Graphics have nothing to do with how good a game is. Graphics, the least important part of a game. Maybe it's the Every Day gamer causing the downfall of Games? Games havnt been too stellar these days, Becuase because it seems to many people care about graphics too much.

Something tells me you have never a.) Emulated ANYTHING on your computer, or b.) You must have a terrible computer if the graphics are "rubbish", because Sonic The Hedgehog 2 plays just as fine for me on my computer as it does/did on my Sega Genesis.

Yeah, now that I've actually USED emulators, I realized that aren't all so bad. Yes, they are illegal, but so are lost of other things, but that's not the point. They help people more than they harm them, so they are like, good and stuff.

1. So what. Pirate DVDs are illegal and no-one gives a monkey's if you've bought one.

2. So are Pokemon Red and Blue's. Not forgetting the old Legend of Zeldas. Oh, and Super Metroid. Wahey, let's add the first Sonic games to the list. Think about it, graphics are not the most important point to a game. That's what movies are for. Games are for having fun on.

I haven't used emulators, so I can't really have an unbiased opinion, but I agree with everyone who says that it's better to use one than to spend hundreds of pounds on a second-hand console and ancient games.
Oh yeah, and unlimitedgamer, thanks for using one of my sigs without asking.
BTW, don't the forum rules ban the discussion of ROMs and Emulators?

Seeing as sN0wBaLL and Krisp are on here, it can't be that illegal...

The graphics are just the same. However, it is commonpractice to extend the screen, thus distorting stuff.

For those who believe it rips off a company, They make PLENTY of money on the ******** who don't know/use/care about emulators.

Wait, hold up, isn't it illegal to talk about emulators and cheating devices (ie emulators, gameshark and AR) on this site?

Many believe that emulators themselves are cheats, because you can save where you're not supposed to (like in the middle of a pokemon battle, or the battle fronteir).

I use emulators for a few reasons.
a.) the cost of batterries and games.
b.) the screen is so small. I have Strabismus (aka the wandering eye)
c.) Easy link
d.) Speed Up option.
e.) Alternative contols. If I wanted to, I could very easily plug in a joystick.
f.) the games die out. Its happening in mass numbers now ith the GSC and some RuSa games. There are internal batteriess to maintain the clock function, and if the batteries die out completely, entire saved games go out. AND THAT SUCKS!!!

Thank you, someone who speaks the truth for once!

Anyway, I'm not against Emulators/ROMs, especially since I might get one soon, but I have three questions:

My friend told me that his 13-year-old cousin had a copy of some emulator, and a video games company tracked him down and sued him. I am unsure of the validity of my friend's story, but I want to be sure.

What happens if your IP is contacted? It said somewhere in this topic about that.

Is there a law that I could quote in my defence if I had an emulator? Or is that not allowed to be said on Psypoke? Bear in mind that I'd probably get Pokemon Yellow, which I already own for the GB.

Thank you for your time.

First of all...

Its still illegal. Just because you own a game doesn't mean you're allowed to copy it (refer to the manual.)

lol

Since when does Nintendo, Sony, etc. go out of their way to track down people on the internet? He was definitely lying. Its something like the RIAA that tracks people down, not the company or artist themselves.

Emulators are not illegal...unless you've downloaded the BIOS (which is illegal, but GBA emus don't need them.)

I talked to TK about it, and as long as nobody requests or posts links to ROMs, its fine. Otherwise, we'll have to get out the banhammer

Who are the RIAA? So that means that you CAN get in legal trouble?

That conflicts with what you have already said.

This is way confusing.

Lemme clarify something for everyone who says emulators are illegal...first of all, they aren't. Downloading VBA is not going to get you in legal trouble (assuming you'd ever get caught  ) Now. When you download Pokemon Yellow Version, you have commited a crime. If you were tracked down, you would be in trouble for the ROM, not the emulator.

RIAA is Recording Industry Association (of) America. They are the ones who track people down for downloading music (by the way, I just used them as an example, I don't know who would bust you for downloading ROMs in or outside America.)

Hopefully this clears it up.

But you're just making it more confusing!

Downloading VBA is not a crime, but then how come downloading Pokemon Yellow would get you in legal trouble? Unless I've missed a point somewhere...

For those of you who can't figure out WHY, think about why its illegal to download ROMs, music, etc. Its copyrighted. VBA is freeware made by whoknowswho.

If I sound like a n00b, then ignore me, but I swear that the VBA is simply the program that you save the ROMs to? In which case, the only way to do it legally is to have an empty collection of games. Which would be real fun!

...Wtf? You don't save the ROMs to the emulator, you play them on it.

I've never heard of anybody being prosecuted for owning ROMs. That story is most likely anti-ROM propaganda spread by some "Holier-Than-Thou" dip****.

Still, if they need pictures, they could use an emulator, but still. They could just email or drop a line to the company and ask. Or use a webcam, then edit out what they don't like.

The company is NOT just going to give you their sprites. Especially if you email them.

How many emails do you reckon Nintendo gets a day from fans who want stuff? Hundreds, maybe thousands.

Use a webcam and edit? *faints at the idea* If you're gonna pull my leg, try harder next time.

BTW, VBA ROCKS!!!11!!1!!

So does the Pokemon Trading Card Game!!!11!!1!!
Rom version!!!11!!1!!

Isnt it against the rules to post links to emulators?

But isnt it OK to PM them?

If so PM me and I will tell you where I got mine. Good source.

There was a pretty decent discussion going about them, and I'd hate to have to delete or lock this thread because of that. So let this be a fair warning - DO NOT REQUEST ROMs/EMULATORS, OR POST LINKS TO THEM.

Indeed. The idea of this thread, that I made, is to get your thoughts on emulators, not how to get them. That's something you should do elsewhere.

My opinion on emulators has changed since I actually tried one. Hey, there are just some games I can't get in real life and need to play as a ROM. 8-)

Well, I tried one a few days ago, and it was okay, except that I had to trawl through about a thousand different ROMs before I found a decent translation. I got rid of it, and I later found out from my parents that they wouldn't allow it. Oh well. I'll just have to wait a little longer... heheh.

emulators are evil,

i did use it before but nah not anymore.

the reason why i think they are evil because,

a lot of people don't know about roms so they just buy gba games
