Travelling toward Mahogany Town, the heroes plan to make a return to Ecruteak City. Misty meets up with Sakura to find that she has since evolved her Eevee into Espeon. Team Rocket con the other Kimono Sisters into dance classes where they steal the Eeveelutions, hoping for a complete set. Realizing they're short one Espeon, Jesse attempts to steal Sakura's. Using Espeon's Psychic abilities, Sakura is able to defeat the Rockets, save the Eevees, and prove her maturity.
229For Ho-Oh the Bells Toll!
The group reach Ecruteak City on their way to Mahogany to discover the City is in a panic due to the Tin Tower's bells ringing, signaling the return of Ho-oh. As the group meets up with Morty and Eusine, Team Rocket steal the Crystal Bells of the Tower, distressing the local Pokémon and interrupting Ash and Eusine's battle. Morty's Gengar and the presence of Suicune calm the berzerk Pokémon as Eusine finishes off Team Rocket, and fails to capture the fleeing Suicune.
230Extreme Pokémon!
Who's that Pokemon? Mr. Mime
Resuming toward Mahogany Town, the team meets up with Gary and a number of trainers practicing for the Extreme Pokémon races. Ash thinks it's a cruel way to treat Pokémon, but quickly changes his tune and trains with Bayleef at a local couple's Pokémon Daycare. Ash and Gary work together as Team Rocket steal Gary's Arcanine, but somehow the rivals still end up leading at the end of the race. Ash narrowly beats Gary, winning his very own Pokémon Egg.
231An EGG-Sighting Adventure!
Who's that Pokemon? Blissey
Rushing to get out of a storm, the trio head to a local Pokémon Center for the night. While they sleep, Team Rocket attempt to steal Ash's Pokémon Egg, but Togepi Teleports it outside where a wild Kangaskhan snatches it up. Recruiting Officer Jenny and Nurse Joy, the gang go through humorous theory after theory trying to figure out who took the Egg. In the end, the group find the Kangaskhan, who sends the Rockets flying, and retrieve Ash's Egg.
232Hatching a Plan
Who's that Pokemon? Seadra
Ash's Pokémon Egg hatches into a Baby Phanpy, who doesn't seem to obey its new trainer. When Team Rocket try to steal Phanpy and cause it be shocked by Pikachu, Phanpy runs off into the woods and meets the Rockets after they blast off. Meowth tricks Phanpy into helping the Rockets capture Pikachu, but Phanpy realizes Ash cared for it after the Rockets mistreat it. Ash further proves his care by rescuing Phanpy when it falls into a raging river near a waterfall.
233Dues and Don'ts
Who's that Pokemon? Smeargle
Team Rocket quarrel over why they keep losing and feel they should get new Pokémon. They find a caged Delibird and beat it, discovering it was a ploy to find new Rocket members. Jesse and James are distraught to find out their Rocket membership has expired, and we meet unimportant Wendy. Jesse and James must beat Ash to rejoin the Team, but fail. The talent scout recommends them anyway, sending her Delibird to collect bills from Jesse and James.
234Just Waiting on a Friend
Who's that Pokemon? Sudowoodo
The group meets Lococo, a beautiful Ninetales trainer, and she brings them to her mansion. After some suspicious behavior, Lococo proposes to Brock and throws out Ash and Misty, who discover Ninetales' old master looks exactly like Brock. Ninetales apologizes to the group and reveals that it used its abilities to projection Lococo and the mansion because its master is gone. In a battle with Team Rocket, Ninetales helps Ash and it is set free when its Pokéball is broken.
235A Tyrogue Full of Trouble
Who's that Pokemon? Spinarak
Continuing on, a wild Tyrogue encounters the kids and steals their food. Kiyo, a Karate Trainer, apologizes and explains that Tyrogue was abandoned by its trainer and enjoys causing trouble for humans. Kiyo hopes to melt Tyrogue's heart and enter with him in the P-1 Tournament. Kiyo gets his chance when he saves Tyrogue from a Team Rocket abduction. Kiyo then proves himself by battling one on one with Tyrogue, who agrees to join the human.
