Post subject:  Controversial Topics

Hello, everyone!

Out of curiosity, I'm making a list of controversial subjects; I want to respond to them the best I can and see if/how my opinions change with time/in the future.

I thought of a few themes, but I need suggestions, if you guys have any.

Note: this thread is not supposed to be a discussion of such topics; I just want suggestions to make a bigger list.

Here's what I thought, so far:

- Use and abuse of illegal drugs and recreational drugs, how it affects society, should they be legalized or not, how strong is their relation to violence
- Use and abuse of cigarettes and alcohol; how far can we go
- Abortion: for or against it; what are the repercussions, both mentally, spiritually and socially
- The human genome project/Gattaca; are we playing God? Are we playing Hitler? Ethical and social issues involved
- Death penalty: is it truly effective in helping society? Are there alternatives?
- Religion and beliefs: extremists and in-betweens; is it important to strictly follow a religion, is it possible to believe many different things, why is religion so significant in politics and human relations, are there true psychological benefits from believing in something
- Politics; do we truly believe politicians, is there a political solution for our social-economical-political problems
- The environment, why is it so important to conserve it, what's the impact of its destruction in our daily lives
- Education, of any kind (not only limited to school or professional), and how it affects the development of a human being into a strong and well-prepared person
- Families and relationships; what's the importance of a solid social institution and interactions
- The media, mostly newspapers and television; do they take sides and only show us part of a story, do they help in the construction of a well-informed society and individual, how strongly they influence us
- Prejudice, racism and intolerance; why is it so difficult for many of us to accept other people with different cultures, why we tend do make generalizations; do we have solid, good reasons to "hate" other people

This is all I can think so far.

If you don't have any other topics in mind, you can always help me extend these!

Also, suggestions for documentaries, webcommunities, books and movies are always appreciated! The only "controversial" movies I can thing right off the bat are Zeitgeist and Bowling for Columbine, but I'm pretty sure there are many more.

Thanks in advance. :)

Gay marriage. Even in the year 2010 gay people can't have equal rights (in my state, they can't anyway.) Not sure if that falls in the religion or intolerance subjects, sorry if it does.

Is it fair on kids who are up for adoption/don't have a home for us to be creating treatments for women who can't get pregnant to help them get pregnant (eg. IVF, or female sperm, etc.)?

Porn Videos. A really big problem in my country that even makes actors and actresses go to jail.

Okay:
Men have to sign up for the draft. Now, women can be in the military. Doesn't this mean that women should also have to sign up for the draft??

I've heard some people talk about whether or not the human population should leave our planet (due to overcrowding). Some say that we shouldn't, because God gave us this one (not really controversial or widely known, but it helps )

Social Equality in general. Whether it be by sex, race, or sexual preference.

There's also the whole issue of what "equality" means in society. It often manifests in situations where someone from Group A may find himself in trouble for not respecting the equality of someone from Group B, yet a member of Group B does not have to respect the equality of those from Group A. This tends to pop up as the cliched "You want equality AND special treatment!" argument, but it does raise a valid point about the nature of social equality itself.

The big one in Australia at the moment is boat people and whether they should be allowed to skip the asylum queue, and I find it terribly annoying when people my age attempt to discuss this issue and come up with arguments such as "send them back they're taking our jobs" or on the other spectrum "the majority of Aussies must be racist." People read "INFLUX OF BOATS" in the paper and they automatically assume they've come along on vacation or something. And it definitely doesn't help the issue with one of our potential Prime Minister's slogan being "We'll stop the boats," which makes him sound like a mega xenophobe douche when he probably isn't (on second thoughts.. pretty sure he is a douche anyway).

Well, how about beating one's children vs. child abuse?

I was brought up with the usual spanking routine. I'm Indian, so I'm sure many of you have heard the Russell Peters' bit on beating your kids. XD It's not quite as exaggerated as Peters makes it out to be, and since I've grown an matured, there's no longer a need to control my hyperactive ass. :P But I'm seriously annoyed when I see signs/ads for not beating children. If they misbehave, they need to know who's boss, and not push the parents around. I know I'm old fashioned for 2010, but I certainly don't support abundant beating. I just don't want to be like Ryan's mom (reference to the Russell Peters bit).

I dunno, it's not that big of a topic, and I don't care as much as I seem to ^^up there, but i'm sure it's an issue.

Where I come from (Canada) uneducated immigrants are a controversial topic. Many people do not think they should be greeted with the hospitality they are recieving. A lot of people see the only reason they come here is to abuse our free health care and welfare. To be honest I don't even go to the ER anymore because it takes hours ro see a doctor, I mean like 10 hours. The majority of people I see in the ER are immigrants so.....

Another controversial topic is Health Care. Some people think it should be universal, some don't. They both have good reasons.

Finally, a controversial movie I know of is Religulous.

Two movies that in themselves are not controversial, but cover controversial things, are MILK and Motorcycle Diaries. MILK covers Harvey Milk who was the first openly gay politician in San Francisco and was killed because he was gay. The Motorcycle Diaries covers the exploits of the figure known as Che Guevara.

Homosexuality, and also Bisexuality, in themselves are controversial, or at least heated. If people actually talked about it and people were more accepting then it wouldn't be a problem. Though too bad everything isn't in black and white.

Wow, thanks for the feedback, guys! I'm going to include everything you've suggested so far in my list!

Thanks a lot! Keep'em coming if you can think of anything else! :)

Oh, and the porn videos suggestion reminded me of another subject: pornography, in general, and the cultural differences between east and west regarding sexuallity, women's role in our society and the boundary between "artistic porn" and "blatant derogatory display of uninteligent low-standards appeal" (just made that up)

I myself don't have a problem with pornography, though I probably should. Most of the higher pornography videos and studios runs a good honest business, though honest might not be the best word to use. They work hard and they get an days wage for a days work.
