Black 2 and White 2 follow the grand tradition of every Pokemon game since Ruby and Sapphire to have a time wasting sidequest, by featuring the movies of PokeStar Studios! Once you've healed at the PokeCenter from your battle with Roxie, you can head north to find the Actor who recruited you talking to his boss. The Actor then leads you to the movie theater, where "Bryce Man VS Riolu Man" is playing. As you watch, you can view the opinions of the audience, which turns out to be...less than good. Turns out PokeStar is going through a bit of a downtrend, and it's going to be your job to fix this! The Actor will bring you to the set where movies are shot, where you'll meet another familiar face from Black and White, former Iccirus City Gym Leader Brycen! Brycen seems to have retired from his Leader duties and is now focusing solely on movies. Since you're here at the set, go ahead and talk to the Actor at the entrance to the set to start staring in a movie. In it, you will be taking the role of Riolu Man (or Riolu Woman) and will have to defeat Brycen (Bryce Man) in battle. There are several ways to win, and you'll get to make some cheesy lines in the middle of the battle, so have some fun with it! Once you win, you'll be able to go to the theater and watch your movie, where you're sure to be the next big star! Regardless, once you're done at PokeStar, head back into Virbank City.
As you head back to Virbank, you'll notice Roxie and your Rival near the docks, facing off against a few members from Team Plasma! Knowing they're cornered, the three of them challenge the three of you to a battle. The one you face only has a single Patrat, though, so it should be an easy win. After they are defeated, the Plasma grunts push you out of the way and try to escape to Route 20. Roxie starts to run after them, but before she does she gives you HM01 - Cut! HMs are just like TMs, except that the moves they teach are used in the field much more often than most TMs, but can only be forgotten at certain Move Forgetters, so be careful who you teach them to. Cut itself is a mediocre Normal type move that, when used in the field, can cut down thin trees. Roxie and Rival then run after the Plasma members, so you should as well. On the north bridge of Route 20, near the entrance to Floccesy Ranch, you'll see Rival, who tells you that one of the Grunts is hiding out and asks you to look for her. Luckily, this isn't a difficult search - the grunt is just below the Lass you fought earlier. She'll challenge you with her Purrloin when you talk to her, and run off again when you defeat her.
Rival will tell you they likely tried to escape Virbank, so head back there. If you want, you can get a Super Potion by heading into the inner part of the Industrial complex, then turning left at the first opportunity into a hidden path, and using Cut on the small tree. Regardless, when you go back to the docks you'll see Roxie and her father talking again. Roxie heads back to the gym, and her father, who happens to be a sailor, will take you and Rival on a boat to Castelia City, to chase the Plasma grunts and bring them to justice.
Castelia City
Castelia City is by far the largest city yet found in the Pokemon world. It is also the first place you can reach that was previously in Black and White. The general layout of the city hasn't changed much in the two years that have passed, however. Because of the large size and nonlinear shape, you can explore it in whatever order you want. Castelia has 6 large streets to cover. Main Street is the curved road that runs along the coast. There are four streets that head through the main part of Castelia; from left to right they are Gym, Narrow, Mode and Castelia Streets. These four meet in the center Plaza, and going north from there is the 6th, unnamed road that leads out to the desert of Route 4. Main Street also has five piers that stick off toward the ocean. From left to right, they are called Liberty, Unity, Prime, and Cruise Piers. The final, rightmost pier is unnamed. Because of the enormous size of Castelia City, we'll tackle them in sections, starting from the south and working north; however you may feel free to explore any sections you want.
