That night, Misty is invited to dinner, where Rudy askes her to stay with him, requesting an answer after the battle. In battle, Pikachu is beaten by Electabuzz but Bulbasaur beats Exeggutor. Misty finally decides to choose Ash over Rudy when she helps coach Ash in battle, allowing Squirtle to learn Hydro Pump and beat Starmie.

As Tracey studies under QuackenPokér, the group study the Magikarp swimming upstream and up waterfalls. Team Rocket use their Magikarp submarine to steal all the Magikarp, but are forced to let them go when the sub sinks. The Magikarp then evolve, swimming away as QuackenPokér pays Tracey a compliment for his research help.

As Ash and Pikachu prepare to start training for the Orange League Tournament, Ash and Tracey are Stun Spored by a Vileplume and Misty must find the Salveo Weed to save them. James and Meowth are in a similar situation with Jesse, and after a battle between Misty and James, and some failed traps by James and Meowth, Misty leaves behind some Salveo Weed for Jesse. After everyone is healed, Misty is joined by Poliwag as Jesse fails to battle the twerps by herself.
113Hello, Pummelo!
Who's that Pokemon? Dragonite
The group arrive at Pummelo Island, where Ash finally registers for the Orange League as Team Rocket fail to steal Champion Drake's Dragonite. To be inducted into the Orange League, Ash must defeat Drake in a 6-on-6 Pokémon battle. Ash opens with Pikachu and Drake with Ditto, who transforms but is narrowly defeated by Pikachu. Next, Ash's Squirtle easily takes out Onix. Drake's Gengar confuses Tauros as Lapras is forced to stand in as we end in a cliffhanger.
114Enter the Dragonite
Who's that Pokemon? Tentacruel
Ash continues his Championship match with Drake as Gengar's Night Shade and Lapras' Ice Beam take out both Pokémon. Drake sends in Venusaur and Ash uses Tauros, who takes a few hits but manages to win. Drake then uses Electabuzz while Ash chooses Bulbasaur. Thunderpunch takes out the Grass-type, but Charizard saves Ash with a Seismic Toss. Finally, Dragonite goes through Charizard, Squirtle, Tauros and Team Rocket before Pikachu narrowly wins the championship.

After the poachers are arrested, Ash tearily releases Lapras to be with its family.

Poncho, whose Diglett burrow under the Electrode leading to an open pasture, helps the heroes. Team Rocket are hired to exterminate the Electrode, but Poncho's Dugtrio stops them. Poncho's Digletts led all the Electrode to the pasture, and with the island reinhabited, Ash gets on the ferry to Pallet.

Who's that Pokemon? Omastar
Ash, Misty and Tracey return to Pallet Town, where they meet up with Deliah and Mimey, and discover Brock has mysteriously returned from Valencia, not wanting to talk about Professor Ivy ever again. The gang head to Oak's Lab, where Ash meets up with his Pokémon and Tracey shows his sketches to Oak. Team Rocket encamp the Lab in a giant tent and steal everything of value from the heroes until Gary and his Nidoqueen appear to save the day and challenge Ash to battle.
118The Rivalry Revival
Who's that Pokemon? Dewgong
Gary leaves for the Johto League after he defeats Ash and Pikachu in a one-on-one battle with his Eevee. With the Orange League behind him, Oak encourages Ash to also travel to Johto, giving him a new Pokédex and the GS Ball to give to Kurt. Tracey reveals he's staying in Pallet to be Oak's assistant, as Brock decides to rejoin Ash and Misty. Team Rocket attempt to steal Pikachu, but Tracey and Mimey help one last time. The next day, the original trio depart for Johto.
