As you exit the gym, you'll find that Bianca has been outside waiting for you. She'll give you TM27 - Return, which is the opposite of Frustration - it grows more powerful the more the user likes the trainer. Cheren will join the two of you outside, and both he and Bianca will register their contact info in your Xtransceiver. The Xtransceiver is basically a video phone that you can use to call various people throughout the game to get information and hints. You then enter a four way call with Bianca, Cheren, and a lady who introduces herself as Professor Juniper. Juniper chats a bit with Bianca about work, and asks Cheren about his Gym Leader duties. This call also registers Juniper in your Xtransceiver; calling her will let her rate your Pokedex completion. After the call ends, Rival shows up to challenge Cheren's gym. Finally, Bianca gives you the C-Gear, a tool used to access WiFi and infrared connectivity with other players. There's nothing left to do here, so head back out to Route 20. When you are about to leave Floccesy Town, Bianca will catch up to you and upgrade your Pokedex with a feature that allows you to see what Pokemon can be found on each route.
Now that you have the Basic Badge, the Hiker who was blocking your way to the eastern part will be willing to let you pass - but only after you fight him and his single Riolu. Going down the stairs and you'll face a Preschooler with a Psyduck. A bit beyond them, and Cheren and Rival will walk up to you. Cheren will explain to the two of you about the dark grass ahead - in it, there is the possibility of encountering two wild Pokemon at the same time in a double battle. Cheren gives both of you some Pecha Berries, which can heal a Pokemon of poisoning, before leaving. Rival will go into the dark grass to look for Pokemon, you should follow him as well to grab the Great Ball there. Great Balls are upgraded PokeBalls that have a higher likelihood of capturing a Pokemon. The dark grass also features a new Pokemon, Venipede, which is a Bug/Poison type with surprisingly high speed, Battle the Preschooler in front of the stairs, who has a Lillipup, then head up the stairs to grab the Antidote, another item that heals poisoning. On the lower ledge is a Nursery Aide with a Dunsparce, and to her right is a Dire Hit, which is a special kind of X-item that raises critical hit ratio. The final trainers on the route are a pair of Twins who will challenge you to your first trainer double battle of the game; they have two Sunkern between them. Once you're done on Route 20, you can head through the gate where the attendant will give you some more Great Balls. Then exit to reach Virbank City.
Virbank City
As soon as you enter this dirty port city, you'll receive a call from your mother, who will tell you to visit a place called the Virbank Industrial Complex. Continue into the city, and you'll see the town's Gym Leader, Roxie, arguing with her father. Roxie's dad walks off through the northern gate, and Roxie storms off to the south. Once you've healed up and restocked items at the PokeCenter, it's time to explore the city. You'll be able to see an item ball in an alley behind the PokeCenter, but we can't get there yet. In the house to the right of the PokeCenter is a PokeToy, which allows you to escape from a wild Pokemon. Going down, if you hug the wall on the left, you can slip through a gap. Follow the path along the water, and at the end you'll be able to find a hidden Pearl, which can be sold for some money. Continue on and you'll see the docks on the right and the Virbank Gym on the left, but we're not heading there yet. The man right outside the Gym will give you a Pokeball though. The building on the far left of the same street as the gym is a nursery where an aide will give you a Burn Heal, which will heal any Pokemon of the burn condition (but you could figure that out anyway). Make sure to check the trash can next to it for an Antidote. Once you're done collecting items, head to the southern end of the city to take your mom's advice and visit the Virbank Industrial Complex
Virbank Industrial Complex
The Complex has a couple of items to grab before you start catching Pokemon. There is an X-Accuracy lying in the grass near the entrance, so be sure to pick that up. Then go down the stairs to talk to the Roughneck staring at the wall; he will give you a Great Ball in exchange for a Pokeball. After him, head up along the road next to the water and go under the bridge to reach another set of stairs. Follow the path along the wall and you'll run into a Silk Scarf, which is an item that slightly boosts the power of Normal type moves when it is equipped to a Pokemon. Double back now, and head over to the grass for some more capture opportunities. The Complex is home to the first version exclusive Pokemon of the game. Players of Black 2 will be able to find wild Magby, a Fire type, while players of White 2 can find Elekid, an Electric type. Both of these Pokemon are pretty similar - they are each considered to be "baby" Pokemon, meaning they can't breed, they each have good movepools and stats, and they evolve the same way. It should be noted that you cannot obtain Magmortar or Electivire, Magby and Elekid's final evolutions, without trading while they hold a certain item, which may be off-putting; however their second forms Magmar and Electabuzz are both more than capable Pokemon. Aside from Magby and Elekid, the Complex also offers Magnemite, an Electric/Steel type with the distinction of having the most resistances of any species. Now head to the inner part of the Industrial Complex