236Xatu the Future
Who's that Pokemon? Ledian
The heroes fall into a pitfall, ending up in underground facility and meeting Calista and her Xatu, who provide weather predictions. The Xatu, whose predictions are diminishing with age, prophize that a storm will flood the institution the next day. Delibird uses Present to revitalizs the Xatu who realize the storm is coming today and teleport everyone to safety. Calista becomes a weather girl, realizing Xatu's powers should be used for guidance over worrying about the future.
237Talkin' 'Bout an Evolution
Who's that Pokemon? Marowak
Nearing Mahogany, everybody's Pokémon are feeling sick, including a red Gyarados in Lake Rage. Team Rocket attempt to abduct the kids, but Lance saves them and advises them to leave. Jesse and James end up on a mission to lure out the red Gyarados while Lance goes undercover to find out Team Rocket are using evolution rays to force evolution. Team Ash return to the Lake but are abducted and thrown in confinement by Tyson and Professor Sebastian.
238Rage of Innocence
Who's that Pokemon? Dunsparce
The heroes manage to break out of Team Rocket's confinement after Jesse and James mess up and set them free. They meet up with Lance, who has his Dragonite destroy the Rocket's Base. Team Rocket attempt to steal the Red Gyarados by plane but Ash prevents them as Lance battles Tyson. After Jenny arrests Team Rocket, Pryce saves Mahogany Town from the rampaging Red Gyarados. Lance weakens the Gyarados with Dragonite and captures it, promising to help it.
239As Cold as Pryce
Who's that Pokemon? Magneton
The heroes arrive in Mahogany and meet Shiela, who takes Ash to meet Pryce. After Pryce wins a practice battle, the two meet Team Rocket and fall down a cliff. Pryce explains he used to be like Ash, friends with his Pokémon, until his Piloswine abandoned him. The two then find Piloswine frozen solid in the cavern, collecting herbs for a burn Pryce suffered as a young man, and thaw it out. Pryce is grateful to Ash for his help, and allows him a Gym Leader Battle the next day.
240Nice Pryce, Baby!
Who's that Pokemon? Weedle
Ash, starting with Cyndaquil, takes on Pryce and Dewgong with Shiela serving as the judge. Dewgong uses the Gym's pool to its advantage until Ash commands Cyndaquil to head in after it and surprise it with Swift. Cyndaquil finishes Dewgong with Flamethrower, but Piloswine easily defeats Cyndaquil with Blizzard and Take Down. Pikachu is sent in, and after a long and exhausting battle for both Pokémon, Pryce throws in the towel due to Ash's unique battle style.
241Whichever Way the Wind Blows
Who's that Pokemon? Arcanine
The group meet Steven, who is studying how the wind patterns carry traces of Leaf and Sun Stone to evolve Gloom into either Vileplume or Bellossom. Whenever the wind changes, the evolution that gains more members beats up the other side, leading to all out war that saddens the Oddish and some Vileplume and Bellossom that evolved into the opposite Pokémon they wanted. After fighting off Team Rocket, the two sides learn to make peace and the kids continue on their way
242Some Like it Hot
Who's that Pokemon? Mantine
The kids continue through a volcanic mountain, where a giant Magcargo blocks their path. After failing to clear out the Pokémon, Misty is criticized for using Water Pokémon by Egan, a Fire Pokémon trainer. After driving his Flareon too hard, the two trainers explain why they like the Pokémon they do over lunch. By taking Misty's advice, Egan is able to capture the Magcargo by changing his battle style, and the two opposing trainers work together to defeat Team Rocket.
243Hocus Pokémon
Who's that Pokemon? Dewgong
The trio meet Lily, a Pokémon Magician, who is trying to make a potion enabling humans to read a Pokémon's mind. Ash helps Lily collect the remaining ingredients: a Parasect's Stun Spore and dirt from Meowth's paw. Team Rocket steal Lily's bag and an Aipom, whose tears are the last ingredient, but Ash sends the Rockets flying, making Aipom cry from laughter. Lily, with the magic book smudged, messes up the spell and turns Ash temporarily into a Pikachu instead.
244As Clear as Crystal
Who's that Pokemon? Kingdra
A Team Rocket attack leaves Pikachu feeling weak, until the heroes meet Crystal, who brings Pikachu to a lake that restores health to Electric Pokémon via a crystal found underwater. Team Rocket attack the lake and succeed in stealing the crystal even though the weakened Zapdos overloads their machines and they blast off. The heroes head off and successfully retrieve the crystal from the Rockets. Crystal in place, all the Electric Pokémon work together to revive Zapdos.