The Wharf
Roxie's father will drop you and Rival off on Prime Pier, where he will wait to take you back to Virbank anytime you want. Rival registers his info into your Xtransceiver, then leaves to search for Team Plasma. If you go down to the end of the Pier, you can pick up a Heart Scale, which can be traded later in the game with a special person to let your Pokemon remember moves it has forgotten. When you exit the Pier onto Main Street, a clown will give you a free Bicycle! This will make getting across Castelia much easier, so register it as your Select item as soon as you can. This clown will also give you a Rare Candy if you find his three clown friends that are scattered around Castelia. One is in the Battle Company building, one is in the same building as Fennel, and one is in the Passerby Analytics building. We'll be going by all these places eventually, so you can knock them out as we go. Now, we're going to head to the right side of Main Street and work our way left. If you go into the gate at the end of the road, the woman next to the video board will give you a Quick Claw, a hold item that will sometimes let a Pokemon move first in a turn. This is the gate that leads out to Sky Arrow Bridge and the southern part of East Unova, but a Worker will not let you go here until the postgame. There's nothing to do on Thumb Pier yet, so you can ignore it for now. Cruise Pier is home to the Royal Unova cruise ship, which you can ride at certain times of the day, depending on the season. If you beat a set number of the trainers on board before the ship docks, you'll get an item. Alternatively, you can go onto the deck to get a spectacular panoramic view of part of the Unova region. We've already been on Prime Pier, so there's nothing left there. On Unity Pier, there is a woman who will give you a Destiny Knot, which causes the opponent to become infatuated if the holder is infatuated as well. Unity Pier also has a boat you can take to visit Unity Tower, a special location that is accessible once you've made a trade with someone internationally. Liberty Pier, on the far left of the wharf, also has a boat, which can be taken to Liberty Island, the location of a Victini event in Black and White. There is nothing to do there right now, but you can explore it if you want to.
Main Street
Main Street has two important buildings to check out. The Passerby Analytics Headquarters is located at the corner of Gym and Main Streets, where you can complete surveys to get items. The PokeCenter is also located on Main Street, at the corner of Main and Castelia Streets, so head there if you need to heal up. However, the main place to go is the Battle Company, located at the corner of Main and Mode, which has many trainers to challenge if you need to train a bit more. When you enter, the Janitor will give you an EXP Share, which will give the holder some EXP each battle, even if it didn't participate. This is very handy for raising Pokemon that are underleveled. The girl at the table here will ask you what type of Pokemon you like (Grass, Water, or Fire), and then depending on your answer will give you an item that boosts the power of those types of moves (Miracle Seed, Mystic Water, and Charcoal respectively). The Battle Company has two floors filled with trainers. The 47th floor has a Male Clerk with a Growlithe and a Boss Clerk with a Pidove. Another Male Clerk in the center of the room has a Marill, which is a water type evolved from Azurill; when beaten he will give you some Timer Balls, which are Pokeballs that work better the more turns that have passed in the battle. The lone female Clerk on the floor has a Budew, a Grass/Poison type; next to her is a Guard Spec., which is an X-item that prevents your stats from being lowered for a few turns. The final person on the floor is a Scientist who does not battle you, and instead gives you a Scope Lens, which boosts the critical hit ratio of a Pokemon that holds it. The 55th floor has an Ether hidden in the left corner, and only has one trainer: a School Kid with an Eevee, a Normal type who's main distinction is the fact that it can evolve into seven different Pokemon; and a Herdier, which is the evolved form of Lillipup and the Pokemon you had to rescue from Team Plasma when you visited Floccesy Ranch. Once you're done battling, you can head out to explore the rest of the city.
Castelia and Mode Streets
Castelia Street is the first vertical road on the right, so head here first. The first building you can enter on the right is the Game Freak headquarters, where on the upper floor you can find a Revive on the ground. A Revive will bring back any Pokemon that has fainted with half their maximum HP. You'll notice three people sitting around a box in the center of the room; two of these can be battled. The man on the bottom has a single Clefairy, a cute Normal type fairy. The one on the right has a Pansage, a Pansear, and a Panpour. Incidentally, this man is based on the Pokemon game designer Shigeki Morimoto! Continuing on down Castelia Street, the first building on the left has a Guitarist upstairs who will give you TM44 - Rest, which completely restores the user's HP at the cost of putting them to sleep for a few turns. Moving on to Mode Street, you can buy Casteliacone ice cream from the vendor at any time, except for in Winter. A Casteliacone has the ability to heal a Pokemon of any status condition, and they are relatively cheap at only $100, so be sure to grab a dozen for your travels. Across from the ice cream vendor is Studio Castelia, where the man in the corner will ask you to show him a Pokemon of a certain type each day. If you do so, he will reward you by gifting you a berry of your choice.
