Okay, I am very aggrivated with this. I see it all the time, mainly because my job requires me to drive all the time. Last I checked, the word limit meant highest, not average!!! Yet I am the only one on the road who goes 55 in a 55, not like everyone else who goes 65-85 in a 55. What's worse is that in a school zone on a school day during school hours, I go 25 if the school speed limit is 25, yet everyone not only speeds like crazy during this, they look at me like I'm crazy!! Even worse, cops do it too!! Every cop I've seen driving around goes 10+ over the speed limit. Around here, most people think that teenagers speed too much and grannies drive too slow. Guess what? NO ONE GOES LESS THAN 5 OVER!! It's not just teenagers. It's everyone. I am the only one obeying the law, and people think I'm retarded on the road. Since when is driving the speed limit retarded? It is there to keep people safe!!! Parents dropping off kids at school don't do the school speed limit. Lucas Transportation, a company that acts as transportation for picking up/dropping off kids at school drive faster than anything I've seen!! That's safe?? Hell no! Not even school buses go the school speed limit. All they care about here in Raleigh, NC is don't drink and drive. Yes, alcohol is bad when driving, but so are other things!!!! In fact, I don't think cops around here care at all about this stuff. I once saw a stopped school bus with its sign out, and 6 cars drove right past it with the sign out. A cop was sitting there behind them, and did NOTHING!! Even after the bus started moving, he did NOTHING!! Is this right??!

Speed limits are more like guidelines anyway. The only time you'll get pulled over for going ten above the limit is if they're filling their quota, or if you're in a neighborhood or school zone, or if the cop is an ass.

And cops can drive as fast as they want. :O

Yes, we all know caps lock is cruise control for awesome. But speed limits are there for a reason, to keep other people as well as yourself safe. Last week, on a road near my house somebody crashed into a central reservation doing 60 in a 30 mile zone. They died and their car was pretty much ripped apart. Now tell me speed limits for losers :/

Anyway, speed limits are a damn good thing. People in cars are idiots if not given strict rules and harsh consequences. Trust me. :P

About the only thime I see people actually driving the speed limit is when they're on their road test and there's an examiner sitting beside them. Other than that, everyone where I live drives 10-20 over the speed limit, too, and they look at me like I'm stupid for driving the limit. They also look at me like I'm stupid for stopping at a stop sign. What's wrong with people anymore?

And about people passing school busses with their stop signs out. Everyone who does that is a bloody idiot. Once I was getting off the school bus and ready to cross the road when some idiot speeds by at 70 kmh and almost hits me! Needless to say I was pretty peeved.

Speed limits are more like guidelines; it's perfectly fine to go 5-10 mph above or below and not get pulled over unless the cop is a complete @$$hole.

You're way to stiff for the rules, learn to live a little.

And don't go saying "rules are there for a reason", because if everyone followed them to a 'T' the world would be an awfully boring place.

Umm, you aren't terribly alive when you get run over by a speeding car.

Speed limits are perfectly reasonable rules. Why would you want to go incredibly fast anyway, unless you're an arsehole who doesn't care about other peoples' safety?

Also, your second statement doesn't apply to all rules. The rule "don't watch pirated movies" is boring and ignorable. "Don't kill people" is a pretty sensible idea.

I pretty much see what you mean. Since I'm only 11, I highly doubt that I have a drivers license, but I see people speeding all the time.

One time on my street, there was this stupid driver who went up and down my street at like 200Kph to impress his girlfriend, but the worst part was he didn't have a muffler, so you can't even imagine the noise it made. He continued to do that for a few days before the police finally dicided to do something about it. They took away his car and gave him a speeding ticket for three reasons:
Because he was going more than double the speed limit.
Driving without a muffler
and
Disturbing the peace (which is illegal in the zone of the city I live in).

Breaking a rule that was set by the police may be fun for a while, but certainly not when you crash into a pedestrian.

You'll learn damn well to follow the speed limit when your licence gets taken away for speeding, and spend lots of money for court costs, the ticket itself, police costs, and any damage you've caused.

A car is heavy machinery. It's very dangerous. Speed limits are set to protect everybody, especially in a neighborhood or school zone. Whether or not you speed on the highway, that's your decision -- there are less risks on the highway (unless you're a real idiot).

Some rules are meant to be broken, like underage drinking. That's always fun. Vehicle laws, however, are indispensible. The more, the better.

LOL.

I have had a bad experience with overspeeding.

It happened last summer, when we bought our new car. Two days after we bought the car, this truck races down the street, crashes into our parked new car, going like 50 kms over the limit, then quickly escapes while we rush behind it trying to stop it and take the truck's licence tag.

Then we had to pay 600$ to fix our toasted car.

The driver is uncaught, because we were unable to get the licence tag.

Speed limits are primarily in place to protect the drivers inside the car rather than outside. For the most part, people drive safely, even if they do speed. Pedestrians are only at risk in residential and busy commercial districts in which the speed (here anyway) is regulated to 25 MPH. Speed on the highway is limited only to protect drivers from causing more fatal collisions. Depending on where one drives, 5-10 over isn't such a big deal, nor should anyone be pissing and moaning over others driving that much over. I'm not unknown to drive 90 (145 K/h) on highways, and I don't consider it much of a danger to anyway else, so long as I'm in the passing lane.

Obviously 'not killing people' is a sensible rule, but speed limits work a certain way. And until you get it through your thick skulls that it is OK to go 5-10 miles over the limit, you're going to keep whining about it.

I agree after a certain point. Any higher than say, 11 miles over the speed limit and the person needs to slow down. As long as they are going within 5-10 miles per hour of the designated speed limit, they're fine.