245Same Old Song and Dance
Who's that Pokemon? Yanma
With Jigglypuff returning, the heroes meet Brittany and her Igglybuff, stars of their own singing show. As Brittany performs her concert, Team Rocket intervene with their own song and steal Brittany's Igglybuffs. Brock salsa dances as the heroes and Brittany untie Jigglypuff and shatter Jesse's dreams of stardom when they free the Igglybuff. The Igglybuff then beat Team Rocket's Pokémon, and Brittany returns to finish her show, only for Jigglypuff to put the house to sleep.
246Enlighten Up!
Who's that Pokemon? Noctowl
The heroes end up at Lake SlowPoké, near a shrine where people strive for Enlightenment. Madeline lets Team Ash and Rocket join the shrine to train via meditating with a clear mind, cleaning the floors, and fishing without wanting to keep their captures. A SlowPoké achieves Enlightenment, evolving into Slowbro in time to keep Team Rocket from stealing the shrine's Golden SlowPoké statue. With more knowledge about themselves, the heroes continue their journey.
247Will the Real Oak Please Stand Up?
Who's that Pokemon? Corsola
The heroes travel to nearby Maroon Town to hear Professor Oak and DJ Mary's Pokémon Q&A. Team Rocket, looking for some fast food, disguise themselves as Oak and Mary, even performing the Q&A themselves. The real Oak challenges James to a Pokéknowledge contest, hosted by DJ Mary and Jesse, and judged by Nurse Joy. The contest ends up a tie until Professor Oak proves himself through his Pokémon Poetry, and blasts off the Rockets with his Pidgey.
248Wish Upon a Star Shape
Who's that Pokemon? Voltorb
The heroes notice a shooting star, which turns out to be a space ship. A tiny Cleffa falls out of the ship, but is saved by falling on top of Phanpy. Ash realizes the Cleffa came from the ship of Clefairy that stole their stuff way back in Indigo. The kids then try to bring Cleffa back to its ship, protecting it both from Team Rocket and Ken and Mary of the high-tech PMC. The Clefairy use the villian's machines to repair their ship, Cleffa evolves, and Phanpy sadly has to say goodbye.
249Outrageous Fortunes
Who's that Pokemon? Pinsir
The heroes battle Delaney, a Poliwrath trainer, whose Poliwrath beats Misty and Poliwhirl, but draws with Ash and Bayleef. At the PokéCenter, Ash trips and spills his stuff, allowing Poliwhirl to take his King's Rock. Jesse disguises herself as a fortune teller and steals Delaney's Poliwrath, using a machine to make it follow Team Rocket's commands. Misty sends out Poliwhirl, who evolves into Politoed, frees Poliwrath, and the two evolutions slap Team Rocket into oblivion.
250One Trick Phony!
Who's that Pokemon? Tauros
Ash heads to Battle Park to train for his match against Clair. Although Battle Park is closed for the day, Team Rocket, working as employees, let Ash in to battle against them using the Park's Pokémon. James' skill with Victreebel allows him to beat Cyndaquil with Venusaur, but Jesse's rashness keeps her from beating Totodile and Pikachu with Charizard and Blastoise. Team Rocket steal the Park's Pokémon, but they turn on the Rockets once outside the Park and save the day.
251I Politoed Ya So!
Who's that Pokemon? Tododile
The gang takes a rest but Misty's Politoed wanders off, getting switched with Tammi's Politoed, Bean. The group find Politoed, and Misty agrees to let Tammi use it in her dancing competition. The kids then feel concerned over Tammi's strictness toward Bean and the other Pokémon, and after Tammi snaps at her dancers, she realizes the error of her ways. Team Rocket use their Mecha Politoed to capture the trainer and Pokémon, but Bean saves the day, making up with Tammi.
252The Ice Cave!
This episode is banned because Jynx has been found to be a racial stereotype of Aftican Americans; now, new episodes that feature Jynx have simply edited out her appearances. Jynx was in too much of this episode for it to be salvagable, so it was banned. Basically, the story takes places in the Ice Cave, Team Rocket get Brock sick and try to steal the Center's Pokémon and there was a reference to the Joy in The Joy of Pokémon, but nothing happened to affect the storyline.