Narrow, Gym, and North Streets
Narrow Street is the smallest road in the city, but still has a couple items to get. A man hiding behind a dumpster will jump out at you and give you TM70 - Flash, a move that lower's the foe's accuracy. Next to him is the Cafe Sonata, where the barman will give you a free Moomoo Milk, which heals 100 HP. The Cafe is also where you can access an event involving the legendary Pokemon Meloetta. Gym Street is the location of, obviously, the Pokemon Gym, but the Gym Guide is blocking access for now, and we haven't quite finished exploring anyway. The building on the left here houses the Name Rater, who will let you re-nickname any of your Pokemon, as long as you are the one who caught it. The woman next to him will give a massage to any of your Pokemon once a day, which will increase its happiness a little bit. There isn't much to do on the second floor, but the third floor is where you'll meet Fennel, a scientist researching the dreams of Pokemon. Fennel is the one who will explain to you about the Dream World, a place for Pokemon online. Also here is Fennel's friend Amanita, who designed the Box Storage System used in Unova.
The northern most street has a couple items to get before we head back down to continue with the plot. In the building to the left, the old man near the counter will give you an Amulet Coin, which doubles prize money if the holder participates in the battle. Across the street, there is a girl upstairs who will give you TM45 - Attract, which makes Pokemon of the opposite gender from the user infatuated, which can prevent them from attacking. In the building on the top right, a scientist will give you an Eviolite, which boosts the defenses of any unevolved Pokemon, when you show him a PokeDex that has 40 Pokemon registered. Upstairs, you can find a Charcoal on the ground, which slightly boosts the power of Fire type moves. Finally, head into the north gate, where Bianca will appear and give you the Dowsing Machine, which is this game's Itemfinder. To use it, simply activate it and follow the arrows that appear to any nearby hidden items. Route 4 is beyond this gate, where you can catch Pokemon like Darumaka, Scraggy, Sandile, Minccino and Trubbish, and you can go grab them if you'd like, but for now we're going to head back into Castelia to continue the story.
Castelia Sewers
Head to the Gym now, and have a chat with the Gym Guide blocking the entrance. He will tell you that Burgh, the Gym Leader, is out for a while. While you're talking, another old character from Black and White will show up. This time it is Iris, the dragon trainer and Opelucid Gym Leader from White. Just like in the first games, Iris will help you find team Plasma while they're hiding out in Castelia City. Follow her to where she is waiting near the PokeCenter, and she will lead you to the small pier where the entrance to the sewers is, saying she saw Team Plasma try to escape there. Rival will run up to you and together, you'll enter the sewers under the city. While in the sewers for the first time, you will be teamed up with Rival for all of your wild Pokemon Battles, where he uses the second evolution of his starter (Dewott, Servine or Pignite) and a Pidove. Speaking of wild Pokemon, there are three new options in here for you. In addition to the Grimer that you've already seen in Roxie's gym, you'll find the ever present Zubat, a Poison/Flying bat, and the Normal type Rattata, which is in the top percentage of all Pokemon. Keep in mind that while you are with Rival, your Pokemon will be completely healed after every battle, so if you need to grind for levels a bit, this is probably the best place for it.
Head across the bridge, and when you reach the fork in the path, take the southern split to battle some trainers and get some items. The first person you'll come across is just a person blocking an exit to the sewers; continue on and you'll fight a Janitor with a Lillipup and a Trubbish, a Poison type Pokemon based on a trash bag. Continue down and you'll notice an X-Special to the left. Keep going along the path at the left, past the man in the suit, and you'll reach a place where the path starts splitting up into several branches. Take the far right path and you'll face off against a Worker with the Ground type mole Pokemon Drilbur. The next path over will lead you to a Doctor who has a Sewaddle. Doctors, as well as their female counterpart Nurses, will heal your Pokemon whenever you talk to them after beating them in battle. Obviously you don't need it right now since Rival is with you, but it will be handy for whenever you are down here, so make sure to always remember these locations. To the right of the Doctor is a Leftovers, which will heal a small amount of health each turn to a Pokemon holding it. Between the two is a door, where a female scientist will give you a healing item such as a Potion once a day. Head back down to the original split for the third path up; you'll find a Rare Bone, which can be sold for money.
