I'm not a big fan of Charizard or Gyarados (or for that matter, the legendary birds) because they are part flying. Instead of Charizard, I'd go with Arcanine, who has a higher base stat total and is not part flying. As for Gyarados, I don't care how powerful it is, the fact that it takes 4x damage from electric moves is unacceptable. There are plenty of strong water or dragon type pokemon that could take its place.
I haven't quite nailed down my dream team yet (only recently have I gotten back into Pokemon), but so far I think it would include:
I suppose I'd like to have a Tyranitar as the last Pokemon, but I don't think I can get a Tyranitar in FRLG. I think this team is pretty well rounded, the main weaknesses being a lack of strong rock, ground, poison, or fighting moves. I'm tempted to teach my Blastoise or my Dragonite Earthquake, but I'd prefer to have Earthquake on a ground type Pokemon in order to more effectively fight electric Pokemon (especially since electric is ONLY weak against ground). My current team, which falls somewhat short of my dream team, is as follows:
I have yet to find a rock and/or ground type Pokemon with a really high base stat total. If you guys can think of a 6th Pokemon to round out my dream team, or if you have any criticism/suggestions, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!
PS - In case you didn't notice, I'm a big fan of Pokemon with high base stat totals. The lowest BST (if I may) on my dream team above is Blastoise with 530 and the highest is Mewtwo with 680. I pretty much don't even consider Pokemon below 500, hence, no Nidoqueen/king.
PPS - I guess I contradicted myself a little (read: a lot) because I bashed Gyarados for taking 4x electric damage, but then I picked Dragonite, who takes 4x ice damage. Woops.....

. Steelix is resistant to NINE types and is immune to two more and it has a BST of 510, which is decent, and 200 DEF! As tmforeignguy pointed out, Kingdra is only weak against dragon and takes 0.25x damage from TWO types! Plus, its BST is 540, which is higher than the fully evolved starter Pokemon (530). I'd probably teach it surf and dragon claw and it would be a force to be reckoned with.
). I'd pick Machamp over Hitmonlee (or any other Hitmon-) becuase it has a higher BST (505 vs. 455) and it has high ATK.
if I remember correctly. I have a bad habit of making teams with multiple Water types, since they're my favorite type. My Pearl team was the worst example of that, using
