When Pearl comes out in Australia which is too late in my opinion (coming out in June, came out in April over in America and up in Japan last year), I will buy it but I'd like to know a few things.

I plan on choosing the fire/fighting starter, is this wise?
How many levels should I raise my pokemon between each gym (i.e 1st gym, have at level 10, some at level 11 and 12, raise by 7 levels between each gym battle.)
What level should I get my pokemon to in order to stand a chance against the Elite Four?
What are the main legendaries besides Palkia and Hidran that I can get without leaving my living room?

I always like to have a type structure in my team so I can play with all different types.

Can someone please fill it in ONLY using Sinnoh reigon pokemon, I will change it after I can have my pokemon migrate from my leaf green.

Note: The first or second types of any pokemon on the team cannot be the same as another in the team. Double type pokemon are optional.

1. Infernape (Fire/Fighting)
2. --- (Water/---)
3. --- (Grass/---)
4. --- (Electric/---)
5. --- (Flying/---)***
6. Palkia

*** If any pokemon in slots 2-4 can learn fly, then you may pick whatever you want in slot 5 and it does not necessarily have to be a flying type.

If you fight every trainer you find, don't run from wild battles, and keep decent moves, you'll be fine against gym leaders. It does help to have a pokémon with a type or move that's good against the gym you're going up against, but they never have that many pokémon anyway. Check out GameFAQs for guides that list the levels and types of the pokémon they're using to be extra safe.

You'll probably want your pokémon over level 60 to deal with the Elite 4 without any serious problems. Just make sure to take lots of revives and max potions (and Ethers/Leppa Berries to get back some PP).

As far as legendaries, there's Uxie, Mesprit and Azelf. One of them runs, so you'll have to chase it to catch it. If you transfer Regirock, Regice and Registeel, you can get Regigigas. You can also get Giratina, who's a ghost counterpart to Dialga and Palkia. There's also Cresselia, but I don't know if that's an event Pokémon or not, I haven't gotten that far.

Don't worry too much in game about the makeup of your team. Computer trainers aren't that hard to kill. By the time you get to the Elite 4, you'll have plenty of pokémon to choose from to make your final team.

Girantina: Ghost/Dragon(Turn Back Cave after E4)
Mesprit: Psychic(Lake Verity after Catching/Beating Palkia/Dialga)

Regigigas: Normal(Snow Point Temple after obtaining the National Dex and migrating Regirock, Regice, and Registeel from Pokemon RSE)

Rotom(Legendary?): Ghost/Electric(After Beating E4 and obtaining National Dex, go to The Old Chatue and enter the room with th TV, "talk" to it)
Heatran: Fire/Steel(After you beat E4 and obtained National Dex go to snow point temple and take boat, and go to stark mountain

It's like Mesprit. You can get it after the Nat. Dex and recovering the Lunar Wing for the sailor's son.

If you play the game straight through with JUST Chimchar (oh, and a Lucky Egg attached) and you fight every trainer, by the time you get to the E4, your Infernape SHOULD be at lv 90ish.

That's how I beat Pearl. Just with Infernape. =]
