What events from last decade will you guys remember over the years, whether it be stories and memorable events from the news, movies, music, video games, the Internet, sports, television or anything else? Here are a few defining parts of the decade in my eyes as a child of Generation Y: NEWS: -George W. Bush's presidency. -September 11, 2001. -The resulting wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and on terrorism. -Saddam Hussein's capture and assassination. -Terri Schiavo and the debate that erupted over the right to die with dignity. -The deaths of the Pope and various celebrities. -Pluto's unfortunate downgrade to "dwarf planet." :'( -The continued fight for legalization of gay marriage. -The 2008 presidential election, which resulted in the first black president and the first female Republican vice presidential candidate. MOVIES: -The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars prequel and Harry Potter trilogies/series. -Batman: The Dark Knight becoming the second-highest grossing film of all time. -The success/fad of superhero films in general (X-Men trilogy, Spiderman trilogy, Batman, Fantastic Four, The Hulk, Iron Man, etc). -The Saw series (and torture porn in general) becoming the 00's answer to Nightmare on Elm Street in the 80's and Scream in the 90's. -Animated films becoming almost exclusively computer-animated and 3D. -A lot of freaking unfunny parody movies. -High School Musical series as well as other live-action Disney abominations and Zac Efron's completely ugly and untalented ass. -As a subpoint of the above, Lindsay Lohan and her trainwreck life. -Twilight series and any of its generic twinky pretty boys' untalented asses. TELEVISION: -Survivor giving birth to reality television. -American Idol becoming the #1 show of the decade and the creation of one of my favorite sites: Vote for the Worst. -The end of the Power Rangers franchise on December 26, 2009. :'( -TV channels becoming increasingly niche-targeted in general. -TV shows requiring more commercial breaks in general. -The merge of UPN and WB into The CW. -The rise and fall of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" and imitators. -All those serial dramas with acronyms in their titles (e.g. three different versions of CSI, NCIS, etc). -Annoying Disney heroines (Lizzy, Raven, Hannah) and Miley Cyrus's completely annoying and untalented ass. MUSIC: -The circus sideshow/train wreck that was Britney Spears. -The teen pop explosion that followed Britney (boy bands, chicks who can't sing, etc.) -Music charts being dominated primarily by R&B/hip hop artists after the early part of the decade. -The birth and explosion of internet piracy. -The sharp decline in physical album and single sales and the rise of (legal) digital downloads including iTunes. -The lack of any decade-defining fad genres (e.g. disco, grunge) except "American Idol" in general. -The deaths of George Harrison, Aaliyah, Lisa Lopes, John Entwistle, Joe Strummer, Johnny Cash, Syd Barrett, Michael Jackson and many more. -Songs that spent months at #1 like Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together," all of the Black Eyed Peas' crap, etc. -High-selling albums such as Outkast's Speakerboxx/The Love Below, Norah Jones' Come Away With Me, Eminem's stuff, Beyonce, Susan Boyle selling 3 million in one month at the end of 2009, etc. VIDEO GAMES: -More and more importance being placed on graphics than game quality. -The domination of the Sony Playstation 2 followed by the awful start of the Playstation 3. -The Gamecube knocking Nintendo down to the #3 company only for the Wii to bring them back to #1. -Nintendo's dominance in the handheld market and the failure of the N-Gage (lawl). -Microsoft's entrance to the console market and the rise of the Halo series and the explosion of FPS games that followed. -Pokemon becoming the #2-selling video game franchise of ALL-TIME. -The overnight success Grand Theft Auto III and its sequels. -Wii Sports becoming the best-selling video game of all-time (f*ck that sh*t!). -World of f*cking Warcraft. BOOKS: -The Da Vinci Code. -The Harry Potter series. SPORTS: -WWE wrestler Chris Benoit's double murder/suicide. -Steroid allegations in just about every major sport. -The NY Giants winning Superbowl XLII for major laffoz. -Yankees/Mets Subway Series driving me f*cking insane in late 2000 (plus the Yankees winning and losing various World Series blah blah blah). -The Summer Olympics in Australia (2000), Greece (2004) and China (2008, inc. Michael Phelps) and the Winter Olympics in Utah (2002) and Italy (2006). TECHNOLOGY/COMPUTERS/THE INTERNET: -The expansion of technology in general to the point where so many people have computers and high-speed Internet. -Apple's iPod. -The rise of Web 2.0 and social networking sites like Myspace, Facebook, Twitter and wikis. -Windows XP and the horrible reception for Windows Vista. -The birth and rise of Google. -Memes including All Your Base Are Belong to Us, Mudkip, etc. -PsyPoke surviving the entire decade. :O These were the major events as I could remember them off the top of my head. I forgot a ton, but considering it was an entire decade's worth of events, it'd be hard not to forget stuff. What stood out in particular to you? |

Too bad that's totally obnoxious and irrelevant. You know what I liked about this decade? We got some pretty incredible musicals: Shrek the Musical, In the Heights, Hairspray, Wicked, Urinetown, etc. |

This is really true for all decades, but the thing that sticks out most in my mind is the passing of some legends and the rising of a few bright stars. It seems like a lot of mainstays in culture faded away or died off in the 2000's while new trends popped up. American idol, reality shows, and celebrity news in general have exploded while other things seemed to die off. Not that I'll miss them much, but soaps seem to be on their last breathe too. This is just my opinion, but the world seems much closer now than it did near the start of the last decade. I'm more aware then I was before about people and things elsewhere than I ever was. |

There was a lot of stuff that happened in the '00s, but the thing I hated the most was how the music industry is going down. for example: - Lady Gaga - Kanye West - Disney Channel **** (Mitchell Musso, Hanna Montanna, Miley Cyrus) - Black Eyed Peas - 50 Cent - Pretty much anything Rap, Hip-Hop, any of that ****. Music is like Candy, Throw away the (W)Rappers. I want to go back to the old days when we had: - Van Halen - Slayer - Metallica - Joe Satriani - Twisted Sister - Iron Maiden - Jimi Hendrix - Jeff Beck - Led Zeppelin Why can't we go back to those days. And like Frost said, The lack of any decade-defining fad genres. The only music that comes to mind when talking about the 00's, is Disney music. |

For the U.S. - worst political decade ever, with good luck from reason.tv http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvPuNU_meEc I think that we need a new direction...help us, please? Thats only the U.S. - not even including French President Sarkozy, or Tony Blair of Britain, or the brawls on parliament floor in Japan and Korea. |

I think everything noteworthy has pretty much been mentioned, but we've had the eighties, nineties, noughties, what will the next decade be known as? The "tens" sounds a bit odd. |
