I've always thought it was female since they brought in Richie with his Pikachu, Sparky. Mainly because Sparky's voice is so much lower than pikachu's but thats just my opinion

I also think that picachu is a female becuase one Sparky has a deeper voice as Mutant_Mewtwo said. Also most of the things picachu does in general on the show are girl like. How it always try's to be nice to eveyone.

Being nice isn't a gender specific trait and whether a voice is baratone or saprano is dependent on gender either. I always remember pikachu being refered to as 'it' though not he or she. But pikachus aren't genderless as I said.

One thing is for sure, I'm going to be a lot more obervant about the pronouns people uses for pikachu.

Ash's Pikachu is male, though he acts "girly" it's just to be cute, there are many characters in anime that are cute but are male. Just because Richie's pikachu had a lower voice doesn't make Ash's pikachu female, there are many men that have a higher pitched voice than others and also many men with voices lower than other men's.

Reminds me of a punchline from a popular sitcom: "I'm not gay, I'm British!"

Maybe Ash's Pikachu is fixed?

I think Ash's {pikachu} is a male because Ash is a boy and a boy will always choose a male pokemon. Although it is like a "girly pokemon" , I really think it's male.

But can any of you remember a time in the anime when pikachu was referred to as a he or a she?

See that is a mystery we will never solve unless we get to the background of the show and if they ever reveal it in pokemon.

ASH'S PIKACHU IS MALE, cause pikachu was effected by 'charm'(attack) in one episode, and the 'pichu BROTHERS' explain that theyre species is not genderless, and i remember that an episode in kanto ,ash and the gang went to a forest (which MIGHT have had 'pikachu' in its name) there were a lot of pikachu there but they didnt see any but pikachu saw that another
pikachu was spying on him...blah blah .................at the end after....blah blah.........they found out THAT pickachu was female and liked ashes pikachu :o [it was something like this]

That episode seems to be Pikachu's Goodbye. I don't think they mentioned that the little Pikachu spying on Ash's Pikachu was female. The two Pikachus did get along very well though; that I won't deny.

no pokemon is ever reffered to by gender. even pokemon like the nido-family or volbeat and illumise, who can only be one gender, are always reffered to as 'it'. possibly because pokemon is a kids show and bringing the idea of different genders into the mix may create implications of intercourse which would not be tolerated by the censors(those annoying gits)

personally i believe ash's pikachu to be male, i'm not sure why it, just seems like it should be.

You are wrong about the anime not reffering to genders, There are many episodes that reffer to gender or love, like the older episode about the origen of Meowth, or one of the newer episodes were meowth was in love with may's skitty and there are so many more.

Actually, you are the one hat is wrong.

In those episodes, the pokemon are never called 'him' or 'her', it is just so obvious that the two are male and female that even a four year old could figure it out. We know they are different genders, and so innately call them by gender even though they never are on the show.

So if were to assume the genders then your theory about sex drug and rock and roll is invalid. Because if we know there are a different gender and we know that they produce offsprings, then the younger audience knows they have intercourse, how else do they produce offsprings? Inbattle?

On Absolute Anime, it says that Pikachu is a Male. Here's the link: http://www.absoluteanime.com/pokemon/pikachu.htm

little kids imagining pokemon having some hanky panky is not the topic of this chat.
i am merely saying that pokemon are never called girls or boys. It is just that in some episodes, the genders are obvious by the way the pokemon act and by what the humans say.

examples- Totodile falls in love with azumarill
- wigglytuff falls in love with psyduck
- Nidoranmale and nidoran female kissing(well, touching noses really)
-ash's butterfree trying to impress pink butterfree.

e.t.c.

The nidoran male and female thing is obvious. And the butterfree episode we do find out that Ash's butterfree was male because Misty tells him how to appeal to girls (and I doubt the censors would allow lesbianism on the show). However, I don't recall any proof that psyduck is a male nor that Totodile is male.

yes, but they are still never reffered to as 'he' or 'she'. That is the point I'm trying to get across.

At least I think it's a he..but Pikachu can be a little bit "female" at times, but that's rarely..

I think, Pikachu is a male. I don't see it as a female + Ash calls it "his little buddy" so probably Pikachu is a guy. Ok, Pikachu likes perfume but many guys like nice smell.

i'm inclined to say pikachu is male, sure sometimes some of the stuff 'he' does is a bit girly, but when he battles he definately looks male, no?
