POKEMON EMERALD OVERVIEW OF CHANGES

On this page you will find an overview of all the changes in Emerald, and how to get a few crucial things.

Minor Graphics Changes

  • New outfits for Brendan and May
  • LGFR font used
  • Vigoroth move your furniture at the beginning
  • Pokemon Animations - check them all out in our PicDex

Overall Feature Changes

  • New Phone - call up past trainers for rematches (including Gym Leaders)
  • 2 vs. 2 battles where you and a computer player team up
  • 2 vs. 2 battles where different types of trainers battle together against you
  • Changes to Gyms: Layout changes, new 8th Gym Leader, can rematch Gym Leaders who will have different and stronger Pokemon
  • The contest houses in Slateport, Fallarbor and Verdanturf have been replaced by a practice Battle Factory, a practice Battle Arena and a practice Battle Palace respectively. All contests now take place in Lilycove
  • Abilities now do things on the map screen
  • Pick Up now gets different things depending on your level
  • Breeding changes

Overall Specific Changes

  • A new section of the Safari Zone with Johto Pokemon: Aipom, Gligar, Hoothoot, Houndour, Ledyba, Mareep, Marill, Miltank, Pineco, Octillery, Quagsire, Remoraid, Shuckle, Snubbull, Spinarak, Sunkern, Stantler, Teddiursa, Wooper
  • Get one of the Johto starters - Once you have completed the Hoenn Dex (200 Pokemon caught), go to Birch's Lab and he will give you a Chikorita, Cyndaquil or Totodile
  • Wallace is now the person you challenge after the Elites, but the real Champion is still Steven who can be found in Meteor Falls
  • Can get both the Claw and Root Fossils. You choose one at the Illusion Pillar on Route 111, to open it, get the Go-Go Goggles and talk to the Ruin Maniac in Fallarbor. The other sinks into the ground. Once you have the National Dex, head to the Fossil Maniac's house (Route 114) and go into the cave. This cave has Ditto and at the end of the cave will be the other fossil
  • Move Tutors teaching attacks that were TMs from RBY and GSC that you can pay to use again
  • Battle Frontier - an island full of different battling stadiums

Legendary Changes

  • Catch Rayquaza before Elite Four and both Kyogre and Groudon after the Elite Four (all at level 70).
    Once Rayquaza has been summoned to Sootopolis City, it will be available for capture at Sky Pillar.
    After the Elite Four, check the Weather Institute for areas of extreme sunlight. A land cave has appeared on one of Routes 114, 115, 116 or 118 where Groudon can be found.
    After the Elite Four, check the Weather Institute for areas of heavy rain. A marine cave has appeared on one of Routes 105, 125, 127 or 129 where Kyogre can be found.
  • Regi changes - Follow the RS Regi guide to find them, but where it says Relicanth in first slot and Wailord in the last slot, switch them in Emerald - Wailord first, Relicanth last.
    Regirock cave - Press A on the Braille, move two steps left, two down and use Rock Smash
    Regice cave - Press A on the Braille, the walk right and follow the wall all the way around the room to open the door
    Registeel cave - In the middle of the room, use Flash
  • Pick which one of Latias and Latios you want to catch in the wild.
    After beating the Elites, your Mom asks you to choose either a Red or Blue Pokemon (Latias and Latios respectively). The one you pick flies around and appears at random on the World Map. The other must be obtained by getting an Eon Ticket from Ruby or Sapphire, and visiting Southern Island.
  • Catch Lugia, Ho-oh, Deoxys and Mew (Nintendo Events)
    The Old Sea Map is required for the ferry to take you to Faraway Island, where Mew can be found.
    The Mystic Ticket is required for the ferry to take you to Navel Island, where both Lugia and Ho-oh can be found.
    The Aurora Ticket is required for the ferry to take you to Birth Island, where Deoxys can be found.
