Review: Paul McCartney - "Chaos and Creation . . ."

The former Beatle, Sir James Paul McCartney, has put together a stunning effort on this latest solo effort, "Chaos and Creation in the Backyard." The sound can be generally described as a return to the piano-driven pop rock that has defined Macca's illustrious solo career, after a bit of exploration into the realm of some different styles in the nineties. Glad to have you back, Paul.
COMPOSITION: Like I said, most of the songs are piano-driven pop rock songs. "Chaos and Creation" opens with a A-major scale played down and back up again on the up-tempo, good-mood "Fine Line," which is a superb tune and opens the album quite nicely. Next, the sarcastic "How Kind of You," is a drawn-out piano/acoustic guitar pairing that reminds us where modern favorites like Coldplay got their inspiration. The third and possibly most anticipated track is "Jenny Wren," which features Paul on acoustic guitar, a la Beatle favorite "Blackbird." Other standout tracks include the moody "At the Mercy," the lighthearted "Friends to Go," piano-and-strings "English Tea," and "Riding to Vanity Fair," which gets its distinctive "ting-ting" lead section from two wine glasses being tapped together. Ones to skip are "Follow Me" and "This Never Happened Before," but be sure to stick around after "Anyway" to catch the instrumental hidden track, the guitar licks and soaring piano lead are a real treat. It sounds at times like at any moment McCartney could break into a cover of U2's "Bullet the Blue Sky," but sadly, it never comes  .
McCartney, who plays all the instruments heard on "Choas" himself, uses the electric guitar as a flavoring instrument, adding small licks here and there to add feeling, with the piano and bass doing most of the really cool stuff.
LYRICS/VOCALS: Paul's voice still sounds quite strong on this recording, obviously there are no "Helter Skelter"-style vocals on this pop album . The lyrics are generally very tongue in cheek and quite catchy, and my favorites are his sarcasm on "How Kind of You," his narration of a warm Sunday morning out on the balcony in "English Tea," and his brooding pissiness in "Riding to Vanity Fair."
OVERALL: Paul McCartney is nothing short of a legend, and "Chaos and Creation in the Backyard" reinforces it once again. A very strong effort with only a few slipups, I would recommend "Chaos" to any Beatle fan, and anyone who enjoys catchy, well-written piano pop songs.
RATING: 8.2/10.

I'm a huge beatles, especially paul, especially wings fan but I didn't really like Chaos. Fine Line was a pretty good song and English Tea I found incredibly sad but the rest I just could not dig. I like how paul does everything though, like on McCartney but I wish it had more of McCartney's homade feel/charm in it. A lot of the songs (most notably Fine Line) have a feeling like I've heard them before, I don't think Macca did or would ever rip off a tune but I just really don't like that feelling, especially on a new album.
I'd give it 5.5 being a bit generous
