Post subject:  Green Day Loosing Punk?

Green Day used to be my favorite band but when I got my iPod I had more of a variety to listen to. So, Green Day calls themselves a "punk" band, but ever since their album "Warning" they seem to be slightly moving away from that kind of music. What do you guys think?

I used to like them too (before I discovered the Ramones, which led me into other things), but lately they've been on my nerves. American Idiot, the very album that got me into them (I used to be a sad, sad person), in my opinion is their worst CD. I mean, they always have been kind of poppy, but I just haven't liked their sound lately. Warning did have some good songs (Not many, but only 10 tracks), but compared to Nimrod, it was terrible. Even the members themselves have been bugging me, but mainly Billie Joe. Straitening his hair, putting on eyeliner, always acting like the voice of punk, his own clothing line, it all seems fake to me. He's acting like a poser, not a punk. Tre should cut the make-up thing as well. Mike hasn't been bugging me too much, but he really is trying to look like Paul Simmonon from the Clash. Maybe their next CD will change our minds. I don't know. I think I'm over them at this point...

I think that Green Day is moving away from music all together, but that's my opinion.

They lost popularity for me after their last album.

Time for a semi-rant/post:

It's one of my guilty secrets that I like Green Day. They were pretty much the first non-pop band I ever listened to and liked, and I still enjoy some of their songs. If it wasn't for them, I'd still be listening to far worse crap.

The whole debate on whether they're punk is stupid if you ask me. I don't really care what genre they are, even the one that they claim to be. Heck, I don't even know what the proper term is for half the music I listen to. Does it even matter? Just because you stick a label on something, doesn't instantly change the quality of it, or how much you enjoy it.

As for the whole "selling out" and "commercialisation" complaints that I hear from a lot of people... well, there's not a lot I can say to change your mind, but I personally think it's a bit silly to get worked up about that sort of thing. People need money and profits, you can never change that.

I'm okay if you don't like them or whatever; I get the feeling I'll probably grow out of their music eventually as well. What really pisses me off though is that it seems that if you like Green Day's music, you instantly become some ditzy-headed moron, regardless of your other music tastes. I like Green Day. I also happen to like Iron Maiden, Muse and Guns N Roses. Hell, I even listen to freaking Nobuo Uematsu. I don't think I'm "rebelling" or any of that nonsense by listening to any of it.

Edit: For the record, I don't think they're punk. More pop/slightly rock-ish.

They're very first albums were punk/emo ((I hate tossing that phrase around, but it's true)) and their latest album was anti-emo. Why they made the shift, I have no idea. Personally, I prefer their newest album.

Green Day used to be one my favorite bands. Their new stuff is... well... bad. Old albums like Dookie and International Superhits were great, with songs like When I Come Around and Basket Case.

They used to be a little punk but haven't been for near a decade. Real punk is like Black Flag, Ramones, Sex Pistols, Alien Sex Fiend, Subhumans, stuff like that.

Well since all i listen to is punk id like to say this:

GreenDay,may be a good band to some exetent of peoples standards, however they havent played punk music before, because well they arent punks, not to say this is bad,but its a watered down version of my music and i dont enjoy it.
If a metal band covered say Word Attack by the Adolescents it wouldnt be a punk song when they played it,just an imitation.
Punk isnt even about how you act or sound its just something that IS and either you like it or you dont,i love it,i breathe it live it as many others but alot of people dont get it.

If you wanna know some great punk bands PM me and ill give you some band names, always happy to share the music :D.
