuff for a long time.
The newest one I found from my archives was this sketchy-ish drawing of a hideous dragon (yes it's meant to be ugly). I had to darken the lines 'cause the scanner focked up the colours.
I didn't really shade that much and I used a pencil which was too sharp (it started as a doodle).
And it's like years old.
I should draw more pencil stuff, I guess. :P

By the way, I've already drawn and scanned a pic which the backstory is for, I'll just have to colour it. :D

I'm glad that you're using basic shapes, they definitely help. The paper looks better now. As for using a dull pencil, I personally don't see much of a difference, but I use a sharpened pencil so that way I feel like I have more control. Being able to shade has little to do with how sharp or dull a pencil point is. To prevent crumpling your paper, just go slowly. That'll help, but you may crumple it a little still. Nothings a guarantee.

I'd invest in a sketchbook and the will power to bring it with you everywhere. If you plan to take it to school then one around 9"X12" is good. If you intend to do more at home than in the class room I'd go up to 11"X14". 11"X14" gives you a decent size to work in so that you don't feel like you're running out of space (that's how I feel anyway). You can also work in a larger scale which allows you to add more detail. Get a good sketchbook, though; don't get one from Walmart or someplace like that. Go to your local craft store and get a decent sketchbook and a set of pencils. You don't need to break the bank, but it's easier to do things if you're working with better materials than, say, notebook paper and a yellow number 2 pencil.

You should work on your pencil drawings without inking too. The skills you'll get from shading in general will be transferrable.

Yeah, but a pencil too sharp= lines that are hard to erase. :P That's why my pencil isn't that sharp when I draw.
I'm always rushing when I erase the lines and never remember to slow down until it's too late. D:

Now you made me want to go and buy a good sketchbook, maybe I'll go and get one tomorrow on the lunch break. ;)

Oh, and here's a funky snail I drew a while ago just for fun.
Snails are cute. ^__^

I usually don't like to give compliments, but is this is pretty much awesome. I really like the handwriting and that dinosaur in the bottom corner is just about the best thing ever. ;[

If your lines are hard to erase, then you're probably pressing down too hard in the first place. It has little to do with the pencil's point. It could also have to do with, but not entirely, the lead itself. H pencils are harder and meant to be used very lightly. B pencils have a softer lead and are used more for shading. HB is in between these two, as the name implies. So, work on pencil control. If you want something to turn out the best that it can, then you need to learn to slow down and take your time. You should know, with all your crumpled papers, that rushing never pays off.

@ DatVu: Well thank you. :D I thought my handwriting is horrible.

@ Crimson: I guess I'm just too anxious to get to the colouring phase, so I rush things.
I think I'v already slowed down a bit, 'cause I didn't crumple my newest drawing. :D

Which is this.
Silent is an outlaw who takes what he needs from whoever he wants.
No one knows who or what he really is, because he hides his identity behind an eerie, white mask.
The legendary crossbow named "the Harp Ray" was stolen by him. He is blind, but by playing the Harp he can see.
(I used Photoshop to colour this one)

Well, that's all for now. :P
