Post subject:  Movie Review: Serenity

CAUTION!!! I will include spoilers in this movie review, so heads up!

This is my first movie review, maybe I'll do more. Tell me if you think it's ok, or if you think it's terrible, that works too. Ya'll ready for this? *Que music* Where to begin?... I have an idea!! The beginning!!!!!

I'm not entirely sure that alot of people really know too much about this movie, or at least it seems that way since no one in my area has even heard of it's existence. I believe this to be somewhat unfortunate, since, from a non-Browncoats (I'll explain later) point of view, it's a relatively good movie. First of all, however, some backround knowledge is neccesary.

Firefly aired in the fall of 2002 on Fox, given to us by the genious mind of Joss Whedon (also the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel). Being classified as something like a sci-fi western, it provided viewers with a new and rather bizzare outlook on the future. Those that watched, being a relatively small ammount, either loved it (and became what are known as "Browncoats"), or despised it. Unfortunately, the later group prevailed, and the series was cancelled... immediately. A total of 14 episodes were made, a mere 11 of them actually being aired on television. Many people blamed Fox for this lack of success, since the show was placed in one of the worst spots, and the episodes weren't even played in order. The episode that would have been the series premiere ended up being used as the series finale. Despicable, in my opinion. However, the fans, being as dedicated as they are, fought on. Hundreds of websites in honor of the show rose up, in an effort to bring Firefly back. Joss Whedon also kept on fighting to continue the Story of Firefly, until, finally, Universal agreed to make Serenity. And there was much rejoicing.

From the point of view of someone who is completely new to the world of Firefly, the movie seems fairly good. Full of action, with an interesting plot and the occasional, well-placed funny, Serenity certainly seems like a fun night at the movie theatre. The casting included the nine main characters from the television show, as well as the recruitment of a few new faces, and, overall, was done magnificently. Many of the characters were basically unknown until the show, but are, without a doubt, the perfect choice for every role.

Joss Whedon created a script that eased people into the whole theme of the film: it wasn't created for those who already understood and cherished the series. However, it still fit with the basic feel that was felt in the television show that brought the movie into existence. The dialogue, has the same, slightly strange mix of speeches, and, yes, they still swear in Chinese. It's fascinating, the way that conversations between characters can make you say, "Wow, I never really thought about it that way".

Also, the film contains some great special effects and action that will put you at the edge of your seat. Like westerns? Like sci-fi? This contains the feeling of both, while still maintaining an understandable plot.

Many Browncoats, however, feel differently. It is thought that Joss strayed too far from what made them fans, by including too much action. In addition, Malcom Reynolds (played by Nathan Fillion), being the main character, seemed far too dark. Firefly gave us a main character that was truly likable, not so angry and brooding. In addition, fans were shocked that their beloved Joss would kill off one of the characters that was undoubtedly the biggest addition to the lighter, friendlier side of the crew.

It is, however, understandable that it would be necessary to attract the interest of the general public with this movie, in order to gain the money and support to create other films that are more Firefly-ish.

All in all, this film is one that I would suggest to anyone. Exciting, funny, and well-made, Serenity is one movie that has the chance to join your list of favorites. 7/10

The contract that each actor signed contained the opportunity of sequels, so keep your eyes open.

Doesnt anyone want to tell me what they thought of this?

I've yet to see it but it looks great. Bartimeus showed me the first episode of Firefly at his house and it was awesome. We are trying to rent it at Showbiz, but they don't have it in stock for us to rent.

I can't wait though. :)

Yo, TS, just talk to me, I've got two copies of it. Funny story, actually. My brother got it as a Christmas gift for my mom, but, unbeknownst to him, Santa gave it to us as well. So we just figured that my bro could bring the extra copy to college.

BTW: Everyone who sees the movie has to promise me that they will purchase or rent the boxed set of the entire Television series. You have to promise!! I bet you will like them more then the movie!