That's as far as you can go here for now, so head back up to the original split in the road, near the entrance, and head to the left path this time. There is a TwistedSpoon on the ground, which raises the power of Psychic type moves. Right above them are the two Plasma grunts you've been chasing this whole time. You and Rival confront them, then take them on in a double battle. The grunts use two new Pokemon: Sandile, a Ground/Dark type crocodile, and Scraggy, a Fighting/Dark pants lizard. Between yours and Rival's moves, neither should be much of a threat. Once beaten, the grunts will run off, and you'll meet Burgh, the Castelia Gym Leader. The three of you will talk for a bit, and then Rival will give you a HM04 - Strength, which is a Normal type move that lets the user push large boulders in the field. Rival leaves, and Burgh is about to go as well when a strange man will come out of the cave in front of you, complement you on your skills as a trainer, then promptly leave. Burgh tells you he'll be at his gym, and then departs. You can go there now, but there are also new Pokemon and items to get. If you head to the left where Burgh came from, you can grab a Heart Scale. If you go to where the strange man came out from, you'll enter a cave area called Relic Path. There are several new Pokemon that can be found here, including the Psychic/Flying type Woobat, the Rock type Roggenrola, the Fighting type Timburr, and the Rock/Ground snake Onix. There are also a couple trainers here. However it can't be fully explored right now, so catch what you want and we'll come back here later. For now, you should head to the PokeCenter to heal; after that, it's on to the Castelia Gym.
Castelia City Gym
Burgh's Gym has received a massive redesign in the two years since Black and White. Gone are the honeycombs, now replaced with silky cocoon structures that will suck you in and transport you between different levels of the gym. Talk to Gym Guide to get your free Fresh Water, then step into the hole in the cocoon in front of you. Head right to battle the Harlequin with two Sewaddle, then enter the cocoon to his right. When you walk in front of the seemingly full cocoon on the same level, a Harlequin will pop out to fight; he has a Combee, which is a weak Bug/Flying type bee Pokemon; as well as a Swadloon, which is the Bug/Grass type evolution of Sewaddle. Enter this cocoon and you'll pop out on the ground floor. You need to reenter the cocoon from the right side, but a Harlequin with a Sewaddle, a Combee, and a Dwebble (a Bug/Rock type) won't let you pass without a fight. Beat him, then enter the cocoon. You can either battle the final Harlequin with the Dwebble and Swadloon, or just enter the cocoon from the side to get over to the final cocoon. Enter the final one from the left and you'll be brought up to Burgh. You can enter the hole on the right for a shortcut to this room in case you want to heal up. Once you're ready, talk to Burgh to challenge him!
Burgh is the first gym leader in this game to have three Pokemon, but he fails to capitalize on this advantage at all. He leads with a Swadloon, which knows String Shot to lower your speed and Razor Leaf to do damage. It also knows Struggle Bug, a very weak Bug type move that will always lower the foe's Special Attack. Burgh's Dwebble also knows Struggle Bug, as well as Rock Polish to boost its own speed, Faint Attack, a Dark type move used for coverage, and Smack Down, a decently powered Rock type move that serves as Burgh's only coverage against Flying and Fire types. Finally, Burgh's strongest Pokemon is Leavanny, the final evolution of Sewaddle, and knows the same moves as his previous Swadloon (Struggle Bug, Razor Leaf and String Shot), plus Cut.
Though most of the returning Gym Leaders benefitted from their team changes between BW and BW2, Burgh is clearly the exception to the rule. Any of your Fire or Flying types will destroy Swadloon and Leavanny, since his only defense against those types rests with Dwebble. Speaking of Dwebble, any Water type, or Magnemite's Steel moves, should deal with him easily. Keep in mind that Dwebble does have the Sturdy ability, which will let it survive at least one hit. In general, Burgh's moves are too weak and the Bug type's weaknesses too plentiful for him to be any real threat. Just keep the Grass types away.
When you defeat Burgh, you'll receive $2880; the Insect Badge, which makes all Pokemon up to Level 40 obey you; and TM76 - Struggle Bug, a very weak Bug type move that lowers the opponent's Special Attack.
