This is fairly unrelated to Psypoke, but I need help...
How do you get a transparent backround for your edited sprites? Mine look ugly with the white backround...

You can't do transparency on Paint. You can with GIMp or Animation Shop 3 (I use AS3)

I tried many times but it only let's the right-clcik colour become "transparent" when layering over other pictures.

I think you have to have Animation Shop 3 or something like it to do real transparencies. Otherwise, take a screenshot of the Psypoke window (the button on the keyboard for PC's says 'Print Scr'), paste it, then eyedropper the color.

(PS: If you want, you can send me some sprites, and I'll make 'em transparent. :) )

What's eye-dropper? All that I need is for Image to lose it's white backround! If it is impossible, then how easy is it to get those programs that Kryten was talking about, and where can I find them?

The eyedropper tool is a tool that you use to pick up a color from a picture. I don't know how to explain what it looks like... at the moment.

Anyway, here. I was in need of something to do, so...

Enjoy.

You CAN do transparency in MS Paint, actually. I can't remember the specifics because it's been so long, but it has to do with the "Draw Opaque" setting, and I think it might have to be saved as a GIF. You should be able to find something on Google.

Otherwise, The GIMP is always free.

Er, transparencry works on Photoshop. Are you doing the right thing? You should be using the background eraser, not the other eraser tools.

If you are saving it as PNG, then in Internet Explorer it won't turn out transparent. That's why everyone who reads this should download and use FireFox NOW.

Anyway, sorry GQ, I've never used GIMP, so I can't help you here. Hope you solve your problem soon.

... you erase the background, and/or anything else you don't want in the image. The result is a transparency.

More specifiaclly, how do I make GIMP recognise what the backround is? Sorry if I sound like a n00b, but I know about as much about computing as George Bush knows about particle theory.

Don't feel bad, GQ. I'm a n00b with graphics too. This is what I do:

1.) Go to new and make it 70x70 (or however big your sprite is) and make sure its transparent
2.) Go to file, open as layer and open the sprite
3.) Make it 800 times larger and delete the background by pixels with the erase thing

There is probably an easier way to do it, but I fail at graphics.

Okay, so I've worked out how to copy without a backround. Now, using the complicated GIMP setup, how do I do all the Microsoft Paint colour changing thingies?

Maybe you should edit the pic/do whatever before it's in GIMP. That's what I do, but it's with PhotoStudio/AS3.

Post a copy of the image here and describe what you want to do with it. All of your brushes can be found in the main GIMP panel, and most of the advanced controls are in the window for the image itself in the menu bar and/or the right click menu.

Yeah, GIMP's interface is a royal pain, but I can live with it since it's free.

Right, I've worked out colour picker and colour changer. Now, how do I change the colours in the Image to different ones? It explains the basics in the Cave of Dragonflies's spriting guide, but that's for MS paint, it think. That's all I need to know, and then my sprites will be near-perfect...

Well, you could use Tools -> Colors -> Hue/Saturization to change everything equally. Otherwise, go with fuzzy select (Z) to select individual colors and then paint (P) them a new one.

OK. What is really annoying me is that whenever I do what you're suggesting, the colour always changes to either:

Grey

or

Olive.

WHY THE FRIGGIN' HELL AIN'T IT CHANGING TO THE COLOUR THAT I HAVE AS MY FOREGROUND COLOUR?!?

Is there an easy way of explaining it? You know, like a step-by-step? The stupid GIMP doesn't have a help program.

If it is a GIF, it's probably saved in a limited number of colors. Try right clicking and going to Image -> Mode and selecting RGB. This will give you a full color image. If the RGB option is grayed out, you may have to create a new image. Save your work as an XCF until you're finished, then export to a rich file type like PNG, or JPEG if you need to conserv on filesize. PNG is best however.

Hell!!! I've freakin' done it!!! goldenquagsire's bargain basement is back in buisness, baby! Oh, and one more problem. How do you unselect a colour, like when you click 'select region by colour', you change the colour and then you need to unselect the region that you just clicked? Serious, this last problem and I will be ready to re-colour!!! BTW, anyone who answers this last question will get a free re-colour of your choice!!! I'm not joking!

Ctrl+Shift+A is unselect all
P is paintbrush
S is smudge
O is color picker
Z is magic want
A is airbrush
R is rectangle select
F is free select
L is gradient (don't ask me why)
Shift+O is select by color
Shift+B is bucket filll
Shift+E is eraser

Other standard keyboard shortcuts (ctrl+z,x,c,v,y,a,s, etc.) still apply too.
