Verdict: Golem's role is quite similar to Rhydon's, except that Golem has slightly worse stats, but it possesses the one trump card he needs to even the playing field with Rhydon: Explosion. Other than Explosion, Golem works exactly like a slightly inferior Rhydon: Earthquake and Rock Slide for type coverage, Body Slam to paralyze things, and Substitute to help you survive Surfs and Mega Drains after Golem's biggest threats have been paralyzed late in the game. And, of course, when the going gets tough, Golem always has his kamikaze attack to help out. While Rhydon is probably the better choice, Golem is still worth considering (plus he's less commonly used, if that appeals to you).