I also don't understand why people are bringing up the police speeding. It's there job to get places fast, isn't it?

Yes, cops are supposed to go fast when trying to get to an emergency, and that is why they also turn their sirens and lights on. But if they are driving to work or something and are speeding like crazy, they don't deserve to be officers in my opinion.

In a city or town, speeding is wrong. (Unless you happen to be an Emergency response vehicle en-route to a problem) On the highway or (to a lesser extent) on wilderness roads however, things get a little more complex. The rules apply on a highway to protect the drivers, but if everyone around you is going 70, and you're going 60, you're a danger to yourself and the other drivers around you, as you are in effect getting in people's way. eventually you'll get "Pushed".

My advice is to simply go with the flow, instead of complaining to your local authorities. Thats a lot of tickets after all, and it would be practicably impossible to pull every single person over for speeding. Instead they usually just go for people who are driving noticeably faster than everyone else, as these are also a danger.

If you still feel threatened, Go buy a Semi. People are willing to slow down for them. :D

Sigh. This isn't true. I'm sure only myself and goldenquagsire see adverts like the example I'm going to use as I think we're the only ones to post in this topic who are from the U.K. but I hope this makes you think.
In this advert we see a young girl get hit by a car going at 10 over the speed limit and dying. Then, in slow motion, we hear her bones un-break and see her body un-sprawl from the awkward position she landed in when she was hit and smashed into a tree - basically, we see the reversal of her death. Then I think we see her get hit again at the speed limit of 30 miles per hour but live this time and hear a girl's haunting voice says "Hit me at 40 and there's an 80% chance I'll die. Hit me at 30 and there's an 80% I'll live".

So, sure, driving over the limit might be "fun" or give you a thrill and stop you from feeling like you're going too slowly, but when you're driving over the limit I hope you consider that advert in future. Let's see you get a thrill if you're the one to kill someone or ruin their life because you didn't want to go as slow as what is necessary to save lives.

Speed limits are rules, not guidelines. Do you think they're just in place to stop us from zapping about? They are there to stop us from killing each other, for pity's sake, not for us to break them just so we can have a bit of fun.
Need to drive faster to get to work? - Leave earlier.
Want some fun badly enough that you risk killing somebody? - Go and get laid. (I'm sorry but I'm quite angry right now if you couldn't tell). Or, if you're sad enough that you can't have fun without this, (which someone who speeds for fun probably is), get rat arsed.

Oh my G*d, are you mentally insane? Let's see... don't kill others; don't steal; don't commit fraud; don't go over the speed limit...
Yeah, you know, I think I'll make my life less boring by breaking one or two of these. I wonder if I can still get on Psypokes in prison :|.
When we have fun with our friends or enjoy our job or raise a family, are we breaking the law?
It isn't rule breaking that makes life less boring. Breaking the rules ruins lives - yours if you go to prison; the family of whoever you kill or seriously hurt; the victim/s of your crime.

Whatever amount of fun it is, rules are not made to be broken. We're uncivilized and horrible enough already, if there weren't rules like this then I think I'd rather be dead than live in that kind of society.
I'm 18 and actually still slightly frightened to cross the road because of the inconsiderate idiots out there.

Actually, I love fun. I love fun so much that I think I might just not end up in jail for killing someone because I've been speeding.
I have fun by learning Psychology, the subject I love most, (coincidentally, I think a lot of you need your heads testing and, if only it were possible, your hearts); by being with my friends and chatting/laughing about random things; going to the cinema; playing Pool and arcade games; spending time with my girlfriend; making sweet luuurve; playing Pokemon; coming on Psypokes; watching the shows/films I love and listening to music I love. And this is just now - who knows what I'll be enjoying in the future?
(Actually, what with all you people who think it's fine to speed out there, I might not be having fun at all in the future, I might be buried somewhere after getting hit by an insane person.)
I don't have fun by risking my own and others' lives.

Some of your opinions disgust me.
I don't care that a lot of you will, most likely, dislike me for this because at least I know I'm humane enough not to selfishly risk killing somebody.

Yeah, I've seen those. Thing is, I dunno how much truth there is in that. You'd probably still suffer bad injuries at 30, or even 20 mph.

Overall, it's most important for pedestrians to cross at the right places and for drivers to actually stop there (which they never seem to do round here ¬¬). Speed limits are still pretty important and you should stick to them.

To an extent. Video game piracy is a crime, and *cough points at collection of illegal ROMs and video game music*.

Some rules are basically ignorable, like the aforementioned anti-piracy laws. Speeding ridiculously is not.

YES!!!! Okay, I feel what you are saying. When I said that stuff, I meant on the highway. I also ride sportbikes (actually, bike, I only have one - hopefully getting an R6 in march) and I also HATE the guys that ride like that. I am NOT one of those. I only ride aggresively/stunt on the open road or in VERY LIGHT (less than 4 cars) traffic. I never weave in and out and i always have my brain in my helmet.

I would like to point out that some riders/drivers are better off at/under the speed limit. These are the people that can't drive. I am not one of those...I am a very good rider and driver. I have studied raceing and plan on taking a racing school as well as many track days. I also have around 5000 hours on racing simulators.

For me, my reaction time is VERY fast (I think it was under 1.5 secs at a football combine) and i know and obey all traffic laws (cept speed limits). I also only push it on roads i am VERY FAMILER with. The last time i crossed double yellow was in August (I was still learning how to ride).

One of the first things you learn as a child is to not play in the road, so if this girl's parents weren't stupid, she wouldn't have been hit. Jaywalking is illegal for a reason, roads are for cars, not people.
