I guess GF thought that it'd be a good idea, thinking that this pokemon could be the most versatile of all pokes and would work in battle.
Unfortunately, it turns out it doesn't, actually.

I was replying to a post somewhere on this site that was about Ditto when a question struck upon my brain (ouch...thinking hurts!). I read in another thread that Ditto was made for breeding, which seems reasonable since that's all I ever use him for. But, Ditto was in the first 151. That was before the breeding concept was devised, so what was the original purpose of Ditto? He kind of falls in the category of novelty PkMn, ones that are cool to own but aren't very useful in battle either due to depressingly pitiful stats (Like Smeargle) or limited movesets (like Castform), but I just get the strange feeling that Ditto was originally meant to be more than just a novelty PkMn. Maybe Gamefreak already had a brainstorm about the whole breeding thing when they made Ditto (I doubt that, though) or maybe I'm wrong and this is all just a wild hunch. Anyone have any ideas about this? |

I really hate when people gripe about Unown, Ditto, and Magikarp... Not all pokemon have a battling purpose. There are probably a million threads like this, but I'm too lazy to look for one. NOT ALL POKEMON ARE MEANT FOR BATTLING. Ditto had a (small) part in the anime, and is not nessesarly meant for battling. Stop complaining, if you think Ditto is worthless crap, don't use it. |

KRISP WROTE: "Stop complaining, if you think Ditto is worthless crap, don't use it." Way ahead of you. I've been playing PkMn games since they came out, and I've used Ditto one time. That was the first, and last time I ever put it in my party... (No disrespect, but no one is complaining here. We're just holding a discussion.  )
Anyway.... I just thought of something earlier. There is an item called Metal Powder that will raise a Ditto's defense. That means it was intended for battling. Maybe Ditto actually is a decent battler if you raise it a certain way... I'm going to experiment with this. |

Ditto is just your ordinary transforming pink gelatin.  They're not worthless either. Just think of it, having it transform into a dragon-type to beat another dragon-type with it's new set of moves. It could give you an advantange. Plus, you can have loads of transforming fun! I use my Dittos for breeding pretty much, but sometimes I make them battle. Don't think of Ditto as a bad thing!

This whole thread was supposed to find the other use, other then breeding with ditto, not a ditto battle. I can only find one use for ditto, and that is breeding. |

Alright, if you're looking for the "purpose" of Ditto; please tell me - what is the purpose of Linoone? Lombre? Rattata? Heracross? Dragonite? Typhlosion? What is the purpose of a lot of things in this world? The answer is - not everything has a purpose. You cannot say Ditto doesn't have a purpose besides breeding. |

ditto is very much capable of battling, it is simply not as strong as other pokemon stat-wise. though thats not to say that it doesn't "outstat" other pokemon- Ditto has higher defense than sharpedo ditto has higher attack than chansey and a lot of psychic types ditto has higher speed than slowking ditto has higher special attack than rhydon and a lot of physical sweepers. ditto has higher special defense than a lot of rock types just cos all of ditto's stats aren't off the scale doesn't make it a bad pokemon, it just needs more skill to use. the reason ditto has the metal powder is because it must waste the first turn in battle transforming, the metal powder is intended to help it survive the opponents initial attack and give it the chance to use it's newly transformed moves. |

Being able to breed with anything(besides leendaries) is great it means those pokemon that you only get one of can be reproduced. I found one use for ditto in a battle and i dont care if there are no more uses for it this one is an achievement for it, against loreli's lapras a strong ditto can win use transform and change into lapras because that lapras knows thunderbolt ditto will know thunderbolt and that works welll against lapras so it can beat that one pokemon (and maybe a kyogre with thunder) but it has this victory dont take it away.... I think(but am probably wrong) that ditto was ina n early episode so thats wy its in red/blue |
