She was crossing the road; there were no vehicles; this car came out of nowhere - speeding - and she died because of it.

I'm sure when you're taught to drive, one of the first things you should know is not to speed. So - going with your logic - if you speed, you're stupid.

Although I admit that there should be an allowance for exceptions if a person is in an emergency, (and it's fine if the police/an ambulance/firetruck is in a hurry because of an emergency), as long as the driving isn't reckless.

My opinion;

Going over the speed limit by 3 MPH is really just; it shouldn't be punished. However going over by 30 MPH is hazardous to other people, causes deaths, and could even wreck down the front of a house. There's also a good chance the speeder will end up either in the hospital or dead if he gets into a wreck, or he might get killed by the air bag if he's short. I rest my case.

Whoever done that is a dumb....

I'm sure when you're taught to drive, one of the first things you should know is not to speed. So - going with your logic - if you speed, you're
stupid.

Obviously, but what if you are on a motorway or highway. Also what if you are really late for something important, for example your job. If you get late you get fired. So you know if you don't speed then you will lose your job.

Although I admit that there should be an allowance for exceptions if a person is in an emergency, (and it's fine if the police/an ambulance/firetruck is in a hurry because of an emergency), as long as the driving isn't reckless.

I completely agree with that, emergency services do not have the right to drive recklessly, though if they speed they could help someone.

Like I said - if you're late for work then you should have left earlier. If there's a lot of traffic, it's not your fault you're late if you left on time, but then again, if there's a lot of traffic you won't be able to speed.

If you're a good enough and valuable enough employee, you won't get fired for being late and if you're not then you should have worked harder or at least been responsible and phoned in to apologize because you were going to be late.

Actually, after being taught not to play in the road as a child, the next thing i remember learning about the road was to make ABSOLUTLY certain that the road was clear before crossing. Cars do not come "out of nowhere," nothing does. It is against the laws of physics; things do not just "appear." If the girl had looked both ways and double checked she wouldn't be dead, would she? And if you would argue a blind corner, i am sure that you know a car makes noise, don't you?

And some people are never "taught" to drive. Myself as an example.

If a car was speeding then it would just come "out of nowhere" - as in it would come round the corner and a person who was already crossing the road because before that the road had been clear would be screwed because the car would be going too fast to stop. Unless the road was long enough for the crosser to make it alive in time.

*Sarcasm*
I know, how about you tell me exactly where you live then I'll fly there; you find a way of letting me know when you're crossing a road that looks clear and I'll come speeding round the corner and see if you get hit.
While I'm at it I may as well be high and drunk.
^ *End of sarcasm*

Where I live in the city there are too many roads close to each other for me to be able to tell where the noise of a car is coming from unless it's in my sight.

I think I give up. Evidently most of you think risking others' and your own lives is fine so you have fun with that.

"Evacuate? in our moment of triumph? I think you overestimate their chances!"

By the way, I'm a tad bit curious of what you thought of my last post, obviously GQ didn't hate it, or else he would have attacked it outright, but I still want your input CJ. (Can I call you CJ?)

I pray that my fellow Americans are referring to major roadways, (EG: Turnpikes, Interstate highways, ) not metropolitan areas. There are many any tragic accidents each year that could have avoided by simply obeying the laws. Is it all that hard to ease up on the pedal a tiny bit? Are you so selfish as to risk the possibility of killing someone just to get to wherever it is you're going a few minutes faster? on the freeway it's one thing to speed, but in the presence of pedestrians it's completely inexcusable. I should also point out that when crossing the street, pedestrians have the right of way. A courtesy that is frequently ignored. (And I should know. I play the role of pedestrian quite frequently.)

Rules weren't put in place to stop people from having fun, in fact, there are plenty of ways to have fun Without potentially harming others, or even breaking rules! really there are! Unfortunately, the popular world seems obsessed with glorifying rule breaking and self destructive behavior making it look OK, even inviting. Let's use a mild example here, we'll use the alcohol commercials on TV these days.

Usually there is some kind of catchy music playing, and there are lots of sexually appealing figures wearing a minimal amount of clothing, and there all dancing or beckoning to the camera or some other such activity. Right?

Now for a reality check. Suppose you went out to one of these bars, how many of these hot single girls do you think you would find? None? probably correct.

Now I'm not trying to preach DON'T DRINK here, but I AM trying to point out that just because it's popular, or sounds fun at the time does not make it right. Speeding may sound like "Fun." But going to court over the death of somebody's 6 year old girl won't be fun, It really won't.

On the highway, things take a entirely different look, but as I already wrote about that, I'm just going to tell you to go back a page and read what I said then.

I thought your post was ok except...

My advice is to simply go with the flow, instead of complaining to your local authorities. Thats a lot of tickets after all, and it would be practicably impossible to pull every single person over for speeding. Instead they usually just go for people who are driving noticeably faster than everyone else, as these are also a danger.

If you still feel threatened, Go buy a Semi. People are willing to slow down for them. :D

...I didn't understand what you meant by "go with the flow" and I don't know what a Semi is sorry.

Lol, sorry, I should have been clearer. I know what the saying "go with the flow" means but I don't understand what Darth DLA meant to "go with the flow" with... If you get me?

Now I understand the Semi thing, I thought it was a type of car or something to do with cars because we're talking about them but that makes a lot more sense. Thanks GQ.

This my friends, is a prime example of why in language learning programs they have "American English" and "English English"

By "Semi" I was Referring to a Semi-Trailer truck. apparently in your language you'd call it an articulated lorry. Although I'm sure that guns would easily convince people to slow down, although a few might speed up. (EG: OMG! People with guns! I'm outta here!)

