LET'S BEGIN The B-52's, a crazy, new wave/alternative rock band from the eighties, started off their career with this crazy self-titled dance party album. They never thought they would go big, but their album ended up being voted the 152nd greatest album of all time by Rolling Stone. Although not the most popular band, they certainly left a mark on the eighties and alternative music with this CD. Planet Claire: The album begins with a song remniscent of sci-fi, Planet Claire. It begins with an insrumental introduction with typical space and machine sounds flowing over Ricky Wilson playing the guitar and Keith Strickland on drums. After about two minutes of an intro, the monotone "singing" of Fred Scheider begins. Fred muses on about "Planet Cliare" and the girl the planet, and ends up saying some VERY strange things. Although it only has aroubd two minutes of singing, you can start getting the feel of the band with this song. It's a good song, but it isn't as great as the ones where Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson actually sing. The intro is also REALLY long and sorta gets boring, but not too bad. It gets an 8/10. 52 Girls: The next song starts right off with Kate and Cindy singing about the 52 girls that are coming to some intergalactic party or something. This is the first song you hear Kate and Cindy, and it's not their best perfomance. The harmonies are nice, and their voices blend well, but it isn't close to being their best performance. othing really special about the guitar or drums in this, either. It gets a 8/10. Dance This Mess Around: This song is where the album really starts. The song starts off slow with Kate singing with the guitar and drum. About a minute into the sonf, Kate begins to scream "WHY WON'T YOU DANCE WITH ME?" and then goes on for a while in a more screamy tone, and this is where you can begin to hear the power in her voice. Fred then starts in, and the tempo picks up. Fred and Kate begin a duet about the dances they do at their party. The song continues with both the female singers command the listeners to "shake" for about 30 more seconds. Then more talking about the dances they do... Then an onslaught begins when the three singers just scream "YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH" when kate asks if they're going to "dance this mess around." It's a cool song, you begin to hear the sound the band is known for in this song. The "YEAH YEAH YEAH" part is super cool, but maybe that's just me. An awesome, but not the best song. It gets a 9/10. Rock Lobster: The. Coolest. Song. Ever. I'm sure you guys have heard it somewhere, BECAUSE IT ROCKS. A seven minute long ode to rocks and beach celebrations and sea critters, this song is awesome. It tells the story of a rock, well it wasn't a rock... WAS A ROCK LOBSTER. Yeah, frankly there are no words to describe this song, except for some awesome guitar and crazy sea animals. BEST. SONG. ON. THE. WHOLE. ALBUM. Even if you don't like the other songs, just get this one. It is awesome! It gets a 11/10 and a large fruitcake of AWESOME. Lava: The NEXT best song on the album. Everyone is singing about volcanos and explosions, and it all just flows together really nicely. It doesn't sound that great the first time, but it grows on you. It flows really nicely, and the harmoies of Kate and Cindy really work well with the spoken lyrics from Fred in this song. I guess there's some undertone of love in the lyrics, but the song is just so cool, we won't focus on that. It gets a 10/10. There's a Moon in the Sky: The B-52's sure like singing about outer space. It sounds really interesting while you're listening, but there isn't anything all that memorable about it. The trio of vocalists list the planets, and it all sounds cool, just not memorable/all that exciting. YOu start to hear the crazy things the girls can do with their voices in this song, they have a really good natural hormony. It gets a 8/10. Hero Worship: This song has a really great beat/force that nicely goes with the vocals and guitar. I really like this song, I don't really know why. It's super powerful, and like forces you to listen to it. It's probably the most rock-esque song you'll get on the album, only one girl sing this song, but I can't thell which, but you can hear the talent she has for singing. I really like this one, so it gets a 9/10. 6060-842: A song about a phone-number. My third favorite song on this album. The way they sing those digits, IT'S TRULY MAGICAL. Not really, but it sounds REALLY cool. In one of the verses it sounds like a chicken is bawking all around the place. It has cool sections here the singers are just speaking/sing to bongos and random keyboard chords. Really cool. Then it goes on to repeat "YOUR NUMBER'S BEEN DISCONNECTED" a dew times, and has random bits of telephone conversatoins cut in. Yeah, awesome song. It gets 10/10. Downtown: For the final song you get a cover of Petula Clark's Downtown, the fourth coolest song on the album. The constant city noise in the background really adds character to this song. It's just a fun, springy, short song that really shows the style of this awesome. The vocalist sound really good in this, so it gets ANOTHER 10/10. Yeah, I know I suck at writing reveiws, but I really thnk you should try these guys out. This CD started their crazy taker on music, and it's probably the best for actual "music" with guitar and drums, because some of their newer albums are more voice oriented, and boy, do they have amazing voices. The CD flows together really nicely, and is great for dancing to or just listening to. Yeah, let's get the total rating... IT GETS A 10/10, yeah I know I individually rated these songs, but as an album it rocks. I might do a review of Cosmic Thing next, their next album that spawned real hits, depending on how you guys like these guys. I only know Love Shack by them. That's a very infectious track. The man's vocals sound a lot like John Lydon. |

The only song I know by them is also Love Shack. The first time I heard it was on holiday in Italy. I have to admit its not really the genre I listen to but the song is catchy. |

Hay Kirke. (ker-kie?) Anyway, I find it crazy weird that you like this album so much it's one of my favs and it drives me crazy when people only enjoy B's cause of love-shack (even though it's a great tune). I have Their debut, Wild planet which is another master piece in it's self just listen to give me back my man and privet idaho, i have mesopotamia Which is really an incomplete Ep, i have WHAMMY which is amazing with tracks like butterbeam, songs for a new genoration and trism its a blast, I also have bouncing off the saturlights it's a much deaper album then any previes ones which maybe cause thier guitarist Ricky Wilson died half way through recording VERy sad, it has summer of love and it is a wounderful album, I also have cosmic thing which is oh so great, tracks like dead beat club and dry county and love shack give it the feel of a long summer holyday with not much tto do. I still need Good stuf I've been collecting since i was 15 and i'm still a teenager so there is much time ahead for me to complete my collection. I am a music lover first then a poke fan second or maybe alot of other stuff second but it's somewhere. I've also been ranting for far to long to strangers. bye |

Glad to see that's there is another die-hard b-52's fan out there. I do agree that this is a masterpiece, easily in my top albums ever. This is my favorite general album, but my favorite tracks are housed by their other albums! They're such a great band. I saw them live. They rocked. and it's KIR-KAY.
