See title. I'll have to think for a little while about my answer, but I'll post it later today or early tomorrow.

The fact that you could become freinds with them, perhaps?
(For example, you cant be freinds with a Yu-Gi-Oh card, I believe) <NOT SPEAKING METAPHORICALLY

Nice pic.

I believe it's the appeal of the "story", of a kid being able to get his own "pets", make them battle, and go on a journey around the "world" on his/her own. This idea is appealing to youths, I guess. Also, the Pokemon themselves help to attract the kids

Anyway, I'll move this to General Pokemon Discussion; this topic seems more appropriate there.

pokemon'a popularity owes a lot to the appearance of the creatures, but it is also subconcious.

Little kids want to be treated like adults, they want power and to get what they want (you were like that too, don't bother denying it). Being able to take control of a little monster and tell it how to destroy another little monster gives kids a sense of power and control. Not only that, but being able to decide what attacks your'e own personal creature has allows kids a sense of indivduality.

Adults like the game for a few different reasons, but ultimatley, the same subconcious human desire for power is what makes pokemon such an addicting game.

plus it plays on what all kids like, collecting! I remember me, and pretty much every other kid I knew loved collecting, thats also wehre the cards got it, same with the games, you wanna have the rarest strongest one, the show is about a kid getting treated like an edult, where they have the same influence, and power, same with the games, power and equality irrevelant of age. then its got a complex system with hundreds (okay, only 1 full hundred at the time) of little monsters that varie so everybody will have what they liekl, they've got the cool all powerful and dark mewtwo, the light and fluffy pikas and mews, the big strong cool dragons like charizard. You get a pet, thats your freind, which can be whatever you like, and grants you equallity with adults, then you train it to become powereful, you can get rare ones, or common ones, tons of collecting, after all, gotta catch'em all, or, as the original would have said, catch'em if you can, and as a kid you get that full adult feeling as you'd leave home, travel the world, make freinds, beat bullies and be recognized as powerful, managin your own computer and defeating an evil organization, ya, sounds pretty solid.

Urrmm...
...I think that loveble little rodent friend of our's 'Pikachu' started the Pokemon craze off, after all he's the most famous of all Pokemon. Also the idea that you could go on this big adventure, with six mysterious creatures that over time would become your very best friends maybe even your family. The seven of you would have to face the challenges in life together.

I know these were the reasons that got me hooked to Pokemon.

^^I mean how could anyone not love this adorable little guy?