(Off topic:
A Semi-auto Machine gun?! What?? Yeah all guns are mechanical in nature, but, Here in the states when we say machine gun we mean This. I didn't know that there were semi-automatic machine guns. Where can I buy one? :P )

By go with the flow, I mean that on a major road (Pedestrians are not allowed on highways in the US, But I Don't know what the rules in the UK) it's generally safer for everyone to travel at the same speed. Obeying the law is good, but some laws seem to loose their appeal when the endanger rather than protect. For example, if you had 3 lines of people traveling to get to something, and one person slowed to talk to friends or for a different reason, they would eventually be asked to move forward or even pushed, even in accident sometimes. in a car, getting pushed can be a life-ending experience.

I go the speed limit everywhere, regardless. If it is 70 MPH sped limit, I go 70 mph. It it is 35, I go 35. I still wonder abnout my younger brother though. He has had 4 or 5 speeding tickets, has been in about 3 accidents for speeding, AND HE STILL DOES IT!! I wish he could realize how stupid he is.

Lol, we speak the same language.
? That's like what a machine gun is in England too. What's the difference?
Yeah, we say lorry or truck but don't tend to use the 'articulated' part of the name (just because it's too long and people know what you mean without it).
Oh, well, this makes sense too but the idea of a machine gun made me laugh more, lol.

"Slow the f*** down fools or I'll blow you brains out!"
For some reason, I imagine that to be said in the 'Mr. T' voice.

Maybe you should've read my above post before you lead me to believe you were a 12 year old. I said in VERY LIGHT traffic. As in the highway, freeway, or expressway. Where there are no corners, just open road. And people shouldn't be crossing these anyway. Maybe you should read someones' whole post next time before using you secret weapon (sarcasm). Sound like a spoiled 12 year old.

? Actually, I think you sound more like a 12 year old than I do, considering you don't appear to know what "spoiled" means. How, in any way, did my post make me sound "spoiled"? Or 12 for that matter. Evidently I'm more responsible than the majority of posters on this thread and I'm sorry that people caring more about having fun than not risking killing themselves/others makes me angry, (wow, there's that supposed "secret weapon" again :|).

Internet: serious business. :P

Yes, speeding is a concern; speed limits are generally posted with an eye toward the demographics and traffic patterns of an area, based on decades of data gathered from tens of thousands of traffic accidents. The faster you go, the deader you get when you reconfigure a power pole, and the more likely it is that you won't see a pedestrian (or dog, or deer, or blind driveway).

On the other hand, people are usually pretty good at self-regulating on the open highway. Traffic problems on divided four-lanes are usually a result of in-car distraction or mechanical failure, both of which are hazardous no matter what the going speed is.

If I had my way, the American economy would be more locally focused, allowing for bicycles and low-speed vehicles rather than full-on automobiles, and no one could have a standard auto license until the age of 25. The Allstate ads are right, folks - the brain doesn't finish developing the portions relevant to quick judgement until the mid-twenties. I say this as a decent driver since the age of 15, trained in road and race driving.

Well, I just think people who have to use sarcasm to make their point are usually uneducated or I assume they are young. Couple that with the fact that you didn't read my post apparantly. Most people who reply after reading the first sentence/part of another post, and not the whole thing I also assume to be young. Also, spoiled probably was not the best word choice, but most 12 year olds are a little bit spoiled. Sorry if I offended you. Just my opinion.

I really hate it when people say to "live a little" on safety rules like speed limit. In my opinion the only rules that should be given slack are those in which you only hurt yourself. Things like the age limit to drinking are like this, if you feel the risk is small enough to take then that's your problem. But if you want to operate a two ton piece of moving metal then you need to obey the rules, you won't be the only one you hurt in a crash; not everyone is willing to take your risks.

Hmm, I did read all of your post but speeding is wrong; against the law and risks lives in whatever traffic.
To make assumptions or accusations; to not understand somebody's point of view when it's plain and simple; to use words incorrectly; to spell incorrectly when you're attempting to subtly offend somebody, (and so on :|), these suggest that someone is young, not the use of sarcasm.
I didn't use sarcasm to make my point in the first place, some peoples' ignorance and foolishness led me to doing so.
I think that in this case, it's not people with my opinion who are "uneducated". Rather, it's the people who think it's fun/fine to break laws that could end up ruining someone's life or end in murder.

I was only ever spoilt by my Gran before she died, (and that was over five years ago). In fact, my mum prefers to clean; watch her programmes; listen to the radio and go out than to speak a word to me. My dad, well, he works 12 hour shifts then spends his free days naively watching porn on the computer or going out at night.

You didn't offend me; your idiocy actually amuses me.
As they say - sticks and stones mate. Sticks and bloody stones.
Get in my shoe and annoy me.

Actually, my vehicle weighs in the mid 300 pound range. That is like a very obesse man. Add my weight (200lbs) and that makes 550. That is like a very, very obesse man. And it is about 80% plastic. Meaning almost anything I hit at any speed will make me the loser of the battle. And my insurance is damn good, so other vehicles will be taken care of.

CJ - Sticks and stones? It appears to me you're the only one calling names. And for someone who isn[t offended, you sure are pretty hostile.

nfield - Is your name pronounced like the part of a baseball field?

What kind of vehicle are you driving that only weighs 300 lbs.? The only thing I can think of is some sort of bike. I do not think they are 80% plastic though.....

What does the pronunciation of nfields name have to do with this? :?