253Beauty is Skin Deep
Who's that Pokemon? Goldeen
The group finds a Dratini who belongs to Clair, Blackthorn Gym Leader. Before Clair can battle Ash in a Gym Match, she must first protect the Dratini, who is travelling to shed its skin, and perform a ritual by rinsing the ancient Dragonfang. Team Rocket steal Dratini, but the heroes follow them and battle ensues. After Wobbuffet Counters Thunderbolt, Clair takes the attack to protect Dratini, who evolves, blasts off Team Rocket, and takes the Leader to perform her ritual.
254Fangs for Nothin'
Who's that Pokemon? Octillery
After helping Clair, Ash earns his battle for the final Johto badge. Clair's Dragon-type Kingdra proves too much for Pikachu's electricity and Agility makes Noctowl's Psychic attacks useless. Meanwhile, Team Rocket steal the Dragon Fang for some cash. Escaping a boat, they head into the Dragon's Den with the heroes in pursuit on their Pokémon. In the "Holy Land," the Rockets convince a Dragonite to help them escape as a mysterious figure in the horizon approaches Ash.
255Great Bowls of Fire!
Who's that Pokemon? Chinchou
Liza brings Charizard from the Charicific Valley to help chase after Team Rocket, who is brought to the Dragon Shrine by Dragonite. When Team Rocket try to steal the bowl holding the eternal flame, Dragonite goes berzerk, destroying the Holy Land. When Ash and Clair arrive, Dragonite is suffering from attack Rage and Ash and Clair's Pokémon are forced to team up to end Dragonite's wrath. Harmlessly stopping Dragonite, Ash earns a Gym Battle for the next day.
256Better Eight Than Never
Who's that Pokemon? Muk
Ash finally resumes his fight for the final Johto badge. Clair opens the rematch with her Kingdra again, but Ash chooses Snorlax. Snorlax is able to wear down Kingdra and finishes it off with Ice Punch. Clair sends in Gyarados who takes down Snorlax with Dragonbreath, but is defeated by Pikachu with Agility and Thunderbolt. Clair's Dragonair takes out Pikachu with Hyper Beam, but after a very long battle of dodging and various attacks, Charizard wins Ash his final badge.
257Why? Why Not!
Who's that Pokemon? Steelix
With all eight badges, Clair advises Ash to head for New Bark to register for the Silver Conference. Team Rocket disguise themselves as news reporters and steal Ash's badges so Jesse can enter the Conference herself. Wobbuffet then loses the badges to a Wynaut, and the two sides races to find the badges. Bayleef and Noctowl help the Wynaut open the badge case to get some fruit inside, so Wynaut returns the favor by helping Ash battle against Team Rocket and retrieve the badges.
258Just Add Water
Who's that Pokemon? Rhydon
The heroes find Coastline Gym, a private underwater Gym led by Dorian, who Misty challenges to a match. Ash has a quick battle first, but Totodile is beaten by Lanturn's Take Down. Qwilfish's Take Down then beats Misty's Goldeen, but Corsola beats Mantine with Spike Cannon. Before they can finish, Team Rocket abduct Misty and Dorian. Ash and Brock follow, where Psyduck's Psychic saves the day. Before leaving, Misty and Dorian call a draw, forming a new friendship.
259Lapras of Luxury
Who's that Pokemon? Qwilfish
The heroes head to the Marine Pokémon Lab to pick up a Pokémon Egg for Professor Elm. At the Lab, they meet Naomi, who is researching the songs of wild Lapras. Ash reunites with his Lapras from Orange, but Team Rocket then steal the Lapras for themselves. Team Ash and Naomi follow them to a nearby island by tracing the call of the captured Lapras, and Ash once again defeats the Rockets. Retrieving the Egg, Ash says goodbye to his friend, who becomes leader of the Lapras.
260Hatch Me if You Can
Who's that Pokemon? Swinub
Returning to New Bark, Ash's Pokémon Egg hatches into a Larvitar with a low body temperature. The heroes rush Larvitar to a nearby Pokémon Center and after beating Team Rocket again, work to keep the newborn warm all night. Larvitar gives Ash a nightmare of its experience inside its egg, and the next day, Ash tries desperately to show Larvitar that there's good in the world. Larvitar learns to trust Ash (and only Ash) after its new friend defends it against Team Rocket.
