The Wiki wrote:
Punk rock is an anti-establishment rock music movement with origins in the United States and United Kingdom around 1974-1975, exemplified by bands such as the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, The Damned, and The Clash.

The term punk is used to describe the associated subculture, involving youthful aggression, specific clothing styles, ideologies, and a DIY (do it yourself) attitude. Historically the cities of London, Manchester, New York City, Detroit, Washington DC, Los Angeles and the Bay Area have been punk's breeding grounds.

In 1976, the English punk fanzine Sideburns included drawings (later reproduced in Sniffin' Glue) of three chords, captioned: "This is a chord, this is another, this is a third. Now form a band". Typical punk instrumentation includes a drum kit, one or two electric guitars, an electric bass and vocals. Drums typically sound heavy and dry, and often have a minimal set-up

It's now impossible to explain. Just listen to bands like the New York Dolls, MC5, Stooges, Ramones, Sex Pistols, Clash, Stranglers, Damned, Buzzcocks andSham 69. Then decide for yourself.

You should stop worrying about how to label or classify music types and decide why you like what you like.

Sure, listening to bands like New York Dolls, Ramones, Clash... It's punk. But it's not punk NOW.

Punk now is like, NOFX, Anti-Flag, Rise Against(<3), No Use for a Name (<3), Against Me!, No Trigger, The Lawrence Arms, Black Flag, Sick of it All...

Pop punk is like, Green Day, Blink-182...

Angels and Airwaves suck and aren't punk at all.

There's different types of punk, too. If you listen to NOFX and then Rise Against... They really sound nothing alike. You'll have to find your own style. If you want to get into punk rock, I suggest buying a compilation CD with a lot of bands on it and pick a few you like.

Rise Against isn't emo. They're just awesome. I'd consider Green Day punk, I don't even care.

Just... Don't listen to ska.
