alright, for some reason, people keep calling me emo, it's elevated to "emo dragon" which is cool and all...but still. I even started referring to myself as emo at one point, but I'm over that now. so what is emo exactly? Is it a style of clothing? or a state of mind? what makes a person emo? I'm asking coz I'm really curious, because emo is a new coccept in my country, and lots of people misunderstand it.
I think emo is a state of mind, a state of mind that the more "intelligent" people share, I'm not saying everyone is stupid, I'm just saying there are certain people, who realize life's greater problems and concerns. but of course, there's the even more intelligent people who look at the beauty of life instead of the bad stuff.
sorry the post is vague...my dad's yelling at me to get of the computer...

Emo is derived from the word "emotional"
Generally the term is applied for those that display their feelings openly.
I would say it is a state of mind.
depression sometimes affects such "emo" people more harshly.
Not much to describe....
Some people are emo by clothing/hair, but doing so is just trying to fit into a niche of "emo" (i.e. look at me i'm emo). people are emo by how they think and how they express themselves.

This song explains the general stereotypes of what "emo" is.

that song made me lol. but it's true, emo's usually don't have a suckish life.
I'm not like that, it's true, I feel sad and alone, and I write dismal poetry, but I don't go extreme about it.

Emos usually do have a suckish life. That's why they'd be depressed in the first place.
Unless someone knows you, you're usually only emo if you really show it, or if you dress emo. Usually it seems to be that emos are smarter than other people, but I'm just assuming that since all the emos I know actually type properly.
I would call it being depressed, and the other emo stereotypes (black clothes etc).

I think so too, because most emo usually write fantastic poetry, and you need good literacy for that. I actually joined an emo forum to try and find people to share my views with...all I found was a bunch of posers.
TOPIC: do u think emo girls are hot:
Omg yes they r
totally
I'd one any day
etc.
I'm personally emo in the sense that my life sucks..because the world sucks, but no, I wouldn't call myself emo.....but no harm in having a wicked nickname, eh?

Really, emos are people who are making a big deal over nothing. If you're depressed, you get help. Otherwise, youre just being attention-seeking with the enormous hair and black clothes. >_>

all they need is a dab of perspective. let me explain, post emos live in the suburbs, right? so they aren't exposed to people less fortunate than them, because it's in human nature to concentrate on the people who have a better life than you, as opposed to the people with a much suckeir life.
take me for example, I'm not a big fan of my life, but everytime I start to feel sorry for myself, I think about the people living in tents behind the supermarket, and the people in ghaza and darfur...then I realize that I'm truly blessed with what I have. making me feel much better.
(sorry...headache)

emo people don't always have black clothes and enormous hair.
The depression doesn't always come from material things.
It can come from social, mental, or anxiety problems.

The common 'Image' if you will, of emo, at least where I live is a person who always seem dpressed or cuts themselves for enjoyment.

Cutting is not for "enjoyment". It is to relieve stress, to feel control. as in "I cannot control the way others treat me, so i'll control the way i feel"
It's a side effect of depression, like anorexia.
But yes. emo people are commonly depressed, or have minds that are naturally emotional and overreacting. They need ways to release emotion, and unfortunately, that may result in cutting.
Poetry and music composition are better alternatives in my opinion.
Although emo people generally do have longer hair.
I believe it is a subconscious hypocritical way of "hiding" from the outside world.
Emo people are attention seeking, but have no idea what to do with the attention they recieve, and therefore are unable to process "happy" responses, thus leading to them believing that they have "terrible" lives.

I'm emo but I'm also a lot of other things as well. Emo people can be anyone, dressing in black and having long hair is mainly gothic.
Emo started with the goths which why people stereotype goths into cutting themselves. If your emo then you have strong suppressed emotions such as anger, depression, frustration, etc...
Some emo's do it for attention, others do it to relieve emotion. It really depends on who you are.

I emos. I remember joking with Valentine back in the day.
It's basically when hormones get out of hand with pre- and slightly post-pubescent indivduals, who are confused over life. The opression of parents and schools does not help - ie, when you prevent a student from killing themselves, you are accused of interfering and brought up on insubordination charges.
The intelligent people are sometimes the weakest - you must have an unbendable soul for struggle, and know what real pain is. Those that have not seen real pain usually turn out to be emos - pathetic, wallowing in their life. Lamenting what could have been, as opposed to molding their future, and rectifying the situation.
These EM's are better. Try to be like them, and survive - deal with it.

I'm not emo, it's just that when I come home, I go to my room, put my ipod on, and cry into my pillow until my parents come home. then I usually spend the rest of the day in a good mood.
but my depression mostly comes from grades, my parents(dad), and my loneliness...

taking my ipod away would make me class my life as suckish!!! lol!!!!
Emo is short for emotional. poeple who are emo are usually people who either keep to themselves or people who are very open but hide the fact that they are upset and most of the time depressed. most people show themselves being emo by what they wear and how they act. i admit it...ive been called emo a couple of times yeah. But it nothing new in most places to be called emo by haters. the worst haters are mostly hoodies and gangsters etc. Some people say emos are self harmers where they are so depressed they cut there wrists but most of the time they are self harmers and emos just stand out and where different clothes.
thats my explanation. thank you for your time.

That is an Emu.
