Title says it. Which starter type do you pick the most often? For me, its water all the way. Its become habitual for me to get one, as anything else I fell uncomfortable with.
EDIT: Sorry about the minus of grass in the poll, I'm still getting used to it.

I like Water also - can take hits, and deal damage Plus useful against the 1st Rock Gym.

I know, its perfect for Kanto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh.

Fire
Especially Fire + Fighting
Because the pokémon at the start of the game are nearly all grass, bug or normal type... and fighting helps against the rock gym.
So long as you have trained up something (electric/grass) for the water gym you should be fine (except maybe Psychic...)

I tend to avoid Water altogether. The only reason I picked Empoleon in DP was because I hated the other two in terms of looks, despite them being both better.
I go with the one most appealing in looks, to be honest. In Johto it was Fire, in Hoenn it was Grass, in Kanto I it was Grass again, and in Kanto II it was Fire again. Only in Sinnoh did I get the Water type, mostly because Empoleon is half-Steel types, and I'm biased toward liking most Steel types.

I hardly ever go with fire, really. This new generation sort of didn't even give me the option to choose anything other than water though. Monkeys...freak me out XD. Not a big fan of Torterra either.

Grass?
But out of those, I would probably pick fire because I've never played using a water type starter but I've had a fire type starter Pokemon once in my Sapphire game. Other than that, I've always chosen grass.

I like Fire most of the time. But here's the competitive (which is what I would go by if there were any more gens) view:
Kanto:
Charizard - BL *win*
Blastoise - UU
Jhoto:
Typhlosion - BL
Feraligatr - BL
*tie*
Hoenn:
Blaziken - BL
Swampert - OU *win*
Sinnoh:
Infernape - OU *win*
Empoleon - BL
Fire - 2 ***win***
Water - 1
Fire wins competitively..... And if you put Grass in, it would lose for sure, since there aren't any OU Grass starters.

I have no idea what any of that means but grass has always won for me.

I was talking about competitive battling. You know, battling against people using Wi-Fi? EV training Pokemon? IV's? Natures?

Unfortunately, no, I don't know about those things. I can't afford/don't know how to get that; I don't know what EV training is; I can't understand IV's and I only ever remember the basics of which nature types beat each other.
But whenever I've played against trainers in my games or with people over a link cable in "real life", I've won using my grass type. I love my Venusaur; he always comes through, whatever the statistics are.

Oh, it's all pretty simple, but I'm not going to explain it here. Just look at the Psypokes guide.

I already did, I must just be too unintelligent to understand.
Whatever that says, I still prefer the Grass type as my starting Pokemon.

My favorite Grass starter is Sceptile, he looks pretty cool.

Almost always water. The only time I ever chose otherwise for my main file out of the particular generation, was for Sapphire, because Treecko looks so cool.

For some reason I've always chosen fire regardless of what gym is first. i just like most of the fire pokemon better than the water ones. :)

I usually pick fire. Except for in DP i went with water.
Kanto: Charmander
Johto: Cyndaquil
Hoenn: Torchic
Sinnoh: Piplup
I thought its final evo looked the coolest & my wife hates monkeys.

I can't really stand behind just one starter type. In Kanto, I chose Charmander for the 'challenge' (until I replaced my level 44 Charizard with my Shiny Exeggcute, courtesy of lucky safari zone catch), in Jhoto, I chose Chikorita, Hoenn, Mudkip, and in Diamond, Chimchar.
