It's an interesting attempt to model how life may have been formed, but as mentioned in the article, it does nothing to explain how DNA was created. Also, many believe that life was more likely formed by other means, and even if Szostak's model is correct, there would be no way to accurately state this as a truth. No one will ever know for sure how life was created; we can only provide theories.
It is interesting, however, in light of the fact nothing can be proven for sure, it serves little purpose at the moment. Hopefully though, by creating "an alternative path to imbuing matter with the properties of life," we can find some practical purpose for the money spent to study this. Or maybe the study already has more reason than already stated, in which case, it's a poorly written article.

I think the fact that being able to create artificial life is seemingly possible is the coolest art of the article.
