As you may or may not know, GameFAQs has been holding a contest for the best game of the 00's. Whenever there's a new GameFAQs contest I like to lurk on the contest's message board and see how hardcore gamers' opinions compare to the masses. One shining example is the inevitable showdown between Melee, which is generally preferred on GameFAQs, and Brawl, which is generally preferred by the masses. And, since Wind Waker is in a match on GameFAQs as I type this, there's also a lot of topics about how "[Zelda game X] sucks, [Zelda game Y] is the best one!" too.

The massive debates on the Internet over whether which is the best Smash, Zelda, Mario, Final Fantasy and whatever else made me think it would be interesting to see what you guys thought were the best games of these series and any others (with at least two games, preferably three) that you feel like writing about.

My list of completely arbitrary video games series pulled from the top of my head:
Super Mario Brothers: Super Mario 64 (N64)
Super Mario Kart: Mario Kart 64 (N64)
Super Mario RPG: Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES)
Pokemon: Pokemon Crystal (GBC)
Metroid: Super Metroid (SNES)
Star Fox: Star Fox 64 (N64 - lol as if there are any other choices here)
Kirby: Kirby Super Star (SNES)
Super Smash Bros: Super Smash Bros. Melee (Gamecube)

Final Fantasy: Final Fantasy VI (SNES)
Sonic the Hedgehog: Sonic 3 (Genesis)
Street Fighter: Super Street Fighter IV (360)
Mortal Kombat: Mortal Kombat II (Arcade/Genesis/SNES)
Halo: Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox)
Grand Theft Auto: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PS2/Xbox)
Streets of Rage: Streets of Rage 3 (Genesis)

What do you guys like the most from these series - or other ones that I didn't mention (because I don't play Zelda games)?

AHHHH!!!! TMI!!!!!

Anyway, I thought I'd drop in to mention that I think that the best Kirby game will be the hardest to determine out of any sries I've played. It comes down to Super Star vs. Crystal Shards, and both games were epic win.

Wow... my post will be super tiny compared to everyone else's:
Pokemon: Sapphire (GBA)
Spyro: Season of Ice and Season of Fire (couldn't choose) (GBA and GBA)
Super Smash Bros: I prefer Brawl over Melee only because of simply this: More choices and better graphics. Yep. More stuff and more options and better graphics. (Wii)
Kirby: Only ever played Squeak Squad, Super Star Ultra, and Epic Yarn. I choose super star ultra. (DS)
Tak: The Great Juju challenge (GameCube)
Power Rangers: Ninja Storm (GBA)
Legend of Zelda: Four Swords (GameCube)

When you say obscure, are you referring to any on your list? Because I don't see any obscure games on your list. I see some underrated/not highly acclaimed games from the series you mentioned, but all of those are pretty recognizable. Even Mother 3, which is technically Japan only, is well known throughout the rest of the world thanks to the fan translation and starmen.net.

You mean, how mario games are bad?

Well...

Noobs:
"Mario sucks!"
"It's too kiddy!"
"There's no blood!"
"It isn't an FPS!"
"Go Halo! DUH."

Real people: Well, the mario games have reached something many developers fail to achieve: level design. Whether it's bouncing on spikes in a shoe, carrying a key while being ambushed by a mask, falling a pit of ghosts, wall jumping waterfalls, or swimming in floating orbs of water, Mario games always keep you surprised. for me, replay value is an issue in the 2d ones, and combat isn't very satisfying in the 3d ones. That's my 2 cents.

Well no, I love Mario games. But as good as each one is, they just don't get the criticisms that most games do. While there isn't much to criticize with a platformer like Mario, its flaws are still there and aren't picked up on. Tha's jus' what we sayin' over here.

Mario Sunshine got a lot of criticism back in the day, especially when compared against Super Mario 64, because it didn't have enough courses, too many Shines were from Blue Coins, there were too many annoying "Secret of ___" platformer puzzles, etc., etc., etc.

Super Mario Bros. 2 USA also got a pretty lukewarm reception for being such a departure from the original. Of course we know why that's the case NOW, but back then people thought that was the actual sequel to SMB1.

I actually had never heard that about SMS. Interesting. Of course, I wasn't around to know about SMB2's release baws. Interesting. But my point still stands that other games that are just as good but not quite as classic don't get the same treatment. There's somewhat of a double standard.

Megaman -- Megaman 3 (<3333333)
Sonic -- Sonic 3 & Knuckles (The highest point in Sonic's history)
Resident Evil -- RE2 (Why was this never remade?)
Silent Hill -- SH3 (This should've been the end of the series)
Final Fantasy -- FF8 (The junction system is my BFF)
