#Episode Summary - Indigo League
1Pokémon, I Choose You!
We are introduced to Ash Ketchum of Pallet Town, who by turning the age of 10, can now become a Pokémon trainer. Oversleeping on the first day of his journey, Ash misses his chance to get a regular starting Pokémon, so Professor Oak gives Ash an unfriendly Pikachu. Pikachu, unhappy with its new trainer, begins to trust Ash only after he attempts to save Pikachu from a flock of angry Spearow, and the new team see Ho-oh fly over the horizon as the journey begins.
2Pokémon Emergency!
Arriving in nearby Virdian City, Ash must get Pikachu to the Pokémon Center for medical attention after fighting the Spearow in the storm. Ash meets Officer Jenny, who gets him to the Pokémon Center in fast time, and Nurse Joy, who operates on and heals Pikachu. With Pokémon trainer Misty tagging along because of a broken bike, the team must fight off two Pokémon criminals - Jesse and James of Team Rocket, who are trying to steal the center's Pokémon.
3Ash Catches a Pokémon
Once in the Virdian Forest, Ash catches a Caterpie and is ecstatic over his first Pokémon capture. Misty, terrified of bugs, does not share in his happiness. Settling down for the night, Pikachu consoles Caterpie. The next morning, a wild Pidgeotto is captured by Ash with Pikachu's help after attacking Caterpie. Team Rocket then emerges, blinding Pikachu and defeating Pidgeotto in battle, causing Caterpie to fight. It amazingly wins with String Shot, and then evolves into Metapod.
4Challenge of the Samurai
Still in the Virdian Forest, Ash starts the day by attempting to capture a wild Weedle. A Samurai looking to challenge Ash distracts him from Weedle, and the two battle in a very ridiculous Metapod v. Metapod Hardening battle. The group is ambushed by a Beedrill squad and Ash must rescue Metapod the next morning. When Ash realizes he can't blame others for his mistakes, Metapod evolves into Butterfree and uses Sleep Powder to put the Beedrills out.
5Showdown in Pewter City
When Ash and Misty finally arrive at Pewter City, Ash discovers the Pokémon League and wants to begin his quest for the eight League badges. Ash challenges the local Gym Leader, Brock, but his Onix defeats Pikachu easily. With the help of Brock's father Flint, Ash powers up Pikachu for a rematch, nearly winning because of a sprinkler system accidently going off. Brock gives Ash the Boulderbadge because of Ash's kindness and joins the group.
6Clefairy and the Moon Stone
The newly formed threesome continue on to Mt. Moon where they discover a pack of Zubat attacking Seymour, a scientist. Pikachu saves Seymoure from the Zubat while Brock catches one for himself, and Seymour explains the Pokémon of Mt. Moon are confused because of the lighting system of Team Rocket, who are looking for the Moon Stone. They are stopped by Ash and a bunch of Clefairy, some of which evolve when the Moon Stone explodes.
7The Water Flowers of Cerulean City
When Ash wants to continue Cerulean City, Misty mysteriously disappears. Ash and Brock go to Cerulean anyway, discovering a local robbery has been occurred. As Brock leaves to do "stuff," Ash goes to challenge the Cerulean Gym Leaders, but ends up battling Misty, their sister. Team Rocket interupts, trying to suck up the water Pokémon with a giant vacuum. Pikachu stops the Rockets, and Misty's sisters give Ash a badge for saving the Gym.
8The Path to the Pokémon League
With two badges and 10 victories under his belt, egotistical Ash discovers A.J., a strict, undefeated Pokémon trainer with his own Pokémon Gym. A.J. defeats Ash easily, who learns that Pokémon can still be raised effectively even if the trainer's techniques are different. When Team Rocket accidently kidnap A.J.'s Sandshrew, A.J. celebrates his 100th victory against the Rockets, and Ash and A.J. part ways, vowing to meet in the Pokémon league.
9The School of Hard Knocks
The kids stumble upon a young trainer named Joe being picked on by older boys; it turns out Joe and his peers are students of Pokémon Technical School. The harsh treatment of Joe makes the group want to talk to Giselle, the top trainer of the class, to set the school straight. The kids learn a lesson when they discover that Pokémon battling is flexible and there's more to it than type advantages when Ash's Pikachu defeats Giselle's Cubone in battle.