261Entei at Your Own Risk
Who's that Pokemon? Tyrogue
The group relax at some hot springs and meet Nelson, who has been researching the area, hoping to capture Entei. Team Rocket trick Ash into their truck with smoothies, but Ash escapes thanks to his Pokémon. Ash's Phanpy battles Nelson's Misdreavus, who demonstrates Mean Look. Team Rocket intervene, sucking up the Pokémon with a twister. Brock's Pineco evolves, but only Entei can stop the Rockets. Nelson then challenges Entei, but it escapes due to Roar.
262A Crowning Achievement
Who's that Pokemon? Kadabra
The heroes meet Alice and her father, Prof. Telesu, who are worried that a group of SlowPoké are in danger with their river drying up. According to an ancient tale, a chosen SlowPoké will evolve into Slowking and lead its kind to Paradise, but all SlowPoké that have gone for the King's Rock have failed. Alice's SlowPoké, Albert, reaches the Rock with help from Larvitar, and then helps defeat Team Rocket. Sadly saying goodbye to Alice, Albert leads its kind to Paradise.
263Here's Lookin' at You, Elekid
Who's that Pokemon? Hypno
Team Rocket net Larvitar and a wild Elekid, but they escape and Elekid helps Larvitar open its heart by befriending it. The Rockets resteal the Pokémon but Casey's new Meganium blasts them off. James trades Victreebel to the Magikarp Salesman for a Sweet Scenting Weepinbell, luring Team Ash to Team Rocket. Weepinbell evolves but gets kicked off the team for attacking Jesse. James' two Victreebels happily run off together as Casey catches Elekid and departs from Team Ash.
264You're a Star, Larvitar!
Who's that Pokemon? Entei
Reaching Mt. Silver's base, Ash meets Satchel and the two battle. Putting up a good fight, Cyndaquil loses to Magby's Double Team/Dynamicpunch combo, causing Ash to train his Pokémon harder. Team Rocket use a giant vacuum to suck up Ash and some Pokémon but Larvitar follows them, manages to untie Ash and prevents Team Rocket from escaping. With the Pokémon freed, Satchel's Magby evolves to defeat Team Rocket, and Ash realizes the strengths of his Pokémon.
265Address Unown!
Who's that Pokemon? Moltres
Team Ash comes across a sick Unown separated from its kind and help restore its health. Being attacked by Team Rocket, Unown and Larvitar's minds merge and Unown sends the heroes into another dimension where they are able to look into Larvitar's mind. The trainers discover the bad memories of the past that bind Larvitar, and work desperately to free Larvitar and open its heart. By the heroes succeeding, Larvitar is no longer scared of humans, and Unown returns home safely.
266Mother of All Battles
Who's that Pokemon? Shuckle
The trio reach Mt. Silver's Reserve and reunite Larvitar with his mother, Tyranitar. However, the Pokémon Poaching Bros. (who stole Larvitar's egg) steal Tyranitar and escape. Ranger Mason arrives and her Croconaw helps Pikachu defeat Team Rocket, who joined the Poachers. The Brothers return to take Pikachu and Croconaw, but Larvitar's cry enrages Tyranitar to defeat the Bros., who are arrested. Saying goodbye to Larvitar, Ash continues to the Johto League.
267Pop Goes the Sneasel
Who's that Pokemon? Elekid
The threesome arrive at Ho-oh's Shrine, where they are asked to retrieve the Sacred Flame guarded atop by Machop, Machoke and Sneasel. Harrison, a trainer from the Hoenn region, comes along to help out and capture Sneasel for himself. Abandoned by Team Rocket, Meowth thwarts their plan to steal Sneasel, which enables Harrison and his Blaziken to capture it. Machop and Machoke become guardians of the shrine and the Conference begins with the running of the flame.
268A Claim to Flame!
Who's that Pokemon? Scizor
Arriving at the Silver Conference, Ash participates in his 3-Battle screening to advance into the semi-finals. Cyndaquil beats Exeggutor, Phanpy beats Machoke and although Salvador's Furret gives Pikachu some trouble, it wins with Thunderbolt. That night, Ash and Gary meet up, put aside their difference, and form a friendship. The next day, Gary saves Ash from Team Rocket, and with the torch carrier injured, Ash carries the torch to begin the Conference.