The inner part of the complex has a couple more Pokemon that can be added to your team. Joining the ranks are Growlithe, a Fire-type puppy with high attack stats, and Koffing, a Poison-type landmine with high defense stats, Magby, Elekid, and Magnemite are also slightly more common in the inner part than the outer, so come here to get some if you're having trouble finding them. Once you've caught everything you want, you can turn your attention to the trainers. Heading down the road, you'll first find a Youngster with a Lillipup, then head through the grassy patch, where a spot without grass hides a Great Ball. Continue through the dark grass to talk to a Scientist, who will run off. In the corner of this area is another grassless patch which contains a TinyMushroom, another item to sell for money. Go back to where the Youngster is and follow the road, where you will see the Scientist again. Talk to him, and he'll head into a small park area with two women. Talk to the Scientist a third time and he will give you an Ether, an item that restores the PP of a single move by 10. While you're down here, talk to the girl facing the water; she is a Lass who will fight you with a Woobat, a Psychic/Flying type with high speed. If you climb the stairs, you'll notice that you can walk across the red rails. These rails are thin, and you'll fall off them if you stand still or walk off, so make sure you know where you want to go before you step. Follow the rails to the lower right section, where you'll face a Worker with a Magby and a Koffing. You can also find a TM46 - Thief, a Dark type move that steals the opponents held item if the user is not holding one itself. Head back up along the rails and you'll see another Worker who has a Patrat and an Elekid. Go to the left now, where you'll see a Youngster with a Patrat. Finally, jump down to challenge a final Worker, who has a Riolu and a Lillipup. Once you've defeated all three of the Workers, you can go talk to the fat guy near the entrance to the Complex and he'll give you TM94 - Rock Smash, a weak Fighting type move that can lower the foe's defense. You've done everything here that you can now, so it's finally time to take on the Virbank Gym.
Virbank City Gym
Virbank City's Gym is located in a grungy alley near the docks, and if it weren't for the flashing Gym sign it would be very easy to miss. Go down the stairs and the Gym guide will talk to you and give you your free Fresh Water, then head through the doors to find Roxie and her band, The Koffing, practicing their music. In fact, Roxie cannot hear your challenge request because she is so into her music. Looks like you'll have to fight her two bandmates first. Keep in mind that like her band's namesake, Roxie's Gym is full of Poison types, so having some Antidotes is very handy. The band's drummer is a Roughneck who has a level 14 Grimer, which is a pure Poison-type pile of sludge with good bulk, and a level 14 Koffing. The Guitarist has a level 14 Venipede and another level 14 Koffing. After defeating both of them, they will stop playing their instruments, letting you finally get Roxie's attention for a battle.
In keeping with her band's theme, Roxie leads off with a level 16 Koffing. It uses Smog, a very weak Poison type move, to try to inflict the Poison status on your Pokemon; Assurance, a Dark type move that does double damage if the opponent has taken damage earlier in the turn, and Tackle. Her second pokemon, Whirlipede, is the evolved form of Venipede, and knows Poison Sting to inflict Poison as well; Pursuit, a Dark type move that does double damage on a Pokemon if it switches out, Protect, which makes all moves (except for the rare and weak Feint) miss during that turn, and Venoshock, a special-based Poison move that does double damage if the opponent is poisoned. Keep in mind that Whirlipede also has the Poison Point ability, which gives it the possibility of poisoning the foe if it uses a contact move.
If you picked up a Magnemite in the Industrial Complex, this will be a very easy battle, because Magnemite's Steel typing gives it immunity to Poison type moves, thus eliminating most of Roxie's offense. If you aren't using a Magnemite, you may have a bit more trouble. Both Koffing and Whirlipede have very good defensive stats for this point in the game, and the Poison type itself is a very good defensive type, with resistances to Bug, Fighting, Grass, and Poison moves. However, it isn't all bad news. While Poison is great defensively, it is arguably the worst type offensively, only hitting one type (Grass) super-effectively. Therefore, as long as you keep your Servines, Sunkerns and Sewaddles off the field, you won't be taking too much damage each turn. Aside from the possible boosted Venoshock, all of Roxie's moves are very weak anyway, so the main thing you need to watch out for is not getting Poisoned. Additionally, Whirlipede is part Bug-type, giving it additional weaknesses to Fire and Flying moves. This means that Pignite, Magby, Growlithe, and Pidove should all be fine in here. As long as you keep a few Antidotes at the ready, Roxie is easily beatable.
When you beat Roxie, she will give you $2160; the Toxic Badge, which makes any traded Pokemon up to level 30 obey you; and TM09 - Venoshock, a specially based Poison move that does double damage if the opponent is poisoned. As you leave the stage, an Actor who watched the battle you just had comes up and invites you to come to a place called PokeStar Studios. Roxie's father apparently works there, so she's going there as well.