10Bulbasaur and the Hidden Village
Continuing on to Vermillion, the group comes across a wild Oddish near water. When Ash and Misty try to capture the Pokémon, they are stopped by a Bulbasaur. The Bulbasaur is a helper of Melanie, who runs a hidden rest house for injured Pokémon. When Team Rocket tries to steal the house's Pokémon, Ash and Bulbasaur team up to stop them. Bulbasaur then allows Ash a battle and chance to capture it, and Ash catches his next Pokémon.
11Charmander - The Stray Pokémon
Still trying to find their way to Vermillion City, the kids run across an abandoned Charmander waiting on a rock near Route 24. They decide to leave it alone and continue to the PokéCenter, where they find it's trainer, Damien, bragging about abandoning it. The kids rush into a storm to rescue Charmander, who runs off again after being healed. Team Rocket captures Pikachu but are stopped by Charmander, who chooses to join Ash.
12Here Comes the Squirtle Squad
Once again in search of Vermillion City, the group happens across a pack of mischievous Squirtles appropriately called the Squirtle Squad. The Squirtle Squad, being influenced by Meowth, holds the kids prisoner until Ash has to race a nearby town to get some medicine for Pikachu. When Ash returns, a forest fire starts, and the trainers works together with the Squirtle Squad, who's leader is saved by, and then joins up with Ash, filling out his party.
13Mystery at the Lighthouse
As Ash celebrates collecting his sixth Pokémon, his joy is shot down by Misty, who notes all his Pokémon followed him, causing Ash to run and capture a Krabby on his own. As Ash is sad from Krabby's transfer to Oak, the group come across the Lighthouse owned by Bill, who teaches them a bit about the many different Pokémon in the world. Unfortunately, Bill's Lighthouse is destroyed when a Dragonite that Bill was trying to communicate with is attacked by Team Rocket.
14Electric Shock Showdown
As the group finally arrives in Vermillion City, Ash is quick to try to earn his first real Gym Badge. He meets Lt. Surge, user of a Raichu, who Pokés fun at Ash for using an unevolved Pikachu. Surge's Raichu woops Pikachu, facing Ash with the choice of evolving Pikachu. Instead, Ash chooses to try to beat Surge's Raichu with agility instead of power, and Ash prevails over Surge in a very close rematch to win a Thunderbadge.
15Battle Aboard the St. Anne
The kids happen upon some free tickets for the luxurious St. Anne from a couple of "cool," schoolgirls. These girls are really Team Rocket in disguise, and entire cruise is set up to be a Rocket takeover. As James buys a useless Magikarp, Ash realizes Butterfree, who he traded to a trainer, was too important to him, and rushes to get it back. However, things get worse as the kids, Jesse and James are trapped aboard the sinking St. Anne!
16Pokémon Shipwreck
Team Twerp and Team Rocket find themselves in a dangerous situation when they're trapped aboard the sunken St. Anne cruise ship. They temporarily form a truce and work together to find their way to the ship's hull and escape into the sea. Everyone safely makes it to the surface, but they are stranded in the middle of nowhere. When James grows annoyed of useless Magikarp, he kicks it into the sea, causing it to evolve into Gyarados and blow the group away.
17Island of the Giant Pokémon
After being blown away into the sea by Gyarados' Dragon Rage, Team Twerp and Team Rocket wash up safely on a seemingly deserted island. However, the trainers' Pokémon are separated and must fend for themselves while the trainers look for them. Both the humans the Pokémon encounter and are attacked by giant Pokémon, and after everybody reunites with each other, the group discovers they had landed on Pokémon Island, an amusement park.
18Beauty and the Beach
This episode was banned everywhere but in Japan because James was given inflatable boobs to try to win a swimsuit contest. The episode was eventually shown in America during the Orange Islands season with the objectionable subject snipped out, plus a couple of other minor changes. The trainers relax in Porta Vista for a swimsuit contest, and when Ash saves the resort from a Gyarados, the people of Porta Vista give him a trophy in his honor.
19Tentacool and Tentacruel
Arriving in the port city and resort town of Porta Vista, the heroes meet Nastina. Nastina wants to rid the resort of Tentacool so she can build an ocean hotel and make loads of money. Misty convinces Tentacruel to stop its attack with some help from her new Pokémon, Horsea.
20The Ghost of Maiden's Peak
As the kids leave Porta Vista, Brock is depressed over the end of summer and the fact that another year has passed without him finding love. Trying to enjoy a festival, the Ghost of a Maiden from a local folk tale hypnotises James and Brock into loving her, but it turns out that the Maiden is really a Gastly trying to keep old legends alive. The humans fail to defeat Gastly in battle, but it leaves anyway, hating the sunlight, and vows to return next year.
