house of flying daggers? i saw that movie when it released in china but i didnt really like it. it was just like "HERO", except with a much more confusing plot and simpler special fx.

Same here but I also liked the LOTR trilogy. The special effects are like :shock: woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I love Super Size Me...the one and only oh yea...and the new movie that just opened today "The Aristocrats," which avertised the dirtiest joke of all time and various' comedians view. It was the dirtiest joke...you must see it but no one unde rthe age of 14...it is very Vulgar but so funny!

Star Wars episode IV, a new hope.

That was an amazing breakthrough in film producing at the time, if not the biggest. Best of all, the whole Star Wars concept is quite well thought of.

I would say that Nido has a pretty damn good movie list lol. Some of them I don't like though. Among the top favourites:

Orignal Star Wars Series
Usual Supsects
Shawshank Redemption
The Manchurian Candidate (NOT THE NEW ONE)
Saving Private Ryan
...Oh jeeze I'm drawing a blank.

I don't understand the obsession with Lord of the Rings though. I can agree that they are fun to watch. As far as the movie went, I didn't connect with the relationships between the characters, and I didn't feel like there was much more to it than a great adventure story. No twist ending, no thick plot other than point A to B to save the world, no artistic interpritations, or good morals. There wasn't really much that I could connect to to cause me to say, "Wow, that was a great movie." I thought it was nothing more than visually exciting.

I understand it was a classic book, full of spectacular descriptive detail and you can't change much of that for the movie. However, what made the book so captivating was the imagination put forth by the writer and the world he had created; you could create spectacular images in your head from this creation and lose yourself. Only with this and a splash of romance and much action was this book successful. By putting this book to movie, you lose all that luster. The movie couldn't take an exciting direction, because the screenplay was bounded by the limitions of the book. It wasn't artistic, original, or inspiring, it was only fun. It shows greatness from the book, not greatness as a movie.

So why is a movie like this harolded as one of the greatest?

Because it redefined the accepted limitations of film genre. It took a very old and established genre and turned it inside out, transformed it into something nobody had even imagined could happen before. It also changed some filmmaking techniques, but I'll get to that soon.

Redefining a genre. Fantasy was a genre with roots way back in 1920s German expressionism, with films like Nosferatu, Faust, etc. When people think 'Fantasy', at least before Lord of the Rings, they would think of movies like The Wizard of Oz, It's A Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, King Kong, and more recently, The Princess Bride, Disney films, The Baron Munchhausen, Miazaki films. Who would have thought that Fantasy could be a firm, confident genre with great acting, a complex screenplay, and true, pure emotion and drama? Nobody did, until Peter Jackson. Lord of the Rings turned the Fantasy genre into a full-fledged, dramatic and totally serious genre, which is something it never was before. I can't comment on the fact that you didn't connect to the characters or feel the drama. All I can say is that I did, and that you're missing out.
It is also safe to say that never before has anybody seen films so technically perfect, in every aspect. It's a trilogy of movies made with such love and care and utter perfection of craft that you can't wonder just how Peter Jackson managed to do it. The Lord of the Rings movies are the first movies that I can safely say don't let the special effects take over the story. On the contrary - you watch the films and realise that PJ uses CGI only when he absolutely HAS to. the CGI is merely a supporting element. Who could have ever thought that a special effects film could be made like this, with the special effects second to the acting, the characters, the story, the drama? As I mentioned earlier, Lord of the Rings also already started a few trends in filmmaking, namely in CGI, but also in cinematography. Epic movies after LOTR (Troy, Kingdom of Heaven to name a few) utilize the "sweeping" shots over vast armies and landscapes that LOTR used so well. Before LOTR, you wouldn't see shots like these in epics.
I could go on, but I think I've gotten the basics of my point across. You don't have to like LOTR (although it's unfortunate that you do because, in my opinion, you're missing out on something truly spectacular, and on the best filmmaking of the 2000s so far), but you should at least acknowledge the fact that they are hugely, immensely important and influential films, an unprecedented achivement in filmmaking, and that they will most definitely leave their mark on filmmaking history.

I do thank you for the compliment you gave my favourite movies list, though :P

Oh, I never said I didn't like it. I enjoyed watching it very much, but I just feel some elements were missing to make it truely spectacular. I can see your point with the care and stive for perfection in the making of this film. Some of the things read about the creation of costumes or the locations used to shoot the film is something I can truely appreciate. Also, I can partially agree with the CGI comment as well.

I think these are points which made the prequals to Star Wars such failures. George Lucas was more interested in showing what CGI's he could produce rather than what looked more realistic. I would like to have seen a lot more filming on locations and set creation rather than CGing locations and sets, more costumes and puppets rather than CGing caracters, more spaceship models rather than CGing everything in space, and more robotics (or something compairable considering expense) rather than CGing droids. George Lucas did the best he could with the technology he had to create the original three, but with the prequals, he did the worst he could with the best technology available. I found myself thinking "This looks more fake than the originals!" as opposed to "Wow."

I can whole-heartedly agree that the filmmaking was unprecedented, but I found the story itself lacking certain elements, which would create the connections I missed between the characters, or understanding the plot to be more complex than how I view it now. This is beyond the filmmakers' control in this case, as it is not their story.

PS Have you seen the old version of The Manchurian Candidate? If not, I highly suggest you do. I noticed it didn't make your list.

Also, I saw Dr. Strangelove on your list as well. I rented the movie, but for some reason or another, I only saw the first 15 minutes. I turned it off and took it back before finishing it (late fees are scary). How would you rate the movie? I'm debating on whether or not I should rent it again just to see it.

I'd definitely say it's Kubrick's second best film, after Space Odyssey. Firstly, it's extremely well-made for the time, and shows perfect control of craft on Kubrick's side. Secondly, it's OUTRAGEOUSLY funny. Peter Sellers, who plays three characters, totally loses control and delivers an absolutely hilarious performance, from all his characters. And thirdly... it's brilliantly clever. It's a very subversive satire on nuclear war and on the American presidency and leadership. And when you keep in mind that it came out during the peak of the Cold War while watching it, you realize just how brilliant a satire it is.