269Love, Pokémon Style
Who's that Pokemon? Skiploom
Ash meets his Macey, his first semifinal opponent, rescuing her Vulpix from Team Rocket. When Kingler becomes injured, Officer Jenny brings Squirtle to help out. In battle, Phanpy beats Slugma with Take Down, but is beaten by Quilava's Flame Wheel. Electabuzz defeats Totodile with Thunderpunch, but Squirtle saves the day, defeating Electabuzz with Skull Bush and Quilava with Hydro Pump. Post-battle, Slugma evolves, serving as a symbol of Ash and Macey's "love."
270Tie One On!
Who's that Pokemon? Azumarill
Macey defeats Jackson, making for a possible a three-way tie. Stopping a fight between Bulbasaur and Meganium, Ash and Jackson begin their battle. Azumarill falls to Pikachu's Thunder, but Jackson's shiny Magneton beats Pikachu and Cyndaquil with Thunder Wave and Tri-Attack. Bulbasaur defeats Magneton with Leech Seed and Razor Leaf, but after a long battle, it draws with Meganium. With four points, Ash advances, but shocked to discover his next opponent is Gary.
271The Ties That Bind
Who's that Pokemon? Umbreon
Ash reflects on his rivalry with Gary, recalling their first "draw," when they fished up the same Pokéball just before their journies began. Trying to form a team against unpredictable Gary, Ash is thrilled when Charizard returns to help out, and Oak and Deliah arrive to spectate. Starting their battle on the Rock Field, Nidoqueen beats Tauros with a single Hyper Beam, but Magmar is taken down with a Megahorn from Heracross, who takes on Gary's Blastoise in a cliffhanger.
272Can't Beat the Heat!
Who's that Pokemon? Bayleef
Resuming the battle, Blastoise takes down Heracross with Hydro Pump and Bayleef with a Bite and a toss into the wall. Ash uses Snorlax, beating Arcanine with Hyper Beam and Nidoqueen via Ice Punch. Gary's Scizor then uses Metal Claw and Swift to defeat Snorlax and Muk. Odds against it, Charizard takes down both Scizor and Golem with Flamethrower and Dragon Rage. Charizard then Seismic Tosses Blastoise down after a tough match, ending Ash and Gary's long rivalry.

Who's that Pokemon? Ariados
In his next battle, Ash meets Harrison on the Grass Field. Pikachu defeats Kecleon with Thunderbolt but loses to Sneasel's Metal Claw. Totodile beats Sneasel with Bite/Tail Whip but loses to Hypno's Psychic. Hypno falls to Snorlax's Hyper Beam, but so does Noctowl to Steelix's Iron Tail. Snorlax drops Steelix with Hyper Beam but loses to Houndoom's Counter. Beating Houndoom with Body Slam, Bayleef loses to a Fire Punch from Blaziken, who faces Charizard in a cliffhanger.

An explosion from Flamethrower and Dragon Rage proves too much for Charizard, placing Ash in 8th. Harrison places 4th, losing to the winner of the Conference, Jon Dickson from Sento-Cherry Town. Team Rocket use their Building-Mecha to scare off bill collectors and try to steal Pikachu, but everyone teams up to stop them. Gary then leaves for Pallet to become a Pokémon Researcher, Harrison goes to start his journey in Kanto, and Ash, Misty and Brock head to Viridian.

Misty receives her fixed bike just as she's needed back in Cerulean to tend to the Gym! Participating in their final battle, they defeat the Invincible Pokémon Bros. With Brock needed in Pewter, the gang sadly split up. Ash recevies some silverware and a kerchief from his allies, which help him escape from a Rocket pitfall. Inspired by Ho-oh and Gary's departure for the region, Ash chooses to follow to Hoenn with only Pikachu; he receives a new Pokédex, clothes, and a ship ticket.

Who's that Pokemon? Forretress
On the ship to Hoenn, Ash prepares himself for the future and yet another adventure, but Team Rocket steal Pikachu again. Suffering from a punctured tank in battle, the ship is forced to make an emergency docking. Separated from Jesse and James, Meowth and Pikachu protect Rattata, Pidgey and Oddish from some Haunter. The Rattata and Haunter make peace to destroy the Rockets' electromagnet, which leaves Pikachu seriously ill as Ash finds himself in the Hoenn region.
