I thought this would be a fun topic to discuss over. If I screwed up delete it, I'm new here. :P

I would choose the tree. I'm a thinker and writer at heart. It's not that I wouldn't like the other options, but I enjoy a nice shade tree the most.

So, how about everyone else?

Probably a tree. I wouldn't want flowers since I'm terrified of bees, and growing food in my garden would be more trouble than its worth. If it ever got hot in summer (lol) it'd be nice to have a tree to sit under too.

Probably fruits and vegetables, god knows I need to eat healthier anyway. I like cherry tomatoes and carrots (mom grew them once, but the carrots were dinky...) and I liked them lots. My dog Pepper ate a few cherry tomatoes though and ended up puking....

By the way, welcome to the forums. Lets hope you stick around. ;)

I'd choose flowers. I love planting and raising flowers in the spring and summer. It's so lovely to have a pretty little garden just full of colorful and aromatic flowers to make me smile. :) If for some reasons I couldn't plant flowers, I'd go with fruits and vegetables.

In other words, gardening is fun. :)

A backyard with all flowers would be the best backyard ever! So colorful and pretty :) I'd love to have a little garden to take care of, to bad my backyard is a barren wasteland right now

I'd have a big tree, because I could sit under it, and it would be nice to have shade from the sun.

Ewww... that leaves a gross image in my mind. I'm never eating cherry tomatoes again.

ANYWAY:

Tree. So much fun can be had with a tree. With flowers you have to worry about bees (which I am allergic too) and snob kids picking them or beating them with golf clubs. (they do in my neighborhood any way :( ) Fruits and vegetables need constant care and if the weather is cold, they die, and animals are also a problem, especially if you live in a city where racoons and such destroy every vegetable in sight.

Flowers. Beautiful, and good for giving to girls.

Fruit and veggies rot and decay, trees lose leaves.

Depending on the flowers, not much maintenance required.

But after flowers, definitely fruits and veggies.

I'm more of a flower person. When arranged correctly, and assuming they don't die or anything, a flower garden can be really pretty. Once I went to a particularly well-tended one in Maine and took a good fifty pictures. :x Fruits and vegetables would be nice, but usually the stuff my family and I grow ends up being puny... (I remember one year yielded midget corn. It was cool to look at, but... it was bite-sized.) Raspberries are usually the only thing that grows properly that I like, so I think I'll pass. A tree would be nice, but I'd take flowers over trees.

I want a pond too. :o

A tree, definitely. I'm a crap gardener. And yeah, you can just while away the long summer days sitting under a tree.

Kinda romantic as well...

Not evergreens. That's what I have planted at my house. sure they lose a few needles here and there but nothing like a 30 foot maple.

Me and the family raise a vegetable garden every summer. We used to raise Cherry Tomatoes (and they were awesome) but they started to... just not grow for some reason. Haven't tried carrots yet though. Poor dog though. D:

Also thanks, and I'll try to stick around.

evergreens might not lose leaves, but they have a tendency to kill all the grass below them, and they aren't very good for climbing or other miscellaneous tree activities.

There's just something foreboding about them... like you expect something to drop onto your head from them.....

Well, you can grow some veggies in the house, or in a greenhouse. Flowers are too much bother. And frankly......prettiness? Nahh.
Trees take up too much room. Yess. Room is good. and they hide lots of sunshine, which is never good.
Or you could have a cherry tree........... :)

I'd want a big oak tree, because i like to think and draw a lot. Plus, trees are green in both meanings. :)

A true backyard garden has both trees and flowers, so if it were one or the other, I would choose a tree. Vegetables aren't aesthetically pleasing, and are more a labor of love. I can't say I would bother much maintaining it, and the grocery store has better fruits than I could manage.

In reality, I have no control over my grounds. The backyard to this building is small and pretty ugly. It does have the whole lake behind it though.

A tree, because it always makes a garden look complete. And I'd have one of them garden chairs under it. I've always wanted a nice big tree, with squirrels and birds, but all I have in my garden are rather wimpy looking shrubs. ;(
